  • Unfortunately this happens to all entertainment journalists at one point in their career. They ask questions that the talent or people around them don't like. In this episode I am sharing some of the uncomfortable situations I have been in myself and some other behind the scenes secrets. Hope you like it.

As a Swiss person I can't believe that there are celebrities like Bill Murray out there who let other people wait for 5 hrs and even have the audacity to show up with bad manners. This just shows once again that Hollywood is some type of "parallel universe", these personalities are only surrounded by enablers who let these things fly. If Bill Murray would live within the Swiss society, where politeness, good manners and punctuality are highly valued, he would have been humbled rather quickly.

To be honest. I am Kind of tired of Hollywood, movies and celebrities in general. Sometimes I ask myself… who do they think they are? They are normal people that shit, sleep and eat like us “normal” people. Their arrogance and narcissistic behavior turns me off so much. And especially now, that they are all gaslighting their fans about politics…. Their mystery is gone. At least for me. Greetings from Germany 🫶🏻

I agree that celebrities shouldn't be rude, and that journalists shouldn't have to compromise their standards, but am I missing something here: if a journalist discovers that celebrities are unreliable news sources, aren't they free to go elsewhere? I probably wouldn't advise someone to try to make a living by interviewing people who don't want to be interviewed, any more than by reporting on empty air, you know?

I'm glad you brought up Bill Murray. People who are "in" with him tout his characteristics are being quirky and funny. From everything I've heard he sounds very disrespectful. There was an interview Sofia Coppola did where she brought up her anxiety with getting him to do "Lost in Translation". They didn't know until the rest of the cast was casted and the crew was picked that he would agree to do it. He ignored phone calls, made people wait for hours on end to start shooting. He doesn't sound like a kind person. Jason Statham seems lovely though! :)

I used to be a music journalist for an alternative weekly in Toronto. My worst experience ever was interviewing Tom Jones. He was promoting some dance record that was pretty awful. The interview had to take place in a limousine en route to a suburban mall where he was signing records. He was so distant and blasé even though I was trying my best to ask him good questions. When we finally arrived at the mall, I just wanted to go home, but the record company promotional person insisted that I get an autograph. I feigned enthusiasm and said, ‘Sure. That would be alright.’ I was then asked to join the lineup of seniors waiting to get their records signed. Somewhere there’s a photo of me in the lineup probably wondering to myself if Engelbert Humperdinck would pull this shit. My second worst interview was with Diana Krall. 😅

I witnessed first hand a Jason Statham situation and it was so uncomfortable for everyone! The celebrity I was with was so lovely and was genuinely laughing about what was happening but his handlers (given for that day, not hand-picked by said celebrity) were not happy and complained. To anyone on the receiving end of the complaint, it would appear that it was, in fact, the celebrity doing the complaining. I had nothing to do with that particular situation, just a spectator to it and immediately knew how it looked. I felt horrible for him because he was truly a nice person and visibly went out of his way to NOT be difficult. All the way around, I would not wish to switch places with any famous person and their public life.

I can imagine it is difficult to do interviews-for actors and journalists. The setting is professional for both actors and interviewers, but you want it to appear casual and friendly. Celebrities are critiqued so harshly for everything they say which means they want to ensure the topics they are asked they feel comfortable presenting. I have seen journalists asking uncomfortable questions to get a shocking interview. Now we are seeing how actors who become famous may feel the power has shifted and they can make demands of the interview.
Mutual respect and an understanding of the goals of each party would go a long way. It seems very challenging!

I often think that actors go into that profession because they lack the integrity to do a regular job. Of course that's not true of everyone, but I can not imagine getting paid millions for a relatively short, cushy, job, and not doing all of the work to the best of my ability. They'll tell you that acting is skillful, but is it really? There's so many of them, and they're just people who are capable of being a puppet for a short amount of time before retreating back into unemployment. They just got lucky to have been given a good script, and technical team.

Hi Kjersti. I really appreciate your honesty. I can only imagine how mindlessly boring it is for both the interviewer and the celebrity. It must be tedious for you to have to ask silly questions like "How was it working with so and so?" knowing that they won't give a truthful answer. The celebrity has to sit through several hours of people asking them the same questions over and over. However, like you said, they get paid a lot of money. I really like the way you interview. More personable and asking questions that the viewer would like to know. It's a shame that Elton's John's handlers wouldn't let you ask any questions except about the movie because he looked like he was going to lapse into a coma from boredom.😄

For transparency's sake, it should be noted that Anthony Hopkins is autistic. Neurodivergent people do not always react in the expected way, and they typically mask during social interactions. The junket system is like a huge amount of forced social interactions, condensed over a very short amount of time, stressful enough for neurotypical celebrities.
Imagine that stress magnified x10, that incrementally increases with each possible repetition of the same questions. What can they do? They either leave to protect themselves or they stay ,and either push through and melt down once they leave, or worse, during an interview.
People forget that, in a society where neurodivergent people exist in all walks of life, there are going to be celebs who are privately diagnosed with adhd, autism, bpd, bipolar or a combo of several, for whom, this part of their job is something they find an actual living nightmare.
With that said, I know some actors actually appreciate it when you switch the questions up ( even if their pr person is giving you daggers)

While I dont agree with celebrities being rude and agree that they should be definitely respectful to journalists: Even celebrities should not be completely dehumanized and should be allowed to have a choice whether they want to talk about something or not. Otherwise it'd end up being dictatorship from the side of the press. Respect goes both ways. There should be boundaries on both sides. I believe in honest and respectful communication and coming to a compromise that both sides are ok with. Also, it's not always up to you to decide what is personal questions or not. That's my take on that.

He had a bit of a temper tantrum 😂 and wanted to be asked something other than all the things you mentioned. Now it’s funny because he refuses to be asked anything outside of the movie he made. People are growing tired of celebrities?! Well, that is DEFINITELY news to me, and probably to every celebrity who has to deal with having paparazzi show up everywhere they go. You may be right…perhaps people are growing tired of celebrities, but here’s the thing…people STILL love to hate on them, and it doesn’t matter to the sites, the magazines and the entertainment news tv shows if the audience likes or hates celebrities …just that they keep coming to those sources to talk about them.
Not every writer needs to be killing themself to cover sad stories around the world or trying to write the next Great American Novel…get real. You have some pretty lofty and very judgmental ideas about what a journalist should or shouldn’t be doing. People enjoy hearing about their favourite entertainers. There is no shame in writing fun short copy that entertains, and even better, actually pays the bills. Those great long form works of journalism you might read about something like, say, someone who has been trying desperately to prevent an innnocent family member from being put to death for a crime they didn’t commit…well, that kind of journalism isn’t cheap to create. It often requires travel, a ton of hours in research, and a whole lot of having to do interviews on someone else’s difficult schedule. Most people don’t have the resources to do that kind of writing unless they have another source of financial support or work for a news organization that has very deep pockets and is willing to give tbeir writers a lot of time and flexibility. There are very few places in publishing left today that have the kind of budgetary stability that would allow for them to pay their writers fairly for longform articles. It’s extremely difficult to make a steady income as a freelance writer, so maybe think tiwce before you attempt to shame one because she’s eked out a successful living writing about topics you don’t approve of!

In almost 2 decades in animation, I've "worked" with many celebrities. Like 2 ever bothered to show up to the studio and see what they were putting their name to: Vince Vaughn and Judy Greer. They barely interact with animated productions, whether they are actors, musicians, producers on the film. Maybe if it were the Lion King, he'd want to focus on that for the prestige, a "real" movie in their eyes, but Sherlock Gnomes...no. I think he could have answered your question. Jason Statham seemed annoyed by his handler and very friendly. It's interesting, several of the people you mention in yr vids I have also met, or close friends have. I had a friend who lived in HI for awhile and Elton was a regular at a local cafe. He was super friendly to my friend and they hung out a lot. I worked at a drug store in NC decades ago and Matt Broderick and SJP came in. They proceeded to buy practically the entire stock of enemas and lube, giggling the whole time. A couple of immature kids, very nice. Long ago.
