Hell yeah. This is why I'm subbed here, sensible solutions to regular stuff. Thanks.
BTW, a ground rod should help lightning impulses bleed off without doing much damage. Nothing protects against a direct strike but grounding is how the big cell towers and radio towers stay on the air though storms and strikes. I now use antennas that are grounded by design to protect my ham gear.

Thanks! I tried a grounding rod and still lost 2 more.... Thanks for the idea though.

Neat solution. Also as usual thank you for including the links to the items, you are always good about that. I would like to learn more about remote controls so I am looking forward to the upcoming videos and wiring diagrams. Yes we are doing well here in east Tennessee. Our place is very hilly like yours. You have a nice property for sure. And again thank you for the videos and for sharing your knowledge. Very practical.

Thanks Glenn, I should have done it several years ago. It would have saved me a lot of money but I was too lazy to stop and figure it out. It working great now, hope it keeps it up. There is a storm brewing now so who knows. Hope you have a good weekend.

Yea you should be able to prevent the destruction with a faraday cage [metal box / screen] surrounding the components and that cage grounded deep in the dirt with a rod. Really awesome cheap hack though. You could add cheap analog circuit to add the functionality of stopping with the hand pull switch. If in motion, start switch becomes stop and reverses with more relays. Definitely doable. Though your method is simplest and works good

I think the main problem is the pull chains that are down the hill a little acting as antennas to bring in the lightning. I finally tried disconnecting them and didn't have as much trouble but had to connect them every time I expected someone to need one of them .

Very interesting! Thank you thank you thank you! I have 2 sets of dual mighty mule openers and I have had it with repairing them and replacing parts and this project is a bit beyond me, but I'm willing to figure it out. I am done dealing with the dang service line. My warranties are going to run out soon so I think I will do what I can to get smart enough to make this kind of thing happen for the future.

This is the one I have amzn.to/35aSopR and it works great for me. There are alot of different ones that work about the same.
