whoever you are tytytytytyty for posting this... Hemphill is underplayed and under heard, saw him in Ann Arbor and elsewhere whenever I could.... I miss him... wonderful stuff... pieces of everyone and everything is everywhere in his music... what a voice....
...more relevant than ever before in these increasingly weird times... thanks so much for taking the time to upload it, my copy of th LP is LONG gone...cheers...
This reminds me of one of my fav tracks from Les stances a Sophie by AEC; brilliant music - merci beaucoup. First heard this on an old radio station Arista/Freedom sampler I found. What a label.
Oh Wow!! Haven't heard this in some years...wonderful! Makes me smile... Really dig Wadud's cello--always right there...so damn good! Love this tune!!!
this is the old version with Julius. listen to the instrumentation. trpt, alto, bari, out in front. cello playing the bass line. the Ehrlich version is wonderful but uses all saxophones.
Excellent to stumble upon this at last. I could never find the record. Arresting piece of music. Question: I once heard some other Hemphill on the radio, about 15 years ago, or Ned Rothenberg, but lost my notes. There was a piece of music, I think by one or the other musician, and it reminded me in part of King Crimson. Maybe it was Rainbow Gladiator? A wild guess, but any idea what the tune might have been, or by who?
I read this in Wikipedia about J. H.: "His saxophone sextet, led by Marty Ehrlich, also released several albums of Hemphill's music, but without Hemphill playing. The most recent is titled The Hard Blues, recorded live in Lisbon after Hemphill's death", Is he playing in this album or is a different song?.
RIP Abdullah Wadud! can’t think of a more iconic jazz cello performance, what a loss
GREAT BLACK MUSIC!!!Treasured by many, misunderstood by too many others....
This feels like direct contact with the noumenon... breathtaking
What can I say, this tune inspired my life, and yes, few understand... don't care...
Abdul Wadud RIP. Damn.

The future as archetype, ancient Black music to come, love it, wish somebody would remaster it and clean it up
B.A.G. Lives
Phenomenal piece of music all around....what a DEADLY ASS swing by the drummer.....
Incredible resilience...power...and vision....A CONSUMIMG FORCE...This fits like a Tailor Made Suit !!!!!!!!!
That is the great late Phillip Wilson on the drums. A master drummer too little remembered.
