This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Augustine's work, The City of God, and specifically on his discussion in book 19 focused on the present life's prospects for human happiness and enjoying the supreme good or final end for human beings. As rational beings,, our nature and our desires cannot be entirely fulfilled by the things and goods of this life. Augustine examines this matter in terms of the vulnerability of the body and the soul, the struggle of the virtues with the vices, and the strife and conflict involved in social existence.

@@GregoryBSadler Yes I have a presentation on the City of God that is worth a lot of my grade. I have never read Augustine before so this really helps me understand his worldview

Prof. Sadler, I don't know where you sir find yourself on the religious 'spectrum', so with this new series of the city of God, I was wondering if you could tell us what's your standpoint on religion? Are you religious? Or is there a video in which you explain your position? Thanks a lot for this series, by the way!

As far as I know, he's a Theist, and I also think he's a Catholic, but he doesn't like to mention it because he would not want to be misinterpreted as having a bias, but wants to appear as objective as possible, inasmuch as this is a Philosophy channel!

Do you have any article or books that discusses the stuff you said? So that it can be cited as secondary text in essays.

Yep. The book the video is about. It's in the title, and in the intro slide.
