This is a fantastic doco. Kenny is still spoken of by the older Wigan fans despite playing only one partial season. Notice at 21:36 the first thing he does at the hooter is run to his mates on the Hull team to console them rather than celebrate, he was all class.

I was there that day too. Cheering on the Airlie Birds. I thought we were going to pinch it at the end. Not mentioned by anyone but Hull had a number of youngsters in the side, Crooks, Schofield, Divorty and Puckering. I believe they were all teenagers. Edwards being the notable Wigan youngster. Have to say though that Kenny was sheer class. Went home disappointed but still love to watch this every now and then.

Still, I suppose I could watch re-runs of thrilling games like this one, tries being scored from everywhere, the ball going through the hands right from tackle one etc. What we used to love about it.

A wonderful game and the 99,801 was only second to the Odsal replay in 1954 that drew 102,569 officially ( 120,000 unofficially ).I actually failed to get a ticket to this game.I wanted to go so bad.Lots and lots of star players on the field that day.Peter Stering still the best player I ever saw.

  • @grahamlowe7388

Kenny was a brilliant stand off, so sad to hear about his battle with cancer hang in there Brett. Sublime skills and blistering pace. Gloss over his apparent throwing the next game a premiership semi at knowsley Road against Meninga's St. Helens. John Ferguson is loved by wigan fans, pace, strength elusiveness. Sterling had a great game, so did wigans half mike ford an amazing match. I also watched Hull KR put in a great defensive performance to stop Menninga on a damp night at Knowsley Road. We only saw 1 season of menninga in the uk.
Remember fattys and O'connors wembley in 89, ran into Hanley and co? Hanley at his peak, Wigans greatest ever all round player.
One of Wigan's favorite aussies is gene miles in 92 he formed what I argue is the greatest centre wing partnership in club history. Miles at 4 Offiah at 5.
Wigan often concentrated on high quality kiwis like dean bell, Iro, Tuigamala, West and co.
Lewis played with a relatively weak team in wakefield trinity, It's a pity he never played a season or three with a powerful english team and played in a challenge cup.
Gavin miller was also a quality player in them days at Hull kr.
Stay safe down under and our pals in NZ, hope you guys come up for the ashes battle once this virus is gone, still suffering it in the UK.

Hi fella, I went to this final with my mate. We along with many Wigan fans, were on the lash in Wigan on the Friday night. The Bees Knees pub (Manly were there in 87 after their defeat against Wigan, we had Merrydown cider with Michael O'Connor and Mal Cochrane, top blokes as all the Aussies were, despite their loss, we all got properly shitfaced) then onto the Pier nighclub. Got up early but we had to surrender our beer at the train station, Wigan North Western, bloody British Rail porters snaffled all the decent cans the thieving bar stewards!
Arrived at Wembley, we had an impromptu game of rugby with the Hull speccies, no idea who won but it was a loaf of bread as the ball. Had some beers at the pub before Wembley Way, then onto the game. What a game it was.... superb game of rugby league, or as you fellas down under say footie!
A lasting memory of that day was a banner held behind us in the Wigan end, a big white bedsheet on sticks saying in bright red "May the Fourth Be With You!"
Says it all really, thanks for the upload, brought back a lot of memories. Brett, Sterlo, Fergie, Gilly.... cheers mate.

Being a huge Parra fan from NZ it was great to see the likes of Sterlo, Bert and Muggleton on the pitch as well as Ah Kuoi, Leuleai, Kemble & O'Hara. 1983 at International Sports Centre Newcastle. City won 30 - 14.
1984 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. City won 38 - 12.
1986 at the International Sports Centre Newcastle. City won 34 - 18.

I was living in Birmingham at the time 1985 just a pity Mal,Fatty, Wally,Bob Lindner weren't playing that day. It's the only game of Rugby League that I got to watch because back in those days they didn't Televised Origin or the Grand final live we had to wait for Newspaper and VHS tapes to be posted to us but in glad way back in Australia by 1987 to watch the QLD resurgence, after the narrow lose of 85 and the Whitewash in 86.
