- My dear friend Otha Turner and his family, The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, performs at Shangri-La Records, in Memphis, TN. Back in the good old days... Two things I remember about this day: my father (seen in the background wearing overhauls in tribute to OT) making fun of my self-inflicted haircut "looks like you escaped from the asylum" and Ben Nichols telling me he was thinking of starting a band with his friends, the beginning of Lucero.
My dear friend and neighbor for over 25 yrs may his soul 4EVER RIP 😢 🖤🕊️🙌🏿💪🏿🤝🏿
Fr? that’s awesome that you knew him, rip tho
Every since I was a teenager 🙌🏿💪🏿👏🏿
A legend And he is a Original Member of that North Mississippi Hill Country Music mob Mr Otha Turner👏👏👏👏
This is my heart. Otha, I wish I had known you in person.R.I.P. Love, Danger.
Phenomenal. I'm overseas and this IS AMERICA!! God Bless!!
I visited Mr. Othar at his home in Gravel Springs once. It was like going back into another century! He showed me how to make a fife. His whole family is amazing! So is Luther’s. 💙💙💙
This never gets old.
I drove OT and Bernice to one of the Shangri-la gigs, and I remember him yelling at me for getting distracted on the Union ramp and almost rear-ending someone when I got off 55. Ahh, the good ol' days... So lucky to have him in my life!
Words can't even describe it...
Thanks for posting this Luther.
What a MASTER PIECE !
Love it!!!! This is the real deal, y'all.
Love Otha. Thanks Luther this stuff is magic. Hope to catch you again soon in New Orleans.

The Real Deal Mississippi Fife & Drum Master!
Big thank you from Seattle, WA for posting this! Beautiful music!!
The Legendary Clarksdale native Otha Turner
Blues Driver nope not Clarksdale. I believe Otha was from Como, MS.
He was born in Canton, Mississippi.
Didn't they live around Gravel Springs?
I started making bamboo flutes when I was 14, in the 1960s. I thought I was a genius. Then one of my cousins told me Mr Turner taught us to make our own cane flutes, so we could “blow that cane” and I just forgot. My grandfather and Uncke were friends with him.
Thank you for posting.
So geht das! Wunderbar! Was ne Version, Halleluja! Mit herzlichen Grüßen aus Dresden/Germany! We love it!
Amazing footage Luther many thanx for sharing this..hope you guys all had a great gig down at the Jazzfest, wished I could have made it down for that one...Cheers
Hi there Luther. I just got in from seeing some of your friends up here in Brooklyn. Nigel hall and lettuce were awesome this evening. I'm really loving this tune you did with Otha and I wish there was more for me to ingest.
Gangs Of New York brought me here. RIP to the priest!
what a pleasure!
Paradoxically missisppi fife and drum is reminiscent of irish fife n drum
Great stuff. Song originally was the Gospel standard "This Train", eventually morphed into "My Babe".

luther, thanks so much for uploading this. i stumbled upon the song while on an othar-based youtube safari, and it's nice to see it done live. do you mind telling me your tuning on this?
Would you call it Blues or is Fife and Drum so unique it is it's own genre? Lets hear some musicology thoughts here.
So good
king men
rythm of nature..
I'ma buy your new signature ES-335 with the P-90s and Bigsby.
TOP!!!
Does AC/DCs 'baby please don't go' originate from this song?
Baby please dont go was written by big joe williams in 1928. Other notable versions are lighnin hopkins and muddy waters to name a few.
im not sure what all he is saying, but i like it.
Thanks for sharing this great moment.
Any idea when (approximately) it has been recorded ?
TWD66 Otha Died in 2003 and Lucero formed in 98 so I'd put it probably mid to late nineties.
Jason Hitzert Thanks, I missed the reference to Lucero in the video's description :)
I was looking through the comments to find an answer to our questions and when there was none I got a little obsessed.
very good
Hi !
I'm looking for what is the tune of the Otha's fife?
And in this video, do you use a drop D on guitare?
+Michel Fernandez I have been trying to figure this out for a long, long time!!
Luther - is that a Gibson or a Guild?
Looks to me to be a Guild X-100.... clear knobs
