- The video shows the castle Blessed Virgin Mary Church in 2013 and 2021.
The castle chapel existed from the first phase of the castle's construction at the end of the 13th century. In connection with the change of function and increased importance of the fortress after the capital of the Teutonic state was moved to Malbork in 1309, the chapel was enlarged: a presbytery with polygonal closure was added from the east, and in 1344 the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in its place.
As a result of warfare, in early 1945, the castle church suffered severe damage. The chancel and the main tower fell into ruins, the Gothic vault collapsed. The statue of the Virgin Mary and Child from an external niche and elements of the furnishings were destroyed. In the 50's and 60's its main walls were rebuilt, the interior was covered with a reinforced concrete ceiling and a high saddle roof with ceramic tiles was erected.
In the years 2014-2016, it was given a new form by rebuilding the star vaults and reconstructing in the outer niche of the presbytery the mosaic figure of Mary with the Child Jesus, the symbol of the city of Malbork and the German Order.

Figure of Mary with Child
The most important element of the external decoration was a huge statue of Mary with Child. The monumental, 8-metre high figure of the Madonna and Child was the largest medieval sculpture in Europe, which is why it was called the Colossus of Malbork. The statue was made around 1340, cast in segments from the so-called artificial stone and richly polychromed; several decades later it was additionally covered with colourful mosaics by Venetian masters. For over 600 years the Madonna was the symbol of the castle and the city. But then came the year 1945, a tragic year for the castle and all of Malbork. As a result of warfare the tower collapsed, the church collapsed and the statue lay in ruins. In the 60's of XX century the church was rebuilt, but without the Colossus. You had to wait 71 years to be able to admire the splendour and dignity of the Madonna again. The 15-ton Madonna statue demolished in 1945 returned to its place on April 16, 2016. The reconstructed statue is made of more than 60% original segments, excavated from post-war rubble. It measures over 8 meters and is covered with over 300 thousand tesserae, or mosaic elements. Glass cubes used for its covering were imported from Venice, while the elements covered with gold were made in Gdańsk. The collection of mosaic cubes excavated from the rubble included 7936 tesserae.
A plaster cast of the Madonna's head
The 19th century brought a series of conservation and repair works to the increasingly deteriorating sculpture. During the conservation works carried out in 1903, a plaster cast of the Madonna's head, preserved in the museum's collection, was made.
The Golden Gate
The most magnificent surviving example of architectural plasticity is the Golden Gate, made at the end of the 13th century as the main entrance to the castle church. The temple gate - a symbol of entry into Heaven and a promise of justice - was decorated with low-relief figural and floral motifs, expressing the idea of the Last Judgement with the parable of the Virgins of Prudence and Disconsideration. The content was enriched by an apocalyptic theme expressed by numerous fantastic creatures, woven into the rich floral decoration of the capitals and archvolts.
Sculpture "Christ in the Garden of Olives"
This world-class gothic work of art dates from around 1390. It is the most valuable gothic work of art on the territory of the Teutonic state, of fundamental importance for the fine style in European art and for the development of art in Central Europe. Since 1961 it has been exhibited in the Castle Museum in Malbork, being the most valuable monument in the museum's collection.
