FAQ about food storage in glass jars Since my spice cabinet organization post, I have had a lot of questions about where I keep the extra spices that didn't fit in the little jars I used. For the spices, I didn't really have that problem. For a few of my most used spices, that I buy in bulk, I just filled two spice jars, so I can have the extra right in front of me on display. All the others were the right amount to fit in the jars. However, I did have that problem for things like oatmeal, flour, shredded coconut, popcorn and quinoa. Since I buy those things in bulk, I did have quite a bit leftover from my display. Since our upper cabinets are very tall, and difficult to access, I have a ton of extra space up there. I hardly store anything in those upper cabinets, so now I have one dedicated to bulk "refill" items. All sources for the things I used for this project are linked above. :)
I LOVE mason jars. I use them in my pantry as well. I also use them in my refrigerator for some foods. When I get home from the grocery store, I wash my grapes and take them off the stems and put them in mason jar. Also, with strawberries, I will wash them and take the green tops off and store them in a mason jar. They will last 2 weeks and sometimes longer...that is if we don't eat them first. I also put my lettuce in mason jars and then use my jar sealer to seal them and the lettuce doesn't get brown.
I love it! You inspire me and you are half my age! Which goes to show that it doesn't matter how old we are, you can learn from people who are younger than you. We are going to paint our kitchen white and I will do the inside of the cupboards white and I love the glass mason jars and how you refill them. Love you and keep on keepin your home!
I'm not sure if you are a eco friendly person but what you did here is the perfect start to using less plastic and buying in bulk to refill your jars (which I know you already do) or going to refill shops to refill them without packaging. Super awesome video. Definitely got me inspired!
The white was a huge improvement, and all that branding on the packages stacked together in cupboards is so busy. The jars give a great deal of order to it all. I'm so impressed. Now to find jars. They are a bit scarce these days. I will keep looking. The white is key. Love the white. I will buy no other color. Thanks!
Perfect timing. I'm buying a house without a pantry. This seems so doable, despite everyone telling me I'm crazy. I'm going to do a hard edit on everything in the kitchen before I love. This should help too. Thanks.
I am an avid #MentalHealthAwareness advocate and performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my RUclips channel, so I get excited when I see people spreading positivity. 💙❤
Beautiful kitchen! I love storing in glass jars and purchased the plastic lids as well. After using them for a few years, this is what I discovered: they are NOT leak proof! If they are not leak proof then they must not be keeping my food as fresh. I went back to using the canning lids and rings. If I find they are becoming rusty, I recycle and put a new one on. I have large bags of extra rings! LOL Keep up the good work! Enjoying your videos!
Lisa, love it! I’m definitely doing this. I wanted to tell you that I make my own liquid laundry soap and I store it in 12 quart mason jars. It is so pretty. It’s a concentrate so I add one quart of soap to two quarts of water in an old detergents bottle and just just that bottle lid to measure like I would regular soap. Been doing that for five years now and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. I think it’s the Duggar recipe. I use three bars of soap instead of two.
Very helpful video I cook and bake a ton for my channel so I have all type of containers, cookware, and supplies so this has inspired me to organize even more!
Looking at this video again in 2019.This is one of the first I ever saw of Farmhouse on Boone! One of my favorites because, of Lisa and her little girl working together, or her little girl working all by herself sometimes, is very impressive( and heart warming)!💗💗
I love the big mason jars. I got the package of 6 last summer and use them for my flour, sugar, brown sugar, oatmeal and pancake mixes. I like the white lid idea so I may have to get some of those. Years ago before I started making homemade sauces i used to buy the Classico spaghetti sauce. I saved all of those jars for different items in my kitchen because they are mason jar's. And they have the ounces on the side of the jar as well
I love those tall mason jars with the plastic lids. I also keep spaghetti/salsa mason jars with the black or silver lids. I have found many uses for those smaller jars too, like I used to make "sun" tea in them and store the brewing tea in the frig after the water cooled down -- two jars of "sun" tea makes a gallon of iced tea, whether real tea or herbal. I like the idea of your chalkboard cabinet doors. I have written out easy breakfast recipes and snack ideas for my guys and taped them to the back of the doors with clear postal tape. I think it's time to repaint the inside of my cabinets too. Thanks for the inspiration!
Been slowly trying to organize pantry, but knew deep down I really need to take everything out and just do it. Thanks for the inspiration! Great video!
I just went through our kitchen and I was able to donate half a tub of things we no longer used. I realized we held on to sooo many things thinking that we’ll use them “eventually”.
Glass is the way to go! I personally don’t like plastic for the fact it’s not healthy and the lids are always a disaster to store. Class jars are much less porous and can be cleaned much better. I’m curious to know where I can get the mason jars with the white lids?
@@queensryke1 I purchase the white lids for my Mason jars on Amazon but have also purchased some at Wal-Mart. They may be available in other stores too.
Love it. I also changed my food to mason jara due to a moth problem in my pantry. I highly recommend you a funnel for mason jars. It will make your life easier when you are filling them. It is pretty inexpensive (around $5) and it will change help you with clean up.
I love your little cupboards they are perfect! Our rental house only has one large DEEP cupboard for a pantry and it is so dark like an abyss! I much prefer shallow shelves, you can't lose anything! Love the black chalk paint on the doors too, great for recipes you use all the time!
Looks great!!! I would love if you could make a video of whats in your fridge/ freezer and another one more extended of whats in your pantry and how do you use things😊 .thank you for all the inspiration and teaching ❤️.
You did great! I was looking up mason jars and came across your channel. I am a newbie here on RUclips and you have inspired me to keep going! Great ideas, especially writing on the jars. I like having them on my counter. I use antique ones and I totally get the idea of plastic lids! Thanks again!
I’ve never seen the plastic lids! Those are genius. I loved your spice jar storage too. Contemplating purchasing those for our drawer. Thanks for sharing.
This is very pretty. My pantry being beautiful makes me want to keep it that way. So, I love these kinds of projects. I am very tempted to try out those glass, larger, mason jars.
Love it! I need to round up all the jars I have everywhere and see how many of the white lids I have. I have a teeny tiny pantry and I think I can incorporate this on those shelves.
I have been doing the same! I had slowly been doing it and this gives me motivation to get it done. Just came upon your channel and I am really enjoying it. Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to the laundry room.
If you run out of plastic lids the lids from mayo and mustard jars also fit. It is a major money saver to reuse those lids. My main problem is I do not have a large kitchen so I don't have a lot of cabinets or counter space. That will be my next big renovation, lower cabinets and countertops.
Just an FYI, I have a friend who eats very healthy. He makes his own fermented foods, he has sprouts of all kinds he grows etc. Despite that he started having severe health issues. Neurological symptoms etc. They traced it back to his love of tinned fish. Sardines and conch and others. They have a high heavy metal content and over time this had built up in his brain. I'd research this since this is something your husband eats as well. LOVE LOVE LOVE your content and your gorgeous home.
This is the first video of yours that I've seen, and I really enjoyed it! It was beautifully shot, well edited, and you gave great narration throughout the video. You and your daughter did a beautiful job! I look forward to exploring your catalog of videos to see what else you have to check out. Thank you for your time and hard work to produce a useful video!
Lol, I actually thought what a lovely colour the insides were. Lovely layout but the slight tin ocd I have wanted all the labels facing forward like the jars!! 😉 love those wide mouth jars.
Lisa! Love your videos, keep em coming! I just found your blog like 2 weeks ago and have already ordered some swaddle blanket fabric, made sourdough English muffins, and hunted my local thrift stores like a champ, influenced by you. :) Be well, big thanks from Vancouver, Canada!
Do you still utilize the mason jar storage in your current home? I have some items in mason jars, but not everything. I really like the way this looks! I may switch completely. Nice work! Thanks for sharing!
we found Mason Jar hand soap (but we use it for dish soap) dispensers. They are so cool and have a pump. We gave one to a neighbor who is FINALLY cleaning his house...but that's another story. Blech. Thank you for all your ideas. We sometimes do pre made salads for lunch in ours. Have you ever tried that? They are pretty yummy and look pretty in the fridge.

Excellent my friend!!!! I'm in that process of finally painting the kitchen cabinets white with the black hardware (my dream come true) after waiting 15 years. What a job! I decluttered my cabinets and threw away old expired food that was pushed in the back. I have 2 boxes full of kitchen stuff I do not use to donate. It feels GREAT but I have to be careful as I get suffer from horrific migraines. 🙋🏻🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
I'm almost embarrassed that I didn't think of using mason jars this way - I don't have use for large storage, but I love the idea of putting spices in the small jars!! I am going to do that project today!

It looks really nice and you did good job. I prefer airtight containers. Recently discovered that my local Walmart’s, Meijer and koger discontinued my containers I’ve been using. So I have to switch to Ovo brand, which is fine because I can find them on sale at the container store.
I recently went to a DAV and was shocked to find mason jars for 25 to 95 cents (even better, the day I went they were half price!). I’m slowly building up my collection so I can transition away from plastic. Once I brought out my grandmother’s Corning set, I became hooked on real things.
Perhaps putting the supplements in a bin so you can grab them all at once to bring them down would be helpful because you can't look through them unless you grab a step stool. Also I feel like it'd be easy to overlook items on the top shelf because there are too many things know what is truly there and they covering each other. The rest looks great!
Don't feel embarrassed, I can totally relate. Last year when I reorganized my pantry just after I moved, I went through much the same process and mess. It's nice to see someone else having the same process. Those weck and swing top jars are so cute, but rather impractical and expensive, so yeah I ended up with alot of Mason jars too! I especially like the pint and a half jars, I am definitely gonna have to get me some of them. 😉 Thanks for sharing your process, love the white marker for labeling idea!
Yes! They are so darn pretty, but about twice the cost of mason jars and I'm always losing the little clamp thingies. Thanks so much for being encouraging! :)
I'm new to your channel! LOVE the makeover! And, who doesn't love mason jars? I'm loving your videos! And you have a great lil helper!😄 Have a great week!
This looks fantastic! I have a few bulk items, like quinoa, rice, and beans, stored in Mason jars right above the stove. It looks so pretty - I'd love to store more things that way! It was neat to see all of the different sizes of jars you have. I also like the idea of the plastic lids instead of metal. Our kitchen is also lacking a pantry 😩. I've been trying to think of the best way to handle the food storage issue. 🙈 Thanks for the inspiration here!
The no pantry thing is kind of annoying, but at least a lot of old house have plenty of cabinetry. The new layout definitely makes it more manageable. Thanks for watching!
Farmhouse on Boone yes! Thankfully, there is the cabinet space. I'm also thinking of using storage in our laundry room off the kitchen for those bulk items. I've been binge-watching your content tonight. I'm loving learning about your whole foods approach to cooking, and I'm so inspired to see how you're accomplishing it while caring for your little ones. Awesome job! 🙌
As a teacher, I was forced to swap my beloved blackboards for white boards, which demanded wipe off pens. I was always in trouble with with caretaker, when had to ask him to come to my classroom & bring solvent, I’d used permanent marker again! I love that I can have blackboards again! I use chalk pens, from Amazon as well as good old chalk. My brother says I’m weird, but if I write something down on paper & put it “somewhere safe” it’s gone forever! I can’t lose my blackboards!

Yes to a hard edit. :) So much easier to manage!
Great video I'm moving back out on my own in a week and needed this video

Looks great! Makes me want to buy more mason jars for sure. 😂 I LOVED you letting your daughter paint alongside you. So precious. ❤️
I too ended up going back to my mason jars for almost everything. So clean and neat.
I LOVE how your daughter is helping you...including the painting task!!
I love the white mason jar lids. They don't rust and I'd have to find a 2 part lid and I can put them in the dishwasher. 👍🏼

You do a wonderful job of taking care of your family, your mom must be very proud of you!
Thank you so much Lynn! 😊
You should try labeled baskets for the items on the top shelf so things don't get lost in the back and are more easily accessible.
Love mason jars. I like to see my ingredients. Also, the white lids are a HUGE plus.
Also a tip for you make sure you write on the expiration date too on the bottom of the jars. btw I love you kitchen and the way you organize it

I think an open shelving in a farmhouse style would of been beautiful too :D but I liked what you did here tooo.
Your little girl is a powerhouse just like you.
You should put the things in upper cabinets in baskets for an easy acess
😉
Wow what a transformation.
Thank you!
You may find that storing your bulk flour and oats up high may turn them rancid faster (because of the heat). I've even had rice turn. ❤🌅🌵😷
It looks really nice and you did good job. I prefer airtight containers. Recently discovered that my local Walmart’s, Meijer and koger discontinued my containers I’ve been using. So I have to switch to Ovo brand, which is fine because I can find them on sale at the container store.
Wow! I loved that you used Mason jars. I am so inspired!!
Thank you so much Laurie! 😊
I recently went to a DAV and was shocked to find mason jars for 25 to 95 cents (even better, the day I went they were half price!). I’m slowly building up my collection so I can transition away from plastic. Once I brought out my grandmother’s Corning set, I became hooked on real things.
Looks so good. Loved how your daughter was helping.
Danielle very true!
This is what I do! I use baskets on the top shelf so it’s easy to pull things down and see everything. Helps us short people too :D
Easy to remedy, just keep a sheet with the inventory :)
Looks incredible, Lisa! What a satisfying video to watch. 😊
Thank you so much Christina! 😊
Love how nice the jars look!

Thank you so much Jessica!
Thanks for your tips! Now time to organize. :)
You sure did inspire! Thank you for the plastic lid tip, I never knew they existed!
I loove them! 😊🤗
Love the sharpie idea. :) Love your channel. ♥

Great video! Love the paint pens idea. Quick tip: you can remove sharpies and paint pens from almost any surface with nail polish remover. 😊
Oh, The cabinets look so nice Tfs.
the blue was really pretty though!
Great job! Great tips!
