Pizza and beer is pretty standard for helping a friend for a couple of hours with moving. These days, tossing in some money for gas would be nice as well. If you know someone fairly well there's no harm in asking politely and if they don't want to, that's fine. If it's hitting up a coworker you barely know and expecting lots of heavy lifting and repeatedly hauling things across the city, that's another matter.

I tried that with one of my brothers. It didn't work. I helped him move a few times and he didn't even give anything like food or pop for the help. I don't even think I heard a thank you but I figured one day I would need his help and I ended up needing his help ( bc he has a truck) to return a small couch to costco. He always claimed he was too busy. It didn't matter what day it was. I would randomly ask him for over a year if he could spare an hour of his time anyday of the week. Needless to say, he never helped me. Im definitely never helping him move again! Also, I can see why now he had to have his little sister do so much for him when moving. I'm sure he burned all those bridges with his friends.

At my facility, I had to undergo their training program before they’d even leave me alone with a pack. Just because you love dogs doesn’t mean you can predict them and read their body language. Safety procedure is only part of keeping them safe

    • @Ragehunger
      @Ragehunger 2 года назад +2

I always argue that majority of dog lovers don't even understand half of dog psychology. They only see dogs as emotional support, a family member or their "baby", and not as the pack animals they instinctively are. A pack animal requires a leader, and those dog owners won't act the part, so it makes them unfit as dog owners by default no matter how well they treat their dogs. If there were laws in place prohibiting people from owning dogs unless they not only went through a mandatory dog psychology course, but also had to pass a bunch of practical tests and be frequently evaluated, I'm certain that the number of dog owners would drastically decline.

The digging story brings me back to when my parents needed to repaint a rubber based paint on the walls to prevent water from soaking into the basement. This meant my dad and I (with a bit of help from my sis and nephew) would dig down ~8ft, 2ft wide and about 8ft long. After that was done, we filled the hole, refilled after the water compacted everything, and then moved the remaining dirt to the garden. We then filled the area with concrete for a patio which took about 3000 lbs worth. It was exhausting but it was a really good workout. Not to mention, my parents saved a ton of money just doing them themselves with me as their helper.

For decent ethical people, the two coupons should have been split between the couples, with each paying for the meal not covered by the coupon.

The digging holes story reminds me of the time when my brother, father and I had to basically dig up our own drain field because the septic tank was overflowing. We spend a whole summer obliterating the overgrown trees and shrubs that had grown into the drain field, then dug about 35 feet of trench and filled it with drain rock. The point I’m making here mainly is about the ground though, we live in the high desert of Oregon, so digging here involves a lot of sand, clay and volcanic rock. I’ll never forget spending a whole day chopping away at solid clay with a pickax. So 200 bucks for the job itself doesn’t even account for the physical material, not even to mention how rocky or root filled that ground might be

Food is the normal payment for friends/ coworkers helping you move. Helping a person move is one of those normal favors that come up in a friendship. I've helped multiple friends move, and that's literally all I expect-- that they at least provide beverages so everyone keeps hydrated. Food is also generally expected, and you're kind of seen as a cheapskate if you don't provide it, but it's not ABSOLUTELY required.

I've been a mover when I was young (during school vacations). It's had work.
I don't have a truck or even the licence...
    but
you can bet I've been enlisted to "help" family and even THEIR friends moving for the next 5 years or so... no compensation of course
you can also bet that I either had back pain or no free time after that...
when you work as a professional mover, you have hardware to help...
when you help moving for free, they don't have anything most of the time and it make it 2 times harder
at least, my main job was to dismantle the furnitures and put it back together afterward, save lots of hard work on my side and a lot of time for everyone else. Knowing the "how to" dismantling and geting back together of the furniture save time, space and money (when done correctly). Never forget that an ikea type of wardrobe is made to be put together ONE time... after that, it depend on how "gentle" you were when dismantling.
Hire a pro who has an assurance against the damage... but if they're scammers, they will do it fast and neat and you will recoup the money you paid them by not buying new furniture to replace the broken ones... way less stressful too
also, remember to picture where you want your furniture in the new place... moving it again and again is hard on the body, but even more on the mental when Karen is telling you repeatedly "a little more to the left, no, back a little to the right etc etc for 10 minutes for each piece. A little bit of imaging and preparation save a lot of time and effort

A loose-knit community helping each other move in exchange for pizza and beer sounds pretty normal, providing of course you're open to helping the next person along for the same terms. Coming from an acquaintance, I would categorise this kind of request as by no means mandatory, but nice of you to agree to. OP was definitely correct to offer petrol money. Truck colleague has every right to refuse so this story seems like a NAH rating.
The house deposit person makes no mention of how they'll afford to pay for THE REST OF THE HOUSE PRICE. I know that the housing market is bonkers, but red flags there. And as I understand it, crowdfunding is not a very *quick* way to make money, so what I see going down is OP starts soliciting donations, the house meanwhile sells to someone who can afford it, OP keeps whatever donations they get, and the donors get scammed.

About the digging one. My parents bought some land that had a massive slope and was literally sand instead of dirt. There had previously been a house that had an oil tank leak, and the city just never cleaned it up (it was the city's property before my parents bought it) so my brother and I had to help my parents clean out the first layer and replace it with actual soil. Also, every year we had to add more cause it would sink slowly creating a massive dent in our yard. Over the 6 or so years we had that property, the least amount of time it took us to fill in the dent was 6 hours, with 7 people in total (My family, a dude we were paying, and 2 friends) by the end of it, we were all exsausted and had filled in roughly a 50x65 area.

And just because something is common doesn't mean it should be the rule. Kinda like when we were teenagers and I was always asked for rides to places because I was the only one with a license. If you have a pickup you get requests all the time to help someone move, haul something from the store, etc. For good friends that's fine, if they offer pizza I'll gladly accept but I don't expect anything, we help each other out as needed. Casual acquaintances on the other hand are a pain. A few of them are thankful, most of them have the attitude "well you have the truck already, it's not costing you anything". So the truck is conveniently "in the shop, waiting on parts". That's the handy thing about having a vintage truck, half the time that's a true statement anyway ;)

The moving and truck story, the guy wasn't an asshole for asking the truck owner to move, and, he offered to pay for the gas. That said, I used to be the person who would help a friend or family member for small stuff if they asked. Mostly, it was computer issues, but sometimes I'd help with other small things. The reason I did this was, my mindset at the time was 'well, if I help them, I'll have them to help me if I'm ever in need.' Yea. I was wrong. I learned that the hard way. So, I stopped helping them for free. Made a lot of people who called me family really mad. But hear me out. I don't think this qualifies as me being a choosing beggar. Computers can be expensive to get fixed (I speak from experience, I run a shop now.) and if anyone needed parts, then obviously I'd have them pay for said parts, because I'm not buying a $1,000 GPU for someone else's PC with my money, but anyway... They were mechanics. Looking at prices of labor alone around here, the other local PC shop charges $400 an hour for labor, and most mechanic shops charge similarly. I wasn't running my shop back then, when I was helping them, and the $400 an hour shop was the only one around. So, obviously with labor costs being so close, I wrongly expected that I would be helped if I ever needed it. One day, my fuel pump died in my truck. So, I called up every person who was a mechanic that I ever helped, and asked each of them to come and help me. Nada. None of them. So, needless to say, that taught me a very valuable lesson. Taught me two actually, as I decided that I needed to know how to work on engines, too. I don't tell many people that because I only work on my cars if they ever need it, and, while I'm good at it now, I run a PC repair shop and have no intentions of expanding to become a mechanic shop any time soon. Then again, I put the honesty back in running a business around here when I opened and only charged $30 an hour as opposed to $400.

Like said in other statements. the Food and drink, along with gas money for helping move is fine for somebody that you know. So that by itself doesn't make the person an asshole or a choosing beggar as long as they know the person decently. Yes having a truck can get you asked to help more often but even without a truck you can still be asked to help move stuff.
For the restaurant story what the people should have done is called the manager over, asked to have the bills split for each couple and left the manager do deal with those two. The bridge is already burned, why pay the extra $20 - $30+ for their meals. All that did is leave them to try that with somebody else in the future. Had they been forced to pay for their meal that would have been a wake up call for them. They probably do stuff like this often and the other couple just paying for them allows it to happen.

I had never had a friend treat me that way and since I had only known her for 1 month at that point, I didn't fuss with her about it.
I honestly forgot about it until I heard that story. So it never affected our friendship going forward.

In Aus everyone has a ute or knows someone with a ute and if not most decent cars have tow hitch’s wether aftermarket or dealer fitted. It is always funny watching people tow a trailer in a Cruze or a camry

Moving truck story NTA… they offered to comp for gas. That is cash. That’s how we have operated in the past. Fill up our friends truck at the end, which was usually more than what used. And food and drinks for the physical labor. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Man code article 223, "when a friends asks for help you help him", coincides with article 48 when a friend asks to help with moving, pizza and beer are the only acceptable payment, he went a step further and offered you gas. You sir are a bad friend.
    Sincerely, Troy nonya, friendship lawyer

I saw the final story on Reddit, and Rslash missed a good bit - OP asked what the Terms & Conditions of the contract were, and the CB said that you needed to sign the contract before you got to see the Ts&Cs. OP was like "so I have to agree to Ts&Cs before I get to know what they are?!?!? Wtf?!?"
