Good video. I've actually been thinking about how large carrier aircraft along with AWACs aircraft and some serious escorts (F-22s ) could move into an area and release swarms of remotely piloted drones. A C-17 could have a dozen operators setup at stations controlling the squadron dropped from the specially designed cargo area. These wouldn't even need radar - just a couple of IR missiles and a couple of AMRAAMs in internal bays and a gun. The AWACS could guide and lock them onto targets. The operators could set them to full autonomous mode once they're in theater to avoid coms giving away their positions. Others would be larger and set up for strike missions while afore mentioned take out any air threat. A third type could be even smaller drones with HARMs and possibly a suicide HARM mission built in once their missiles are expended. I'm babbling, but the possibilities are staggering - I won't even get into the idea of space planes since you could theoretically have dozens just sitting in orbit and ready to be "dropped" into action when needed.

I live next to a major Unites States Air Force base with a lot of traffic. I've been watching F-22 Raptors fly over my house for twenty years now. It occured to me while watching this video that still to this day, the majority of people on the planet have never actually seen an F-22 Raptor in person, so I thought I'd share something cool that I've observed about it over the years. Simply put, the aircraft always looks futuristic. It always has, from the first time I saw one in the air in the early 2000s, to the birds above my home today. I can't think of anything else I've ever seen on this planet that has this unique quality. How can something look so futuristic for so long when you see it all the time? I don't know, but that's the F-22. It's amazing, and it's been cool growing up with them overhead. I don't know what is going to come next, but I do know it is going to inspire future generations in the same way the Raptor has inspired me. I can't wait to see one flying by.

5 years ago, the Navy already designed a stealth fighter drone that took off and landed on a carrier...autonomously, which is the holy grail for these aircraft.
That's the X47B and not the Navy's new 6th gen fighter. Ironically, if Navy is following AF lead, these 6th generation stealth fighters will work in tandem with these unmanned aerial combat platforms as multi roll wingmen.

When you said that the F-35 is planned to be operational until the 2070s my initial reaction was "What? There's no way a fighter will be active that long." Then it occurred to me that the F-15 has been in operation for over 50 years now :|
@@Frost640 None of them are 50 and still flying, but some do have a lot of hours on them - and the airframe design is 50 but now has more powerful engines.
Thats kinda sad tbh... they should really just scrap all 1st to 4th gen aircrafts and focus on Modern stuff. Things like F-15's won't do much these days anymore
@@cherrydragon3120 F-15s, 16s and 18s are hardly useless - they're more than a match for MOST other aircraft the world is still operating. The cost to replace them all with modern aircraft would be in the trillions and take years. Besides, strike aircraft are still needed and all 3 of those platforms make excellent attack aircraft and can also be converted to specialty missions such as ECM or Wild Weasel etc.
and how old the f16 is. though 6th gen will probly a multinational project that is super expensive. twin engine, twin pilot, stealth and drone platform
I was working at Harris Corporation in Palm Bay Florida when the F-22 was being designed. An entire floor of a building was dedicated to that aircraft. There were signs and reminders everywhere regarding "size & weight" considerations. It was very cool to be there at that time. Still a remarkable aircraft.
The US Navy already has the first ever unmanned drone that was used as a tanker for a manned US jet and the first unmanned jet drone to land on an aircraft carrier at sea. Both were done autonomously without US pilots operating them. I think the Loyal Wingman concept and NGAD are far more advanced than we know. The Air Force is also already testing all kinds of AI tech on an experimental F-16 that can simulate all kinds of other jets. I think they are teaching the drone to operate and/or fight.

I had always thought the way 6th gen would work was something like a F-15EX accompanying NGAD at a distance to ferry a load of munitions since 5th gen is kind of showing that as an area where it kind of lacks, this idea basically takes that to 11. And I don't know if the US version is going to be the same as the Aussie version but 'absorbing fire' is on the checklist for the RAAF. One of the good things is a lot of the groundwork for loyal wingman has already been laid with the Aussie program.

Potentially they could absorb shots for you aswell or at least confuse incoming missile sensors. You could initiate an incredibly accurate bombing run on a single or multiple targets using data taken from 1 pilot which is then passed onto the wingmen drones.

What happens when you can manufacture a fleet of successively smaller and smaller slave drones whose terminal state is a swarm of miniature suicide drones capable of assassinating individual human targets ? Carrier launches drone. Drone launches drone swarm. Drone swarm launches swarm of even smaller drones. Smaller drones launch tiny, insect sized drones which seek and kill individual targets. What the hell do you need guns and artillery for ? You have a locust level swarm of hunter-killer drones with a payload sufficient to kill one human target. Oh, you're hiding in a trench ? Master Simon, let’s be clear, either Russians, nor the Chinese have a legitimate fifth generation aircraft. Moreover, neither of their so-called fifth generation aircraft have been proven to be legitimately fifth generation. And the existence of minuscule numbers that they can hardly be considered effective at all. On top of that, their pilots are not nearly train well enough to be competitive, with even secondary powers.
It's possible only four companies have ever built a stealth aircraft - Lockheed and Northrup-Grumman for the production planes and drones. Boeing built a prototype and the Japanese may have built a prototype. And that's it. In spite of the Russians having the remains of an F-117 and the Chinese hacking data from the American stealth program they haven't come close.
Science fiction writers have been predicting technological advancements since the 1800's. Before anything resembling something more complicated than steam powered direct drive machinery existed, authors have been envisioning modern day technology like space travel, touch screen and so on. As technology has evolved, the ability to imagine future technology has evolved with it. Nothing exists today, nor will exist in the future that hasn't already long since been dreamed of by a creative mind with a penchant for writing.
The military aircraft used in the beginning of Count Zero by William Gibson, released in 1986, was more advanced than the current envisioning of 6th gen aircraft. And the story implies that it was obsolete surplus at the time of the story plot.
for clarification, as when this was written it was probably correct however is not now, the ‘Future Combat Air System’ (FCAS) is a partnership of Spain-France-Germany, and the the mitsubishi F-X merged and Partnered with Britain and Italy to form the Sixth Gen ‘Global Combat Air Programme’ (GCAP). Europe’s main powers are split over 2 different sixth gen fighter programmes.

The confusion is likely coming from the original British 6th gen program, which is still the overall name for the RAF's future fighter strategy, being called Future Combat Air System (FCAS) as well. As a result, there have been two completely separate programs running in parallel with the exact same name. To avoid this confusion, the Franco-German-Spanish programme is often referred to by it's French acronym - SCAF. Not that that is necessarily needed anymore since the Anglo-Italian-Japanese programme becoming GCAP.

Can only imagine 50 years from now what a squad will look like. Will have soldiers in power armor with a variety of robots, supported by close ground pocket drones, and having these 6th gens lurking overhead somewhere. Drone swarms. just bombard your enemies with wave after wave of massive swarms of small extremely fast and agile kamikaze explosive drones. just so you can imagine what a drone swarm attack on a large town would look like, it would cover every square inch of the town with a constant stream of explosions for like 20 minutes straight. its a kind of warfare that's absolutely terrifying as it very quickly overwhelms any air defense systems and annihilates them into oblivion. besides detonating a thermonuclear bomb within outer space over the battlefield to produce an EMP blast, there's no practical way to defend against massive drone swarm attacks.
@@nickhowatson4745 Except the US is already light years ahead of everyone else in development of Electronic countermeasures. As much as everyone like to believe that drones are completely autonomous, they are not. Jamming their control frequencies is going to make their ability to respond to physical countermeasures a much harder problem. Ukraine used small consumer drones effectively in the beginning of the war. These have become a lot less effective as the both sides learn how to deal with them as this conflict has dragged on. Is it a nice tool to use in certain situations - definitely. Is it a wuderwaffe that will win every conflict to from here to the end of time - hardly.
@@JB-pu8ik The US military is already fielding drones of many different sizes, levels of complexity, and cost. Everything from a 6 inch long black hornet, switchblades that are essentially loitering mortars, all the way up to Reapers and Global Hawks. DARPA is all over this technology and it's counters. They just don't advertise it much. I think any adversary that goes against the US on a modern battlefield is going to get surprised by the amount of information those forces can harvest while denying the same. There is also no near peer that has demonstrated that their Air Force can establish long term air dominance or denial in a conflict. Western Air Forces will likely be able to clear and command the skies in most scenarios within a week.
It would be stealthier and more aerodynamic if the canopy was removed and the cockpit was dropped into the frame. Fly everything by cameras and displays.
The loyal wingman concept is the most game changing. If each can carry an additional 4 to 6 missiles, the targeting/computing system for the F-35 is more than capable of targeting and controlling any or all the missiles at once.
the J20 has an additional pilot to control loyal wingman , and in even far better than any US versoin with 5G/6G , quantum communications, HYPESONIC DRONES (wingman?) ... a pilot full time to do the control .

@@hkfoo3333 the US disclosed that a couple US F-35s already had a stand off with Chinese J-20s, the only thing that got the USAF's attention was the Chinese AWACS plane in the area. In just one brief encounter the US determined that if they take out the AWACS, the J-20 is pretty much useless.

The J20 will have different upgrades and the latest version will put the F35 to shame. Dont believe ? Just wait for time when both meet. I dont see how F35 is even a match for the J20 with so many features inferior to the J20 . Believe me, F35 is useless when faced vs the J20 . Shorter range, Much slower shorter range missiles. 1 pilot only. 1000 still unfinished problems... Peer to peer .. with other planes , data communications , etc. Maybe you tell me ONE AREA F35 has that can beat the J20 as J20 can not only take on F35 head on , but can take on the AWACs far behind , and with second pilots will be able to control so many things leaving the pilot of fly ...
It's more like a race (like the Space Race was in its era). Most of present wars are asymetrical. Billion dollars stealth drones against farmers and goat f.ckers fighting with sticks and stones in Africa or Afghanistan is totally overkill, I'd say. But NATO countries always have the desire to show Russians and Chinese "who has the biggest d!ck". It's always political, one way or an other... (sorry, I hope my english isn't crap).
They're just having been major wars for the fifth generation fighters to be used in. We also don't really know if the chinese ones work at all and they basically just stole tech from the f35
With all the advancements in drone warfare capabilities and artificial intelligence, we might be looking at the end of manned aircraft soon? With drones and AI aircraft, you can load up more ordinance and not deal with S& R risks if a drone is destroyed.
Northrop Grumman already dropped out of the program but will be a sub contractor to the winning company. With all the screwups at Boeing, their failed tankers and reusable space craft,etc LM will most likely get the contract.
I'd like to suggest you look into the Inch Pipelines, Big Inch and Little Big Inch, of World War 2. Before the war, petroleum from Texas went to the Northeastern US via oil tankers. When America entered the war, German u-boats launched Operation Drumbeat along the American east coast, attacking merchant shipping and Allied warships. To secure oil supplies to the Northeast, Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes called for a pipeline project to transport petroleum by a more secure interior route immune to German interception. Built over the course of two years, Big Inch and Little Big Inch were built over 1,254 and 1,475 miles respectively, each with 35 pumping stations along their routes, from Texas to New Jersey, the longest, biggest and heaviest project of its type then undertaken. It required 16,000 people and 658,000 tons of materials and was built in coordination between the US government and a consortium of the largest American oil companies, becoming a major point of US government wartime propaganda.
I remember getting Wheels and Wings monthly subscription model kit when I was a kid of about 10 years old which included a card for the FY-22 Interceptor which is the basis of the 5th gen fighters America has now. I'm 45 years old at the time of this posting... DARPA is always minimum 20 years ahead of what we are aware of.
Watch, 7th generation aircraft will be super maneuverable in close-in dogfights with guns (or lasers), because every aircraft is now so stealthy that you can't pick them up and shoot them down with missiles at range.
There is a trade off between stealth and maneuverability when it comes to the shape of a plane, any plane that leans into maneuverability would be less stealthy. Unless they come up with a way to change the plane's shape in mid flight (which would admittedly be a crazy level of high-tech) I think they'd probably try to come up with a new way to target enemies from a distance, and possibly make it capable of limited space flight.
It's a battle of your sensors vs their stealth against your stealth vs their sensors. For instance, from the RCS we know of, the SU-57 and J-20 aren't remotely as stealthy as any US stealth craft - fighter or bomber. But the US planes also have better radar too.
Judging by recent tests it would appear that a hypersonic fighter is unrealistic but a hypersonic AI drone wing man capable of 30 G's and loaded with weapons is probable. The US is not the only country making AI hunter drones either. Russia just tested out its loitering hunter over Ukraine and we can't pick it up on radar.
I want it to look like some sort of F-15 Stealth Eagle, with internal bays only for AAMs. It relies entirely upon "loyal wingman" drones for bombs and other ground attack weapons. In other words, "not a pound for air to ground."
People who think the 6th gen fighter jet would look like the simulated/cartoon here, 0:27, haven't seriously followed the evolution if fighter jets. They're into console games and other cartoon CGIs: There is a reason why ALL fighter jets ---- from the first one (the Nazi/German Messerschmitt Me-262)..... to the current, high-end 4th and 5th gen kinds like F-22, F-35, Su-35/Su-57, Typhoon/Eurofighter, Rafale, Super Hornet, Changdo J-20, Shenyang FC-31, etc. ---- have the TAIL-END designs they do: #1: it's either two vertical stabilizers like the SR-71, F-14, F-15, Super Hornet, the Su-35/Su-57, J-20, FC-31, F-22, F-35... Or #2: those with a slightly larger, single vertical stabilizer like the Rafael, the Typhoon/Eurofighter, the F-16, the Gripen, etc. Each second that goes by, when a fighter jet is flying say, at Mach 2 or so, ~30,000ft in altitude ... the air molecules passing through EACH SQUARE INCH of the area of its VERTICAL STABILIZER(S)... is roughly 40,000 psi. If you don't have a need for such a BIG, ROBUST STABILIZING PHYSICAL STRUCTURE, you are NOT going to put it/them there. The REASON fighter jets have THAT CONTRAPTION is not for their beautiful aesthetics; the reason is that fighter jets have an ENDLESS NEED to make very fast, very big/dangerous "instantaneous" SHARP TURNS. Our aircraft are not ANTI-GRAVITY machines ---- like those the US Navy recorded in some of their instruments over the years, from San Diego's Navy training areas off the coast of Coronado/La Jolla to the East Coast, on the Atlantic front. When pilots need to make drastic ANGLE CHANGES, they need those giant & powerful VERTICAL STABILIZERS to physically maneuver those TENS OF THOUSANDS OF POUNDS of air molecules that are passing through EACH SQUARE INCH of those giant structures (even the tilted ones like those on the F-22, Super Hornet, F-35, etc are still VERY VERTICAL). But these CGI cartoon ones shown to purport to be what the US 6th gen fighter jet may look like.... they are more in line with GLIDER AIRCRAFT like the B-2, up coming B-21, and taleless drones. Even tailess drones and "flying wings" like the B-2/B-21 can be MADE to fly very fast. But they are NOT going to be able to make instantaneous, sharp/high-angle turns. That is just the LAW OF PHYSICS and ENGINEERING we are currently stuck with, as a species.... We again are not Aliens from Andromeda, with anti-gravitational aircraft.... (..... For those interested but who haven't thought it through, because they confuse CGIs for real fighter jets...... the ENERGY needed to fit "puffing" air-ducts ---- controlled by, say, super computers --- to "fight" against those 40,000+ PSI force.... so you could pull very high G's... would be beyond what any fighter jet could muster.... So that is NOT the direction we are going with....) Again, flying a fighter jet at Mach 2, around 25,000 to 30,000ft and pulling 5 to 9-G's on it...... is NOT the same thing as docking a Space Shuttle or Elon's Space X... at the International Space Station... with tiny "puffing" jet streams, to slowly maneuver the space-craft to be align with doorways at the Space Station... IN OTHER WORDS, you either have the F-22/F-35/Rafale/Typhoon/Su-35/Su-57/SR-71/FC-31 design.... OR.... you have something like a greatly MODIFIED YF-23 design.... OR you have the B-2/B-21 design... and this third option is a GLIDER. Whether it goes really fast or really slow, it a GLIDER CANNOT make sharp angle turns! Again, all these Cartoon CGIs on these RUclips videos are GLIDERS, not real usable fighter jets that could pull erratic 9-G's and be able to go on... If you flew the up-coming & smaller & faster B-21 at, say, Mach 1 and you tried to make a sharp angle turn --- it's computer WOULDNT ALLOW IT but let's say you put in on a "manual mode" and tried it ---- it WILL GO DOWN instantly! Winged bombers --- designed without vertical stabilizing contraptions --- are NOT ENGINEERED for sharp angle turns (again, whether you fly it at 345MPH or 900MPH; you should NOT try to make sharp angle turns).... BTW, one of the reasons why the Pentagon picked the MORE TRADITIONAL YF-22 over the more "futuristic" DIAMOND-SHAPED (parallelogram) YF-23 prototype... was indeed due to its more futuristic and "unproven" wing and tail designs. With the YF-23 also being some 6 feet longer, and with so many more "unproven" designs (such as the cooling technologies to disperse hot air coming out of the YF-23's exhausts).... the YF-23 would have cost, on a per unit basis, TENS OF MILLIONS of dollars more. And one of the REASONS why the units of the F-22 dropped form 500 units to 250 unites to finally 189 at the end.... was that it was costing between $300M to $500 per unit... NOT the "Oh, it's only $130M" as some silly folks have been saying.... If the F-22 had only "cost just $130M" --- or roughly the cost of a current F-35B ---- the US Pentagon would have allowed the US Air Force to order up to 250 or more units... before the program was terminated. But between $300M - $500M a unit, or roughly 1/4 of the prize of the B-2, even the US couldn't have afforded to buy & maintain more than 150 to 180 or so units...
Calling the Russian and Chinese fifth generation fighters in the same breath as the US’s is like saying that a Tesla and a Chevy impala are both cars. Yeah, they’re both cars but vastly different.
I think it's pretty awesome that we're even still making the F-16s for a country not looking to buy anything stealthy or can't. The F-16v is the version I'm talking about, Lockheed Martin took over the General Dynamics manufacturing and started making them in block 70/72 versions. it seemed they were only going to make the upgrades but ended up getting orders from customers, so they're continuing with it. I think it's smart for those who want an updated version but don't need huge numbers of them. Hopefully, they'll continue to keep them in the skies for a very, very long time, I absolutely *love* the F-22 but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the F-16 either, just ours are getting old haha.

By the way, the US Military doesn’t work in a one gen atmosphere. If they are working on the 6th gen (which a demonstrator has been said to have flown) you can be 100% sure that a 7th is on the drawing board…exotic materials still needed
My impression of the ngad program is to deliver an evolving platform that will support a wide variety of weapons systems. The platform will network the battlefield from a protected position that will aid against detection: a high and distant position that will outpace the range of other launched weapons. Expect each platform to support a constantly modified drone chassis and new chassis that will support stock components. Expect these drones to operate with Ai advanced tactics that would be impossible for a human body to survive within. Expect that the main command platform to operate as a command point that will carry and launch specific drone configurations. These ngad platforms will launch from within the mainland of the United States. The range of these platforms will be assisted to their destination. The destination will be just outside of s target's range of detection and or retaliation or defensive measures. Drones will launch from here either from the ngad command platform or from other assisting Stealth capable drones. The ngad platform will gather and distribute intel in real time. Platforms and drones will be in constant evolution. The iteration of each evolution will be dictated by the geopolitics and financial efficiencies required. The NGAD program I expect to be not of a singular aircraft design, but rather the implementation of a new philosophy that will accelerate the bleeding edge of aviation combat to be fielded much more quickly. Example, coordination of the manufacturing process to correct for errors within a single iteration of design. Think czinger 21C meets the army's future combat system meets industrialization preparedness. Amd all aviation research programs can contribute on all levels to the evolution of the ngad Program. Think like game developers or open source design. So each craft during a non-war period may be more of a test bed for technolog and software. And each iteration may consist of one individual platform. While during war these platforms can be slapped together using stocked parts and factories around the country to produce dozens or more of the necessary craft within a month or less. I.e: Closely coordinated production on demand to meet demands.
With un-manned drones they could handle maneuvers that human bodies can`t handle like excessive g`s.These could be connected with passive sensors and controls that might avoid jamming.Deterrence can stop wars before they get started.All this high tech is great if whoever wields it are honest and honorable.

I think 6th generation should not be so much "a" plane but a set of aerial vehicles, manned and unmanned, with different primary tasks working together. Intelligence gathering, close air support, bomb and air to air weapons delivery, loitering ammunition, electronic warfare, drones with varying roles, missles. Where there is a synergy in the development and later maintenance of the different planes, by using the same engines, materials, electronics, construction processes etc. Maybe even have the planes convertible from one primary role to another.

It’s wild the tech the Americans are building. I was watching some videos on the F22 and the F35 from this channel the other day, and the Indian guy I work with who has a Russian girlfriend and she’s convinced him that Russia is telling the truth and australia is lying. He piped up and said that Russia definitely has planes that compare to the F22. I simply asked well where is it. He decided they obviously weren’t using it because it’s top secret. That was the US successfully conducting military operations half away across the world. The failures were not military, but political. Russia on the other hand can't exert air dominance in a space literally right next door. If they had the number of Felons that they were confident could wipe out the Ukrainian Air Force, why are they not using them? Why are Russian cities suddenly becoming the targets of drone strikes? I don't believe manned aircraft will be in the future of military resources. I'm thinking likely more along the lines of massive numbers of inexpensive drones controlled by computer programs. They'd be really difficult to defend against.
You'd be surprised at how a computer will fall into a fix pattern, make defending against a computer only attack more easy that you think......however, add in a little bit of Human Brilliance/Madness and that make it much harder to predict. I think you are right about the swarm of attack drones, but i do think that there will be a human adding unpredictability in the mix for a long time yet
It's amazing the F-22 is still so dominant given the platforms age...just goes to show how far ahead of everyone the US MIC is. 6th gen fighters are easy to define in broad terms...they will have enhanced super cruise of mach 2.75 +, enhanced stealth well beyond even the Raptor, improved radar and IR capabilities, improved radar suppression tech, utilize the most advanced missiles of today & tomorrow as well, improved networking capabilities beyond the F-35, and an easily upgraded architecture ensuring lengthy platform life.
before you say that the USAF and the USN will have the same aircraft just look at the F35A and the F35C. while they have similar shapes their size are different, their landing gear is different, they also have different load out of missiles and bombs and some of the electronics and software are believed to be different because of the different operating environments.

The F-22 really was a marvel of engineering for its time. Our phones are way more powerful than any simulation workbenches they had back in that time and they still somehow designed that plane. I always feel inadequate as an modern engineer when I look at the problems people before me have solved with basically a couple of rocks, a twig and a slide rule as tools lol
And the big problem is that China is likely already reading the documents on NGAD in real time b/c the US is so bad at protecting it's classified designs.

Actually NGAD is ideal for dogfighting as bullets are much cheaper than missles and not limited by G’s (assuming its a manless drone) which means it can outturn and outmaneuver any manned jet and essentially kill a $100 million dollar enemy aircraft with as little as 5-10 strategically placed cannon shells at minimal cost. What we see with 5th gen like the F22 is that after they use up the few missiles they have they can only dogfight or run away. Assuming the enemy can increasingly avoid those via tech and experience it leads them back to dogfighting to win. As with Ukraine and Russia rapidly burning through millions of dollars of weapons being blocked by the opposition… it is actually the cost effective drones that are winning the war more than the $100 million dollar aircraft.
The 6th Gen will Not be a dogfighting machine. America has been moving away from the dogfight ever since the F22. New Fighter jet will most likely keep up with Stealth tecnology, I cant imagine a fighter built around stealth mindset to include dog fighting. Also many speculate that the 6th gen is going to be able to hyper sonic at high altitudes (80k ft) Which will require a diffrent type of frame that would not support dogfighting role. So it makes more sense for a Extremely High flying, Hyper Sonic, Stealth Jet with long ranger hyper sonic missle capablilites. Today's midset is to Kill before they even knew you were there.

With fighter aircraft getting more and more stealthy to the point where some are nearly invisible on radar. With enough detail to target. Head to head combat and dog fighting is the only real way without lofting ( firing high and fast for extra range) missiles and waiting for them to pitbull ( aquire its own target) by sending in a drone with the same stealthy composite it doesn't matter if it's targeted as there is no one on board so can be sent out as essentially a disposable carrier for the missiles. It is also worth noting as you have in another video that ir has come a long way at now 20 miles ish. It's also worth mentioning that hypersonic aircraft or missiles will generate more drag and therfore more heat so thermal may be more useful in the changing wars.

Lockheed may have produced both of America's 5th Generation fighters but Northrop has developed the world's first and only 6 generation aircraft the B21 raider.
I would imagine it was fairly easy to choose Northrup for the B-21, considering everything the Air Force was looking for requirement-wise, Northrup already had so much parallel experience with from designing and manufacturing the B-2 lol.

Who knows what stage of development that they are in. Also the F22 raptor is being used as a test bed for a lot of sixth gen technologies making it now having some prototypes that are 5.5 gen. Good video. I've actually been thinking about how large carrier aircraft along with AWACs aircraft and some serious escorts (F-22s ) could move into an area and release swarms of remotely piloted drones. A C-17 could have a dozen operators setup at stations controlling the squadron dropped from the specially designed cargo area. These wouldn't even need radar - just a couple of IR missiles and a couple of AMRAAMs in internal bays and a gun. The AWACS could guide and lock them onto targets. The operators could set them to full autonomous mode once they're in theater to avoid coms giving away their positions. Others would be larger and set up for strike missions while afore mentioned take out any air threat. A third type could be even smaller drones with HARMs and possibly a suicide HARM mission built in once their missiles are expended. I'm babbling, but the possibilities are staggering - I won't even get into the idea of space planes since you could theoretically have dozens just sitting in orbit and ready to be "dropped" into action when needed.

I live next to a major Unites States Air Force base with a lot of traffic. I've been watching F-22 Raptors fly over my house for twenty years now. It occured to me while watching this video that still to this day, the majority of people on the planet have never actually seen an F-22 Raptor in person, so I thought I'd share something cool that I've observed about it over the years.
Simply put, the aircraft always looks futuristic. It always has, from the first time I saw one in the air in the early 2000s, to the birds above my home today. I can't think of anything else I've ever seen on this planet that has this unique quality. How can something look so futuristic for so long when you see it all the time? I don't know, but that's the F-22. It's amazing, and it's been cool growing up with them overhead.
I don't know what is going to come next, but I do know it is going to inspire future generations in the same way the Raptor has inspired me. I can't wait to see one flying by.

5 years ago, the Navy already designed a stealth fighter drone that took off and landed on a carrier...autonomously, which is the holy grail for these aircraft.
Then autonomous fighter escorts sound feasible.
That's the X47B and not the Navy's new 6th gen fighter. Ironically, if Navy is following AF lead, these 6th generation stealth fighters will work in tandem with these unmanned aerial combat platforms as multi roll wingmen.

When you said that the F-35 is planned to be operational until the 2070s my initial reaction was "What? There's no way a fighter will be active that long." Then it occurred to me that the F-15 has been in operation for over 50 years now :|

@@cherrydragon3120 F-15s, 16s and 18s are hardly useless - they're more than a match for MOST other aircraft the world is still operating. The cost to replace them all with modern aircraft would be in the trillions and take years. Besides, strike aircraft are still needed and all 3 of those platforms make excellent attack aircraft and can also be converted to specialty missions such as ECM or Wild Weasel etc.
It's easy to forget how old the F-22 is.

I was working at Harris Corporation in Palm Bay Florida when the F-22 was being designed. An entire floor of a building was dedicated to that aircraft. There were signs and reminders everywhere regarding "size & weight" considerations. It was very cool to be there at that time. Still a remarkable aircraft.

The US Navy already has the first ever unmanned drone that was used as a tanker for a manned US jet and the first unmanned jet drone to land on an aircraft carrier at sea. Both were done autonomously without US pilots operating them. I think the Loyal Wingman concept and NGAD are far more advanced than we know. The Air Force is also already testing all kinds of AI tech on an experimental F-16 that can simulate all kinds of other jets. I think they are teaching the drone to operate and/or fight.
The CCA Loyal Wing Man sounds fucking awesome. ‘Your heart is beating out of control as missile is speeding toward you and all of a sudden your loyal wingman says, “It’s been on honor” while giving you it’s final solute. Then it takes the hit...' -- I hope it’s that cool.

I had always thought the way 6th gen would work was something like a F-15EX accompanying NGAD at a distance to ferry a load of munitions since 5th gen is kind of showing that as an area where it kind of lacks, this idea basically takes that to 11. And I don't know if the US version is going to be the same as the Aussie version but 'absorbing fire' is on the checklist for the RAAF. One of the good things is a lot of the groundwork for loyal wingman has already been laid with the Aussie program.

The loyal wingman could be like sending your guard dogs in to "pacify" the enemy, so that you can show up and finish them off.
Potentially they could absorb shots for you aswell or at least confuse incoming missile sensors. You could initiate an incredibly accurate bombing run on a single or multiple targets using data taken from 1 pilot which is then passed onto the wingmen drones.

Moreover, neither of their so-called fifth generation aircraft have been proven to be legitimately fifth generation. And the existence of minuscule numbers that they can hardly be considered effective at all. On top of that, their pilots are not nearly train well enough to be competitive, with even secondary powers.

It's possible only four companies have ever built a stealth aircraft - Lockheed and Northrup-Grumman for the production planes and drones. Boeing built a prototype and the Japanese may have built a prototype.
And that's it. In spite of the Russians having the remains of an F-117 and the Chinese hacking data from the American stealth program they haven't come close.

The military aircraft used in the beginning of Count Zero by William Gibson, released in 1986, was more advanced than the current envisioning of 6th gen aircraft. And the story implies that it was obsolete surplus at the time of the story plot.
for clarification, as when this was written it was probably correct however is not now, the ‘Future Combat Air System’ (FCAS) is a partnership of Spain-France-Germany, and the the mitsubishi F-X merged and Partnered with Britain and Italy to form the Sixth Gen ‘Global Combat Air Programme’ (GCAP). Europe’s main powers are split over 2 different sixth gen fighter programmes.
Britain and Italy broke off years ago. I don't think this could have been written back then.

The confusion is likely coming from the original British 6th gen program, which is still the overall name for the RAF's future fighter strategy, being called Future Combat Air System (FCAS) as well. As a result, there have been two completely separate programs running in parallel with the exact same name.
To avoid this confusion, the Franco-German-Spanish programme is often referred to by it's French acronym - SCAF. Not that that is necessarily needed anymore since the Anglo-Italian-Japanese programme becoming GCAP.

Drone swarms. just bombard your enemies with wave after wave of massive swarms of small extremely fast and agile kamikaze explosive drones. just so you can imagine what a drone swarm attack on a large town would look like, it would cover every square inch of the town with a constant stream of explosions for like 20 minutes straight. its a kind of warfare that's absolutely terrifying as it very quickly overwhelms any air defense systems and annihilates them into oblivion. besides detonating a thermonuclear bomb within outer space over the battlefield to produce an EMP blast, there's no practical way to defend against massive drone swarm attacks.

As much as everyone like to believe that drones are completely autonomous, they are not. Jamming their control frequencies is going to make their ability to respond to physical countermeasures a much harder problem. Ukraine used small consumer drones effectively in the beginning of the war. These have become a lot less effective as the both sides learn how to deal with them as this conflict has dragged on. Is it a nice tool to use in certain situations - definitely. Is it a wuderwaffe that will win every conflict to from here to the end of time - hardly.

Everything from a 6 inch long black hornet, switchblades that are essentially loitering mortars, all the way up to Reapers and Global Hawks. DARPA is all over this technology and it's counters. They just don't advertise it much. I think any adversary that goes against the US on a modern battlefield is going to get surprised by the amount of information those forces can harvest while denying the same. There is also no near peer that has demonstrated that their Air Force can establish long term air dominance or denial in a conflict. Western Air Forces will likely be able to clear and command the skies in most scenarios within a week.
It would be stealthier and more aerodynamic if the canopy was removed and the cockpit was dropped into the frame. Fly everything by cameras and displays.

The loyal wingman concept is the most game changing. If each can carry an additional 4 to 6 missiles, the targeting/computing system for the F-35 is more than capable of targeting and controlling any or all the missiles at once.

@@hkfoo3333 the US disclosed that a couple US F-35s already had a stand off with Chinese J-20s, the only thing that got the USAF's attention was the Chinese AWACS plane in the area. In just one brief encounter the US determined that if they take out the AWACS, the J-20 is pretty much useless.

It's more like a race (like the Space Race was in its era). Most of present wars are asymetrical. Billion dollars stealth drones against farmers and goat f.ckers fighting with sticks and stones in Africa or Afghanistan is totally overkill, I'd say. With all the advancements in drone warfare capabilities and artificial intelligence, we might be looking at the end of manned aircraft soon? With drones and AI aircraft, you can load up more ordinance and not deal with S& R risks if a drone is destroyed.

I'd like to suggest you look into the Inch Pipelines, Big Inch and Little Big Inch, of World War 2. Before the war, petroleum from Texas went to the Northeastern US via oil tankers. When America entered the war, German u-boats launched Operation Drumbeat along the American east coast, attacking merchant shipping and Allied warships. There is a trade off between stealth and maneuverability when it comes to the shape of a plane, any plane that leans into maneuverability would be less stealthy. Unless they come up with a way to change the plane's shape in mid flight (which would admittedly be a crazy level of high-tech) I think they'd probably try to come up with a new way to target enemies from a distance, and possibly make it capable of limited space flight.

It's a battle of your sensors vs their stealth against your stealth vs their sensors.
For instance, from the RCS we know of, the SU-57 and J-20 aren't remotely as stealthy as any US stealth craft - fighter or bomber. But the US planes also have better radar too.
Judging by recent tests it would appear that a hypersonic fighter is unrealistic but a hypersonic AI drone wing man capable of 30 G's and loaded with weapons is probable.
The US is not the only country making AI hunter drones either. Russia just tested out its loitering hunter over Ukraine and we can't pick it up on radar.
It will be funny when the NGAD airframe makes its debut and it looks like a YF-23 😂
I want it to look like some sort of F-15 Stealth Eagle, with internal bays only for AAMs. It relies entirely upon "loyal wingman" drones for bombs and other ground attack weapons.

There is a reason why ALL fighter jets ---- from the first one (the Nazi/German Messerschmitt Me-262)..... to the current, high-end 4th and 5th gen kinds like F-22, F-35, Su-35/Su-57, Typhoon/Eurofighter, Rafale, Super Hornet, Changdo J-20, Shenyang FC-31, etc. ---- have the TAIL-END designs they do:
#1: it's either two vertical stabilizers like the SR-71, F-14, F-15, Super Hornet, the Su-35/Su-57, J-20, FC-31, F-22, F-35... Or
#2: those with a slightly larger, single vertical stabilizer like the Rafael, the Typhoon/Eurofighter, the F-16, the Gripen, etc.
Each second that goes by, when a fighter jet is flying say, at Mach 2 or so, ~30,000ft in altitude ... the air molecules passing through EACH SQUARE INCH of the area of its VERTICAL STABILIZER(S)... is roughly 40,000 psi.
If you don't have a need for such a BIG, ROBUST STABILIZING PHYSICAL STRUCTURE, you are NOT going to put it/them there.
The REASON fighter jets have THAT CONTRAPTION is not for their beautiful aesthetics; the reason is that fighter jets have an ENDLESS NEED to make very fast, very big/dangerous "instantaneous" SHARP TURNS.
Our aircraft are not ANTI-GRAVITY machines ---- like those the US Navy recorded in some of their instruments over the years, from San Diego's Navy training areas off the coast of Coronado/La Jolla to the East Coast, on the Atlantic front.
When pilots need to make drastic ANGLE CHANGES, they need those giant & powerful VERTICAL STABILIZERS to physically maneuver those TENS OF THOUSANDS OF POUNDS of air molecules that are passing through EACH SQUARE INCH of those giant structures (even the tilted ones like those on the F-22, Super Hornet, F-35, etc are still VERY VERTICAL).
But these CGI cartoon ones shown to purport to be what the US 6th gen fighter jet may look like.... they are more in line with GLIDER AIRCRAFT like the B-2, up coming B-21, and taleless drones.
Even tailess drones and "flying wings" like the B-2/B-21 can be MADE to fly very fast.
But they are NOT going to be able to make instantaneous, sharp/high-angle turns.
That is just the LAW OF PHYSICS and ENGINEERING we are currently stuck with, as a species.... We again are not Aliens from Andromeda, with anti-gravitational aircraft....
(..... For those interested but who haven't thought it through, because they confuse CGIs for real fighter jets...... the ENERGY needed to fit "puffing" air-ducts ---- controlled by, say, super computers --- to "fight" against those 40,000+ PSI force.... so you could pull very high G's... would be beyond what any fighter jet could muster.... So that is NOT the direction we are going with....)
Again, flying a fighter jet at Mach 2, around 25,000 to 30,000ft and pulling 5 to 9-G's on it...... is NOT the same thing as docking a Space Shuttle or Elon's Space X... at the International Space Station... with tiny "puffing" jet streams, to slowly maneuver the space-craft to be align with doorways at the Space Station...
IN OTHER WORDS, you either have the F-22/F-35/Rafale/Typhoon/Su-35/Su-57/SR-71/FC-31 design....
OR.... you have something like a greatly MODIFIED YF-23 design....
OR you have the B-2/B-21 design... and this third option is a GLIDER.
Whether it goes really fast or really slow, it a GLIDER CANNOT make sharp angle turns! Again, all these Cartoon CGIs on these RUclips videos are GLIDERS, not real usable fighter jets that could pull erratic 9-G's and be able to go on...
If you flew the up-coming & smaller & faster B-21 at, say, Mach 1 and you tried to make a sharp angle turn --- it's computer WOULDNT ALLOW IT but let's say you put in on a "manual mode" and tried it ---- it WILL GO DOWN instantly!
Winged bombers --- designed without vertical stabilizing contraptions --- are NOT ENGINEERED for sharp angle turns (again, whether you fly it at 345MPH or 900MPH; you should NOT try to make sharp angle turns)....
BTW, one of the reasons why the Pentagon picked the MORE TRADITIONAL YF-22 over the more "futuristic" DIAMOND-SHAPED (parallelogram) YF-23 prototype... was indeed due to its more futuristic and "unproven" wing and tail designs.
With the YF-23 also being some 6 feet longer, and with so many more "unproven" designs (such as the cooling technologies to disperse hot air coming out of the YF-23's exhausts).... the YF-23 would have cost, on a per unit basis, TENS OF MILLIONS of dollars more.
And one of the REASONS why the units of the F-22 dropped form 500 units to 250 unites to finally 189 at the end.... was that it was costing between $300M to $500 per unit... NOT the "Oh, it's only $130M" as some silly folks have been saying....
If the F-22 had only "cost just $130M" --- or roughly the cost of a current F-35B ---- the US Pentagon would have allowed the US Air Force to order up to 250 or more units... before the program was terminated.
But between $300M - $500M a unit, or roughly 1/4 of the prize of the B-2, even the US couldn't have afforded to buy & maintain more than 150 to 180 or so units...

Calling the Russian and Chinese fifth generation fighters in the same breath as the US’s is like saying that a Tesla and a Chevy impala are both cars. Yeah, they’re both cars but vastly different.
I think it's pretty awesome that we're even still making the F-16s for a country not looking to buy anything stealthy or can't.
The F-16v is the version I'm talking about, Lockheed Martin took over the General Dynamics manufacturing and started making them in block 70/72 versions. it seemed they were only going to make the upgrades but ended up getting orders from customers, so they're continuing with it. I think it's smart for those who want an updated version but don't need huge numbers of them. Hopefully, they'll continue to keep them in the skies for a very, very long time, I absolutely *love* the F-22 but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the F-16 either, just ours are getting old haha.
The F22 has been in service since 2005 and it’s first flight was in 1997. It’s still the most advanced aircraft in existence.
It's the most dangerous, I think the F-35 is the most "advanced" in most areas, but point taken.

My impression of the ngad program is to deliver an evolving platform that will support a wide variety of weapons systems.
The platform will network the battlefield from a protected position that will aid against detection: a high and distant position that will outpace the range of other launched weapons.
Expect each platform to support a constantly modified drone chassis and new chassis that will support stock components.
Expect these drones to operate with Ai advanced tactics that would be impossible for a human body to survive within.
Expect that the main command platform to operate as a command point that will carry and launch specific drone configurations.
These ngad platforms will launch from within the mainland of the United States.
The range of these platforms will be assisted to their destination.
The destination will be just outside of s target's range of detection and or retaliation or defensive measures.
Drones will launch from here either from the ngad command platform or from other assisting Stealth capable drones.
The ngad platform will gather and distribute intel in real time.
Platforms and drones will be in constant evolution. The iteration of each evolution will be dictated by the geopolitics and financial efficiencies required.
The NGAD program I expect to be not of a singular aircraft design, but rather the implementation of a new philosophy that will accelerate the bleeding edge of aviation combat to be fielded much more quickly. Example, coordination of the manufacturing process to correct for errors within a single iteration of design. Think czinger 21C meets the army's future combat system meets industrialization preparedness. Amd all aviation research programs can contribute on all levels to the evolution of the ngad Program. Think like game developers or open source design.
So each craft during a non-war period may be more of a test bed for technolog and software. And each iteration may consist of one individual platform. While during war these platforms can be slapped together using stocked parts and factories around the country to produce dozens or more of the necessary craft within a month or less. I.e: Closely coordinated production on demand to meet demands.
Ultimately the strategy of the NGAD program will be to drain the economies of the target. Think of the 1980s space race.

I think 6th generation should not be so much "a" plane but a set of aerial vehicles, manned and unmanned, with different primary tasks working together. Intelligence gathering, close air support, bomb and air to air weapons delivery, loitering ammunition, electronic warfare, drones with varying roles, missles. Where there is a synergy in the development and later maintenance of the different planes, by using the same engines, materials, electronics, construction processes etc. Maybe even have the planes convertible from one primary role to another.
France, Germany and Spain in the Tempest project? Or Britain, Japan, Italy and Sweden in the FCAS programme?

@@pashapasovski5860 The US is not in a war that requires overmatching an near peer opponent. F-15s, -16s, and -18s and B-52s were overkill to operate in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. That was the US successfully conducting military operations half away across the world. The failures were not military, but political. Russia on the other hand can't exert air dominance in a space literally right next door. If they had the number of Felons that they were confident could wipe out the Ukrainian Air Force, why are they not using them? Why are Russian cities suddenly becoming the targets of drone strikes? Russia's capability is a massive overstatement.

I don't believe manned aircraft will be in the future of military resources. I'm thinking likely more along the lines of massive numbers of inexpensive drones controlled by computer programs. They'd be really difficult to defend against.
You'd be surprised at how a computer will fall into a fix pattern, make defending against a computer only attack more easy that you think......however, add in a little bit of Human Brilliance/Madness and that make it much harder to predict.
I think you are right about the swarm of attack drones, but i do think that there will be a human adding unpredictability in the mix for a long time yet

It's amazing the F-22 is still so dominant given the platforms age...just goes to show how far ahead of everyone the US MIC is. 6th gen fighters are easy to define in broad terms...they will have enhanced super cruise of mach 2.75 +, enhanced stealth well beyond even the Raptor, improved radar and IR capabilities, improved radar suppression tech, utilize the most advanced missiles of today & tomorrow as well, improved networking capabilities beyond the F-35, and an easily upgraded architecture ensuring lengthy platform life.
before you say that the USAF and the USN will have the same aircraft just look at the F35A and the F35C. while they have similar shapes their size are different, their landing gear is different, they also have different load out of missiles and bombs and some of the electronics and software are believed to be different because of the different operating environments.

The F-22 really was a marvel of engineering for its time. Our phones are way more powerful than any simulation workbenches they had back in that time and they still somehow designed that plane. I always feel inadequate as an modern engineer when I look at the problems people before me have solved with basically a couple of rocks, a twig and a slide rule as tools lol
And the big problem is that China is likely already reading the documents on NGAD in real time b/c the US is so bad at protecting it's classified designs.

Actually NGAD is ideal for dogfighting as bullets are much cheaper than missles and not limited by G’s (assuming its a manless drone) which means it can outturn and outmaneuver any manned jet and essentially kill a $100 million dollar enemy aircraft with as little as 5-10 strategically placed cannon shells at minimal cost. What we see with 5th gen like the F22 is that after they use up the few missiles they have they can only dogfight or run away. Assuming the enemy can increasingly avoid those via tech and experience it leads them back to dogfighting to win. As with Ukraine and Russia rapidly burning through millions of dollars of weapons being blocked by the opposition… it is actually the cost effective drones that are winning the war more than the $100 million dollar aircraft.
The 6th Gen will Not be a dogfighting machine. America has been moving away from the dogfight ever since the F22. New Fighter jet will most likely keep up with Stealth tecnology, I cant imagine a fighter built around stealth mindset to include dog fighting. Also many speculate that the 6th gen is going to be able to hyper sonic at high altitudes (80k ft) Which will require a diffrent type of frame that would not support dogfighting role. So it makes more sense for a Extremely High flying, Hyper Sonic, Stealth Jet with long ranger hyper sonic missle capablilites. Today's midset is to Kill before they even knew you were there.

Head to head combat and dog fighting is the only real way without lofting ( firing high and fast for extra range) missiles and waiting for them to pitbull ( aquire its own target) by sending in a drone with the same stealthy composite it doesn't matter if it's targeted as there is no one on board so can be sent out as essentially a disposable carrier for the missiles.
It is also worth noting as you have in another video that ir has come a long way at now 20 miles ish.
It's also worth mentioning that hypersonic aircraft or missiles will generate more drag and therfore more heat so thermal may be more useful in the changing wars.

The drone thing is a basis for bistatic radar to defeat stealth technology.
And allows to be more daring with turning active radar on on the drone without giving away the jet position to passive radars
Lockheed may have produced both of America's 5th Generation fighters but Northrop has developed the world's first and only 6 generation aircraft the B21 raider.
I would imagine it was fairly easy to choose Northrup for the B-21, considering everything the Air Force was looking for requirement-wise, Northrup already had so much parallel experience with from designing and manufacturing the B-2 lol.

@@Istandby666 Well I mean yeah that's kind of what I was talking about because of course the NGAD is being developed as well as F/A-XX for the navy. Who knows what stage of development that they are in. Also the F22 raptor is being used as a test bed for a lot of sixth gen technologies making it now having some prototypes that are 5.5 gen. And the F35 will eventually become 5.5 gen according to the road map. So yeah
