I've noticed across battle reports all over the net people rarely ever play Cold One Knights but almost always play Dark Riders, why are they the preferred cavalry choice for Dark Elves?

Good question! A few key takeaways here: 1) Cold One Knights are Heavy Cavalry, whereas Dark Riders are Fast Cavalry. Heavy Cav need to be maneuvered like a regular unit (wheeled, reformed, etc.) whereas Fast cavalry can “freely” reform during movement (almost like a flying unit, but you cannot move over objects,) which makes them a lot more maneuverable. Add this to the Cold One’s movement of 7” (8” mount -1” for Barding) and the Dark Rider’s movement of 9” and you have very different maneuverability in a game where movement is king.
      2) Cold one knights are Special, Dark riders are Core. Because 25% of your points need to be spent on Core, EVERY army can spend their Core “tax” comfortably on Dark riders, whereas spending Special points on Cavalry means you’re building your strategy around them.
      3) Heavy Cav in 8th is not very good. You have one round of combat to break a unit in an edition where Steadfast is a rule (units are Stubborn when they have more ranks) so 5 Cold one Knights will not achieve much. Dark riders, on the other hand, are ALMOST AS GOOD in combat, are cheaper by a large margin, still have a solid armor save (mounted + light armor + shields) and have multi shotting armor piercing crossbows on a high ballistic skill. Couple this with their speed and they are a deadly skirmish unit that, in many games, can never be charged (can maneuver behind units over and over) while peppering them with crossbow bolts, and are flexible and fast enough to hunt war machines.
TL;DR Cold One Knights are a niche unit that requires you to build around them and Dark Riders are OP for their cost and can fit in every list (core.) They achieve different things and this is not to say that Cold One Knights are bad, but you will see Dark Riders way more on the tabletop because of above.

Cold ones are stupid. So you have to pass an LD roll each round to move them how you want. Otherwise, it's random. Granted, I'm not sure if they are in this version. It's a hard pill to swallow when your hammer unit can't contribute when you need them.
I had a list that had two knight units and two cold one chariots. I failed Ld rolls on all of them for two rounds. They randomly rolled into a formation that put then in line with the empire players two cannon. The shots skipped just perfect to obliterate all four units. So end of round two I lost almost 50% of my points. Bad luck on my side and all good luck on his. I still played the game through, but my Spearman, Xbox units and two bolt throwers were just delaying the impossible. I just wanted to take as many as possible before the last round.

Yes. I think most/all of the recent pre-filmed fantasy games are.

They aren’t cheating, they were both playing new armies. People make mistakes
