I was taught to slip my hand under the pad before tightening the girth, and lift it up into the saddle gullet to create a couple of inches of air flow and releave tension off of the neck (where it shouldn't be sitting anyway) and withers.

Do you know what brand you’re saddle is? We have a big mini also and her pony saddle does not fit. You’re looks like it fits great!
