Really amazing fact that of all the Rhine castle's it is the only one never conquered. This video is a great virtual visit.

Jennifer Stith 1) get the drink package if you enjoy alcohol. It is worth it. 2) wear good walking shoes to Marksburg castle 3) the optional tour of the Colmar region is worth it if you're a history buff and 4) enjoy every minute. 😉
Oh, and the pillows get really flattened. It kind of sucked on our first cruise. I found a couple of small ones and put them in a compression bag for the one we took last year.

One other little secret, the first night when after the presentation when they send everyone downstairs for dinner, don't go. Stay upstairs and eat on the auquavit terrace. You will have an amazing experience. A personal chef, server and bartender will see to your dining wishes. It is truly luxurious.

Jennifer Stith Wow, will do. Is the food as good as in the main dinning room?

When I visited Marksburg Castle in 2008, the tour was only given in German. Luckily, I understand the German spoken in that area pretty well.

I noticed that this excursion is listed as "demanding". How difficult is it? This is my first Viking Rhine cruise. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks for asking, Carol, and for your interest. Our “Demanding” shore excursions typically encompass physically challenging activities, including extensive walking, oftentimes on difficult and unpaved surfaces and/or multiple stairs and steep inclines. Total time walking or standing may exceed 3 hours. Guests may need to board and disembark transport, including coaches, trains and boats. We hope this helps your search, and encourage you to call us directly at 877-668-4546 should you have additional questions about your journey. Have a great day!

We were there in 2016, took the castle tour. We were retirees then, but still managed to do the tour without much difficulty. Lot of walking up to and inside the castle, but worth it! Best preserved castle we've ever seen.

I remember the slog up to the Castle from the train station many years ago when I was younger. Not sure that I'd try to tackle it as a creaky geriatric. Certainly not sorry to have experienced it once in my life though. Stunning views, fascinating interiors and marvelous armor collection.
