Watching your face was priceless! Kiaara cannot sing this song live - it's ALL digital effects and autotuning. Mitch just goes "that's ok, I'll do it all with my mouth and slide between the notes". I think Kevin's beatboxing and Avi's bass is phenomenal. I'm not really a fan of the original but I love this version of it. It's so stripped back it really shows their amazing vocal control.

The expression on your face at the end of the song was definitely worth the price of admission!
Mitch's ability to do naturally without the looping and digital effects that Kiiara used, the beatbox/bass breakdown, and the Trio sharing the final chorus - all make this such a fun video to see reactors watch, especially if they know the original song!
This was a one take video as well. Everyone knew and executed their part to give us another vocal master class.
Gold is like a perfect little gem. I could never get sick of it. The harmonies and dynamics just ring, Mitch's part is gorgeous, the variations at the end are genius, the way Kirstie and Scott were tripling Avi's bass rhythm was intense, and Kevin was the perfect engine. I cannot describe how much I love this cover.
I think what they "breathed" into this cover was humanity. The synth of the original was cool and inventive, but to humanize the feeling of the lyrics just worked wonders.
I can't begin to name the songs that were never anything special to me until I heard Pentatonix upgrade them. "Gold" is probably at the top of the list. I love their one-take videos, where you can watch each member adding their own special essence to propel the song forward. This one shows how they can take a highly digitized song and recreate it in their own style, with their own superhuman effects. Brilliant! Great reaction, as always!
Nearly all reactors to this say they are not familiar with the Kiara original. A few have done the two versions back-to-back and so can see how amazing the difference is. This is a song that shows why all of the others point to Mitch when an interviewer asks them who is the best singer in the group. Many of us recommend this one to those who want to be able to see what each member does during the entire song. It was fun watching your pleasure and amazement throughout the song.

You really need to listen to the original and then this cover. The original uses a lot of autotune and other electronic effects to get the final part to sound the way it does. Pentatonix did it with only their voices. This is one of the videos we fans like to use when people say "they don't sound like that live" Yes, dear. The sound just as good live as they do in studio.

Boy, I do love to watch you react to Pentatonix! I found them during the pandemic and immediately enjoyed their performances. Realizing that people with music knowledge enjoy and admire them too is so reassuring. I may not know why, but I do know what appeals to me. These live, in-studio videos are always impressive. Evidently they run through a song a couple of times and then just go with the one that’s best. Peace from Ohio …

This is one my favorite Pentatonix songs.
After hearing this I checked out the original. I don't mind that Kiiara is using a lot of processing, and the song is interesting for the first minute or so, but then it doesn't go anywhere. She seems to be repeating the same few lines over and over without any dynamics or development. With PTX the song keeps growing and evolving with every verse.

I'd never heard this song before and thought it a bit repetitive the first listen through. Then I went and found the original which I didn't care for at all. Came back and listened to this one again and started noticing the details - the layers, Kevin's beatboxing is stellar in this one and reactors don't usually comment on that. Yes, Mitch is excellent, but we all expect that. I feel like this key is right in his strongest, most comfortable wheelhouse because he hits all those notes so effortlessly. I really enjoy their one-take videos like this....just fabulous!

Yay I was waiting for you to get to this one. To me it’s one of the best examples of their skill. When you get a chance, watch the original song again - kiiara uses looping and recording to hit that range of notes. Mitch just does it because he’s an ALIEN! 😂

Exactly what I needed! Thank you so much Sean! I really liked the original, but Mitch can do the octave changes/run on the chorus which is extremely difficult. Kiiara doesn't sing the hook in one take. They cut and splice her vocals together, plus add autotune.

Great reaction. I am not a fan of the original. If I had to describe it, I would say "interesting". But the Pentatonix upgrade I call it "entirely enjoyable". One of my top ten favorite Pentatonix songs.

To be fair, I heard this first from Pentatonix.
So when I heard the original, I didn't like it at all.
It's full of synth noise and looping.
After hearing this upgrade, the way it's done so perfectly. Each and every sound is so crisp and clear.
The original sounds forced, fake and hollow.
It may just be the pentaholic in me though. Lol

I have to agree with your analysis.. Heard this cover first, loved it and was very impressed. Thought I should listen to the original. Part way through that I'm saying to myself "this is so tedious, when will it ennnddd?" Whereas one of my reactions to the Pentatonix cover had been "it's so short!" An upgrade indeed and still one of my favourites.
I know a lot of people love this, but other than PTX's wonderful voices and harmonies, I just don't get the appeal.
That is the appeal though- the techniques with the crescendos and passing off the words in the sentence. I don’t care about the song but have grown to love listening to the parts and expertise.

Great reaction! I hated the original, its an auto tuned, digital piece of 💩, IMHO. Mitch made it a song I can listen to over and over. Avi and Kevin really stand out too! PTX gave it such a chill vibe.
