They are not exaggerating. Betel nut does not taste good. Had some in PNG and definitely spit it out after a few minutes. It does make your spit turn red though. You see red spit everywhere, they basically fill up garbage bins with red spit over there.
the actual nut doesnt do that ! they make a sandwich type thing with a beetle nut leaf and they add somthing called katha and chuna !( paste type things) and then add the beetle nuts and other things to it ! Its call a PAN! google it beetle nut pan 😊 very famous in india !!

The government tried to enforce a ban on the nut and the people rioted. It was lifted after a few months but some people died in the riots over it. We call it Buatau (the nut), vaga (the lime paste) and ahi (mustard paste or sometimes just raw mustard)
