HELP help Please. At the minute mark 10:53 please explain why the 24 is changed to a negative. in the problem = 4 - 12 x 2 + 9 = 4 + (-24) +9 HUH?? thanks for all your videos. This is how most people learn to subtract integers. The answer is the same either way. a - b = a + (-b) Example: 5 - 4 = 5 + (-4) = 1 Let's look at the problem at the starting point you gave of 10:53: 4 - 12 * 2 + 9 Method 1: Change over to addition of the opposite. 4 + (-12) * 2 + 9 = 4 + (-24) + 9 = -20 + 9 = -11 Method 2: Don't change the subtraction operation. 4 - 12 * 2 + 9 = 4 - 24 + 9 = -20 + 9 = -11 As you can see it's the same either way. I would note this is a series of video lessons with practice and it's best to do them in the proper order. Good luck!

Excellent video but I don't understand why the square brackets are needed?
You can use either, when you already have a round pair, the square ones help to keep things straight.
