  • Here's a video about my Infrared Thermometer and how to use it properly. It will not measure temperature through glass. It is measuring the surface temp. of the glass.

    I actually just bought an IR thermometer to check HVAC, and I was watching videos on tips and tricks of using them, when this video popped up. And I keep fish as well so I decided to check it out. Very nice feather fin synodontis, I was glad he came out towards the end so I could see him better.

    Great video, the demo with your hand and the flame in the fish tank says it all. Thanks.

    I actually ordered one off Amazon a while ago. use it very often. Thanks for the info! need a vid on lights, led vs fluorescent ect ect I am debating these right now and you pointing out the heat aspect is another thing to consider. great content.

      I have a playlist on "aquarium lighting". It might have something helpful in it. Check it out.

    Thank you so much!!! After an hour of watching people attempt to review/explain these things, I was starting to go a bit crazy when it came to glass and ice readouts. All theses so-called [high-rated] "reviewers" had no clue - they made assumptions, and most pretended to understand what they were talking about. But you showed proof! So now I'm ready to invest $15 on one of these things. Thanks for being a great teacher/reviewer.

    You are getting the glass surface temperature, but it does give indication what the water temperature is, because the glass and water will be at same temp.

    • @dlmccallie93
      @dlmccallie93 2 года назад

      Not always, it would be taking from glass where one side is whatever his house temp is and the other side being the water temp.

    I notice my infrared shows the temperature is a couple of degrees higher than the one inside the tank, is it likely the infrared is the more accurate of the two?

  • @thenewfire
    @thenewfire 5 лет назад +1

    It'd be cool to see you get an infrared thermometer with a lower spectral range and see you test it. It should transmit IR through the glass and you'll be able to read an object (most likely metal or ceramic) inside glass. A spectral response under 3um.

    If infra red heat doesn't go through glass then why do you feel warmth when you stand in front of a sunny sindow? open the lid and test the water surface temp to get an accurate reading.

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  7 лет назад +3

      The sunlight passes through, but the "heat" is on you, not in the air. If I shone a light through the tank, the spot on the other side would heat up, but the glass wouldn't.

      Shaden0040 Emissivity! Look it up . IR Thermometers Only INFER the Average Temperature over a SURFACE AREA. The ANGLE REFLECTIVITY DISTANCE AREA AND INTERVENING MEDIUM eg atmosphere ie air ALL AFFECT the inference. Most handhelds assume Emissivity of 0.95 .this can be adjusted ie calibrated. Put Black masking tape on the surface. Long short these ONLY measure SURFACE IR , THAT IS WHAT IR IS ! Surface eminence of IR radiation,. Ie CAN YOU SEE INSIDE A PERSON? NO ! CAN YOU SEE INSIDE A PERSON HOLDING GLASS ON THEM ? NO! IF YOU WANT TO MEASURE INSIDE THE TANK OR BODY USE A CONTACT THERMOMETER! IR Thermometer CANNOT ACCURATELY MEASURE LONG DISTANCE, LARGE AREA, REFLECTIVE NOR TRANSPARENT NOR INSIDE MATERIALS The LASER is an indication of the lens FIELD OF VIEW ONLY . This guy is correct the sunLIGHT through the glass induces heat on you and interceding air and even the glass slightly. GLASS IS TRANSPARENT TO IR TOO BUT The IR THERMOMETER WILL INFER FROM THE 1st EMITTING SURFACE.

    • @dutchjay1515
      @dutchjay1515 6 лет назад

      Nonya Busnezz right but exactly opposite. Glass is opaque to the IR thermometer but glass is transparent to light and IR and similarly but less so water which is why glass water tanks are SO COOL OR PERV …The laser is an indication of the surface area being measured only and no direct part in measurement. I may make a vid explaining this

  • @tainchains
    @tainchains 2 месяца назад +1

    If you point the laser into the water through the open top will you get the correct water temp?

      Ricks is my go to spot! I just got into the hobby, I keep around 7 different types of higher end goldfish right now. I just started an Oscar tank about a month ago. We should meet at Ricks some time, I would take you to dinner at the buffet next door lol it is pretty dang good. I would love to tour your fish room! I actually just finished up in the military and I am looking at buying a house and dedicating a room to MORE TANKS! Do you know of any clubs arround here? I sent you a request on FB I hope you dont mind.

      There's a planted tank society out of DC but I can't for the life of me remember their name.
      I don't ever look at FB so I didn't see your request.

    I would think the glass would be the temperature of the water. try lifting the lid and testing the water itself. compare with other thermometers. not a single one ever made is 100% accurate IMO

  • @paulgee3411
    @paulgee3411 2 года назад +1

    It would have been a lot simpler to put a cup of hot coffee, or ice inside the tank rather than trying to aim it at a lighter flame!

  • @motto666
    @motto666 4 года назад

    You are measuring all the wrong spot! You should open the lid and hit the infrared into the water and let us see the difference. Water temperature will radiate through the glass, so I guess it should be quite close. When you are holding that freaking hot coffee,can't you feel the heat through the glass?

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  4 года назад

      Yes, I can feel the temp of the glass, and it's close to the temp of the coffee, but IR still can't read the coffee temp. Only the glass the coffee is heating.

    • @motto666

      @@DanHiteshew-oneandonly That is why you need to check the water temperature inside the tank, many fish keepers are using this, why not show?

      @@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Yes, I understand that it does not read thru glass, but it is different for fish tank as the water temperature radiates through the glass, so what you are getting on the outside fish tank is pretty close to the inside water temperature!! Man, it is called "Conduction", go back to your physics 101.
