you GOTTA listen to the audio tree live versions of her songs. absolute masterpieces. Like the og to audiotree live with I Don’t Smoke is an insane difference it’s so much better
On drunk walk home, it really is mitski screaming! Her live ones are even more powerful. From my knowledge, she used to be in a metal band. I can't wait for more reactions, especially to lush and puberty 2
To me the way Mitski plays with song structure, dissonant melodies, and the sometimes awkward phrasing of her lyrics is very intentional and there to communicate emotion. She creates a lot of tension, which makes some of her songs maybe uneasy on a first listen, but the beauty of it is the more you listen the more you can find a new kind of harmony or rhythm within them, a melody or a drum pattern that felt unpleasant becomes satisfying. Her album "Retired from sad, new career in business" does that a lot and it's one of my favorites of hers!
I totally get what you mean!! That's the reason Shame is one of my favourite songs on Retired From Sad, the pure unease and atmosphere it creates with those strings and her incredibly powerful harmonies, and that almost fuzzy, overwhelming crescendo. I absolutely love Retired From Sad, probably my 4th favourite album of hers (although its really hard to rank them because they're all so good)
@@avery31415 Yesss, with the lyrics being so minimal I think a lot of the storytelling in that song happens in the music itself! The fact that it's an actual orchestra that was recorded for this album is very cool
@@soup_for_one I think her use of singing style and instrumentation together is really powerful in a lot of songs, she's able to create such intense moods. One of my favourite examples is in My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars, where this incredibly loud, overwhelming, noisy guitar so perfectly mirrors the desperation and yearning in her voice. The noise makes me feel almost trapped listening to it, which only serves to highlight the song's message about feeling directionless and helpless in life, especially under capitalism ("I don't know how I'm gonna pay rent / I wanna see the whole world"). She's actually so talented, its insane.
I Will is a personal favourite, she essentially wrote a love song with all of the things she wants someone to write for her. I have a tattoo of the scene from the simpsons this album is named after!
Bury Me At Makeout Creek is a story about a girl falling in love for the first time (aka her first love) in late spring/early summer. Then breaking up in late autumn/early winter. Mitski's vocals sound shaky and she doesn't "finish her sentences" right all on purpose to give it an angsty sound like a teenager. She's committing to the bit. "Townie" is before she meets the guy that she claims is her first love. The line "I'm holding my breath with a baseball bat though I don't know what I'm waiting for." means that she waiting for love and she feels ready but doesn't exactly know what to look out for. "First Love/Late Spring" tells you that she met someone she swears is her first love. "Francis Forever" there's a line that says "And autumn comes when you're not yet done with the summer passing by" and what she means by that is she fears the relationship they have might end. "Jobless Monday" is when she finally realizes that the relationship is going nowhere. The lines "He only loves me when there's a means he means to end" and, "Take me out, baby" and, "Doesn't matter where we'll be but please under the light of day" all show that she wants to save the relationship and work things out. "I will" is a song that has everything Mitski's ever wanted to hear from a lover. (I only know that much but please research about Mitski and listen to her music because she really is a lyrical genius. Definitely react to Puberty 2, which is a completely different story and not connected to this one at all. Thank you so much for listening to Mitski.) (Also Bury Me At Makeout Creek is actually a line from the Simpsons!)
i think i will is a song written to her lover that's just saying like stop stressing and worrying and everything and just let me love you and it's desperate message is hidden behind loving and kind lyrics
I also love that you're going through the discography almost backwards. The newer stuff is more polished and easier to get into, and you still get to see how her music has changed over time
yall should REALLYYY watch some of her live stuff especially from this era,, watch Drunk Walk Home-Live at Palisades, youll see a whole different side of her
her songs are definitely weird without pattern but that's why i like them; she's not boxed into a structure. kind of like brockhampton, everyone hated iridescence for being all over the place but that's what makes the music fun + you can tell she hears songs in her head and can bring them to life without being over polished if that makes sense. love your videos! you guys are chill
the thing i like about her music is that she is able to tell stories through poetic words. she uses metaphors and the structure and tone of a song to build a certain story or scenario or a specific feeling or experience that if you understand where its coming from, you start to understand. awkward phrasing and dissonance tend to be intentional from her, and if there is ANYTHING a musician loves, its intentional song writing and composing. A lot of her music are more metaphorical, and the actual lyrics dont mean what they're talking about but rather than feeling or emotions or the scenario you would normally associate with that.
i believe this was my first mitski album so i hold a lot of love for it, it's so beautifully written !!! she's insane to me for songs like francis forever, last words of a shooting star and i dont smoke (which are defo my fav ones)
Been waiting for this reaction/analysis! This is one of my favorite albums of hers, but I didn't mind the critic as I love how you guys keep it real but still in a respectful way.
@@RicoandPrimo this album feels like being young and reckless to me; at the time, my first real infatuation? was this white guy who was a farmhand and who probably didn’t care if i lived or died tbh. this aspect plus the whole concept of “being the cowboy” or reclaiming the traditional perception of the all-american cowboy just solidified my admiration for her there’s something so concise and relatable about her music for me- it was one of the first times that music accurately encapsulated how i felt and things that went on back then
i love every mitski album and i never see people recommending 'retired from sad, new career in business' when one of my favourite tracks (humpty) is on there
i love mitski so much and i'm glad so many people are finding her, i just saw her in Mexico City and i cried so much 😭. not a lot of people talk about her album "Retired from Sad, New Career in Business", probably because it's a lot different from her newer albums, it has more of an orchestral approach and not at all like this album. but it is my personal favorite, might be one of her most personal albums. i also think you should react to "Lush", it was Mitski's debut album, which she wrote and produced in college for an assignment, lots of keyboard. sounds amazing and it has some amazing lyrics. my personal favorite song in the album is "Abbey". you guys should check out Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers, there's lots of different tones throughout the album, very emotional and descriptive lyrics. one of my all time favorite albums!!! phoebe's voice is so gentle and it can really make you cry.
As a longstanding Mitski fan I love the way you two reacted to this. I think this was a more experimental phase for Mitski during her career and like you said her “finding her voice.” Great reaction 👍 Get Mitski on the next video 🙏 😅Awesome commentary. New sub ♥️
I thought you guys would give it a 4-6, I'm surprised. I don't go back to this album anymore but it was my favorite during graduating high school in the pandemic. It brings back bad memories. Can't wait for Puberty 2 it has a lot of my favorites

33:06 the salton sea is a very Interesting place (I don't really remember why but it means smth crazy😂 in the songs context) Also PLEASE listen to the live version of Drunk Walk Home 40:56 this song is written as what she wants someone to sing to her btw❤
The Salton Sea used to be a remarkable beach in California however due to pollution is now one of the most toxic beaches ever with the people living nearby contracting respiration problems like asthma so in it's meaning Mitski will retire herself to toxicity (like the song).
okay next i recommend listening to either puberty 2 or lush (lush was actually a college project), and yeah mistki definitely plays a lot with structure, pitch, and kind of landing in the right places like you guys mentioned, but to me thats the beauty of her music, it makes her songs feel more raw and straight from the heart, although yeah it can be a little cringe on the first listen you do get used to it, love your reactions keep it up guys🙏
Hey, Ive watched this like multiple times, love how you guys analize everhthing, if I had a recommendation for you guys it would definitely be Magdalena Bay, They release short Mini-mixes full of really creative twists and atmospheric turns. The newest one they dropped is my favorite (Volume 3, i think its like 5 or 6 songs)
there isn't a puberty 1 but in my opinion puberty 2 represents your early to mid 20s when you're still trying to figure out your life and everything is so much more serious and that period of your life represents a second puberty when you're still growing and being immature despite being told that you're an adult and need to have your life figured out.
