Amazing performance. This song means so much to me. It captures exactly how I felt during the two years I spent separated from my husband while trying to get him safely to the US, and the week of hell when he was detained in Malaysia and I had to bust him out of a filthy prison camp. Thank you for creating such an empowering anthem.
Generally speaking, absolutely yes! Malaysia is a wonderful place to visit, and I would not want anybody to think poorly of the Malaysian people as a result of our experience. But not if you are an undocumented migrant, such as a refugee or a guest worker whose papers were forged or allowed to lapse by your employer. My husband met several such people during his week-long stay in a concrete cell with 30 other men, no beds, no fan, etc. Each one had a sad story to tell, and most had little recourse, unlike him. The immigration authorities who I spoke with (extensively, because I pestered them in their offices every day from open to close) told me that part of the problem was simply a lack of funding for suitable facilities. But surely cooperating more with UNHCR and stepping up enforcement against abusive employers could keep more folks out of these heinous conditions. As an American, sadly, there's not much I can say. We are treating asylum seekers horribly here as well - and we seem to have built in a profit incentive to do so as more companies construct taxpayer-funded "detention facilities".
Eighteenth I think she rocks the smaller venues a bit more than the big ones where she seems to get out of breath. I've seen her at the Paradise rock club in Boston and the Chameleon in Lancaster PA, both pretty tiny and I felt she nailed it.
