Glad you like it Les. I hope to do more in the future. Get some good debate going. It would be nice to have some fresh ideas in the world of the ninja.
Antony, you'll love this... there was a historical, 13 episodes anime from 2017, called Onihei based on the novels written by Shōtarō Ikenami. Lots of stuff on Edo period investigation, criminal capture, infiltrators, informants, murders and robberies, especially on the first episode! It illustrated your conclusions really well! keep up the great work!
In the end, its very possible that they would use some type of mask in some situation but what we can say for sure is that they didnt have a "standar ninja mask" they would have... We are sure they would have s fire starter, they would have a kaginawa... They would have all of those things even written down in manuals, and yet there isnt much info about masks...
Love the photo! ...always sets my mind on fire when i see a mask on some Japanese chap the new book is awesome Antony! ...the narration is really good too...i struggle with the reading side ...im still going to buy the book to honour your work, whats the chances of having some of your other works on audible too? X
Clearly this photo is from a massage parlor during a local epidemic. The rubber/masseuse is just being careful with spreading disease. The sword is probably because he’s dealing with late payments. >_>
The amagasa would mean such a mask would not be relevant. The length of such a hat, used by farm hands and other employed people, would conceal the identity well by the shadow it could cause, and by concealing the eyes and all from oeasy view. Also, you could, if you wanted to, carry some sort of cloth under it on your head to prevent sweating and doing other things to your benefit.
If you are interested in Les Conn and his background etc, he was a guest on my podcast which you may watch here: ruclips.net/video/EOJ17iPXHl0/видео.html
Many shinobi traveled in plain sight. Shichi ho- seven ways of going (disguise for lack of a better term). Like master who wrote the shoninki put the same reference- we are not nosobito. Masks May have been employed; but according to texts it wasn’t typically employed. I totally agree with you. Thanks again for your show. Love your teaching and your show ( books included!!!). It definitely puts a different spin on the 80’’s shinobi. Thanks man.
I think both parties involved are reading into the photo way to hard. It may just be a stupid picture with zero relation to anything. The photo shows both men wearing masks and just because someone wrote "robber" at the bottom makes little to no difference. We have no idea of the context in which the photo was taken nor the purpose it was to serve. There isn't enough information to make any kind of educated guess as to what's happening in the photo nor to outline each of the characters in said photo. Just a bunch of assumption's.
If the ninja used that straight blade like in movies ...that means the blade never went through that final quench ( which is when it gets it curve) to harden the steel so it would suck . It wouldn’t stay sharp and it wouldnt be strong it would bend against a harden blade. It would make no sense to skip the final step that takes 1 minute to leave the sword straight. I don’t think that movie style of ninja sword is correct either
Is it possible that the straight sword thing came about because of disguised blades, such as a disguised sword stick? If you were wandering around pretending to be a traveller, monk etc you wouldn't be able to overtly carry a sword of any kind. Also the ninja weapon thing, I know that there are described weapons but surely the ability and mind set to use any item as a weapon would have been important? Another thing comes to mind, just as troops can supplement their gear now, did this happen with ninja. If your creeping around at night and not constrained by social expectations of weapon carrying, could you be carrying a Chinese straight sword you acquired? Being the special forces of their day, were they allowed to use whatever they wanted to get the job done and think about using a sword as a step up to climb a wall, easier with a straight sword? Just a few thoughts.
Do you think the whole confusion is similar to the use of" Special Forces" or "Commando"? The meaning is completely different depending on the source- each country and different services have different specific meanings( and that's often very different than the original), but popular culture has developed it's own generalized meaning. Another thing you mentioned is the rise of Tokugawa Empire- which parallels Post Westphalian statehood in the West- Raiders, Brigands and Rebels adopt the tactics and forms of the older pre-state military and adapt to maintain some effectiveness in the face of overwhelming state power.
Yes, it is all of these small elements put together plus our misunderstanding or more i should say our misconceptions that bring about the problem. I am trying to wipe all misconceptions away.
Damn shame though, because some of those misconceptions, mainly what i consider the big 5: black gi, kuji, shuriken, black masks and shinobi hand-to-hand combat... they’re really cool...
Commando is more common to UK while Special Forces is American. The idea is the same, but not all units have the same training or goals. I ti the same with Woodcraft and bushcraft, both are the same and don't mean bushes vs. trees, it is the same thing but different country lingo. You say Shinobi, I say Spy. lol
Do you remember back in the Facebook days I tracked down a walking sword which is straight nothing to do with Shimon directly but would they choose this style I think so as it's a sword for foot samurai
Hello Anthony, do you know about the Tang dynasty streight sword?, if you research about this topic you will see that in japan they have use that blade before the blade was curved, so if warriors at that time use that sword is not surprise "ninjas" use that too. Maybe everithing is not in scrolls......., Hope you understand my poor english, have a great day and thanks for share your research
13:00. If the robber is the guy standing .why does the victim have a mask on too? If it was a mask I couldn’t really see that clearly. Did they both have masked on?
Surely some may have they did steal enemy plans or perhaps a quick burning of a castle or sabatoge perhaps some other in and out operations would benefit from the use of a mask and perhaps some shinobi where mistaken for nusubito like you basically said they wore what suited the situation/circumstance surely some shinobi did maybe not all but like you said secrecy of identity was valued and some shinobi did revenge attacks as you said and that many dont want some one to know its them surely some did
True! That makes a lot more sense, it's the context in which you need a mask. Of course no one is gonna do that in broad daylight, but at night - absolutely. The ninja had to wear masks when performing assassinations, infiltration etc.
Ninjas came from India through China/Korea; connectting the dots; most islamist use niqab masks too, so that means... Ninjas!! of course, the Persian Assassins Order were all ninjas too!! We didn't notice cuz of the covered faces until now. You guys didn't think we wouldn't figured out, did you crafty ninjas? All so secret... revealed!!
Ok might be abit ranti here. First i thought execution, but then the arms is wrong and the masked man stands to close, so it cant be that unless they couldent get it in to the picture so they would have stood to close to eachother. but the same problem comes if the hooded man is the robber, his to close to pose any "threat" with that sword. or atleast a direct fatal threat. I cant see it like a hero picture in it either where the cloaked man is showing of his capture, but it might be because im westernised. And here in the west if it was a hero picture the hoded man would look straight in to the camera and he wouldent be wearing a mask. Id say the man on the ground is a traveler or drifter as he has the stick with the bag thingy on, and i guess that could be both a robber or a victem. If the hoded man would be a police in a totalitarian regim and this photo is taken in a context where they are warning robbers that there is police here the "traveler" or "robber" wouldent have his arm around the polices arm either, because they would have shown of the power of the police where the robber wouldent dare to touch or retaliate against the police. So as the picture probably is to be proof of an event that is an robbery the hodded man would be the robber, and he has taking down a traveler or drifter. cant be sure though. The whole thing feels like a skimask dilema though, the skimask is a skimask until its used in a robbery then its a robbers mask.

Robbers had masks as they lived in among the family’s they robbed ?

the photo obviously says rubber not robber: one guy gives the other a back rub, he's a professional rubber.
Hahah that would be funny.

But that is how history works, you taker all the evidence and build a picture. That is history 101.

only reason to wear mask for ninja is probebly protection from inhaling working with chemical, dust like substances
Given that Ninja would taste the soil of a road and dig holes to hide in, I doubt dust would be where they'd draw the line.
