Never knew you could double click the edge of a window, for example. 🤯
ow wow Gary, thanks a million, that was very very very useful, I don't think I would've discovered the options for Window Tiling, incredibly thankful for your video.
Ever since this feature came out I wanted to try it but the tiling options never did anything. I thought it was broken, but thanks to Gary I knew to look in the System Settings under Desktop & Dock. Now I know that to use any of the tiling options I need to select “Displays have separate spaces.” Even with only one display!
Thanks, Gary! Super informative, as always. One missed item: when two windows are tiled left and right, if you hover the cursor between them in the center of the screen, a small white bar will appear. If you drag this white bar, both windows will resize in tandem.
@@macmost For instance, it's visible at 8:11 at the middle between the windows. It's even more clear if you have margins - then the handle bar will appear between the two windows
@@eclipticpath You can do what you say, but you have to move the sides of each window separately. Move on, then the other. Only with Split View can you move both at the same time.
@@macmost Sorry I perhaps communicated the idea a bit poorly. If there's two windows next to each other, like at 8:11. In the middle of the two windows, a little "pill" like handlebar will appear. @@jrbling25 Yeah, but good luck extracting money from them. There were also several 3rd-party tools for macOS to fill the gap, none of them was sued as far as I know. Again, money. Apple, on the other hand... yeah. A lot of money.
What could be important to understand is that what triggers this is it's the position of the pointer. When that reaches close to the edge of the screen, for instance, that's when the tiling option appears. There are moments when we don't want windows tiling and it just gets in the way. Now, if they could only extend this to Logic Pro. That could really use an overhaul. For instance, you can tear off the tempo window from the inspector, and one would then expect the inspector itself to close. It doesn't. Now you have two versions of the tempo window on the screen, which is nothing short of ridiculous. The tempo window has three columns. The column to the right is SMPTE position, which I do not find helpful. So I want to drag that window halfway off the right side of the screen so that I don't have to look at that column as it takes up valuable space. I can remove that column, but the empty space remains. Also ridiculous. And I can't make that window smaller to get rid of it. Then, when I try to drag it halfway off the screen, it wants to tile instead, which is exactly what I don't have in mind. It would be helpful if you could turn certain tiling options on and off per app. But apparently you can't. Tiling is a step in the right direction, but they've got a heck of a lot more steps to go.
Thank you Gary. for another pearl. Just when you think you know about a feature you always bring so much more to it. BTW are there any options for dual monitor users like there are in magnet?
This is perfect for working on a single screen. Yet, working on multiple screens, and also large/wide monitors, the functionality still lacks some functionality/options compared to dedicated apps.

Thanks for the tutorial! Is there any way to get this to work with adobe programs such as indesign and photoshop? I can't seem to get them to work with this new tiling feature.
Adobe does a lot of custom stuff with their windows, obviously going outside of macOS's standards. Looks like you can't access things in the Green button, nor in the Windows menu. But the drag-to-the-edge functionality still works, as does holding the Option key and dragging.
Just don't use it. If you have turned off "Drag Windows to screen edges to tile," "Drag windows to menu bar to fill screen," and turned ON "Hold Option key while dragging windows to tile" then you should never be bothered by window tiling if you don't want to use it.
Thank you Gary, great video! There's no Menu Bar on the iPad, so no place to put it. Plus, the iPad's apps are sandboxed so the clipboard can't be manipulated like it can on the Mac.
There is a "move to ..." feature in that tilling that I can not seem to undo. It is very confusing and seems like a bug that you can not navigate through. Like in your MacBook with an external display, you can not move your mouse cursor once you choose the "move to..." on either display that window transferred to. Anyone knows how to do this?
"Move to (display)" is not part of this. That has been around for years. It just moves the window to another display for those that have multiple displays. Nothing more complex than that. Not sure what you mean by "you can not move your mouse cursor." It doesn't do anything with the pointer.

Apple finally implements a long requested feature and does it in the most subpar way possible. Between this and the Stage Manager, I can only conclude that Apple has no vision for where they're going with their desktop UX. They're simply throwing random ideas at the wall, unfinished and completely disconnected from each other, and hope something sticks.
Which part? If you don't want to use it, then don't use it. There are some parts you can turn off in System Settings and I show them in the video though.

That's a long time ago, back when MacMost started as a team of us trying to make a 22-minute-per-week "TV Show" in 2007. A quick search shows what she's up to today: mollyberrymk.carrd.co
About this Mac says: Chip Apple M1, Memory 16GB, Startup Disk Macintosh HD, macOS Sequoia 15.0; could it be the HDMI output being converted to DVI using an Apple converter?
@@anthonyminchinton3399 Using HDMI isn't a good idea (why are you using that instead of DisplayPort?) But it shouldn't affect this. I'm not sure what you are seeing there. Maybe call Apple Support and get to the bottom of it.
The biggest downside for me is that it doesn't support working in all apps. For example, iterm and PyCharm. I will have to continue to use the application from Raycast.
Perhaps contact the developers of those apps and ask them to support it? Most third-party apps should just work as long as the developer isn't doing something unusual with the windows.
Craziest thing Gary I can get three squares but when I go to do the fourth one it won’t give it to me it turns it into a half screen anybody else having this issue?
I watched about half of this video hoping you would mention how to turn this feature completely off. I'm sure there are many people who were praying for this feature but not me. After installing Sequoia I started seeing MacOS take over my windows when I moved them from one monitor to the other. I don't like that.
There's no need to turn it off. Just don't use it. If you don't use these commands, then everything is just like it was before. If you don't want the "drag to edges" part, there is a setting for that that I show you.
@@macmost As noted, when I move a window from one monitor to the other, MacOS takes over. I didn't mention that it expands the window to full screen. When I move a window outside of the monitor (i.e., half out side), MacOS takes control over sizing. It would be great if the new window-sizing functions were on command only, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I'm finding the opposite of it being helpful. At least I think that's what's going on. When I drag my open Notes app over to the side of my screen out of the way, it suddenly goes full screen or mostly full screen. I am losing my mind with this thing. How do I turn off whatever is causing this?!

@@macmost Thanks for replying. I will try this and other things and report back if I find a debug scenario. BTW, this is with macOS 15.0.1
Thanks.for all the great videos you create.
can we make shortcuts for Left and Right as well? That is, change the current one to something else such as F2 for example. I ask because I tried it but the setting didn't stay. It worked a handful of times then reset back to the original shortcut for Left, Right, etc
Not sure why it stopped working for you. Check to see if it is at least still shown as a shortcut in the Menu Bar menu.
@@macmost no it goes back to the original when I check there and also under keyboard shortcuts
@@vblack7372 Not sure why it is doing that for you, sorry.
@@macmost no problem, thanks for confirming it should be working though. I’ll try setting up a shortcut in the shortcuts app instead of keyboard shortcut and see if I have any luck. Thanks for the videos you’ve been pumping out lately.
Is Homebrw safe?
I saw some tutorials for ffmpeg
@macmost
It is safe for developers and others that like to use command line tools. But if you aren't one of those people, then you don't need it.
Can you use Fn key in a custom keyboard shortcut?
Not usually. Stick with Command as your primary modifier, and add Option, Shift and Control as needed.
is it possible to change the Shortcut?
Yes. Customize them like you would any other. ruclips.net/video/s6BL2pWYNfA/видео.html
None of these features work on my Mac studio with a 27 inch LG monitor. Is this a limitation of Sequoia?.
These should all work. What happens when you try?
I would like to see an iPad ClipTools application.
Does this work with iPhone mirroring?
In what way? Do you mean can you tile the iPhone Mirroring window? Kinda. Try it.
@@macmost Will do....
I can’t get the existing shown keyboard shortcuts to work. Why are they there if you are supposed to make your own?
Because Im using an external keyboard that doesnt have a function key so will have to re map them 😞Works ok on the MB Air itself at least 🙂
Or just go back to Rectangle, simple but powerful, there's almost too many options with the Mac
Your keyboard doesn't have a Globe or FN key? That's becoming more and more important on a Mac so you may want to look into a new one. Most will have an FN key though. It has been around for a long time.
@@macmost Agreed but this is a relatively new keyboard so will bite the bullet and manually remap. As a veteran Mac user it's a bit embarrassing to have the wrong keyboard!
For me fill and arrange box doesn't appear when I hover pointer over the green button and I should press comand key too, but it works normally when I login in Guest account, does anybody has a clue why?
Do you have any system extensions like third-party window management apps and such? That could be taking over the Green button.
I had magnet and another one like that but I uninstalled them
@@NavidonRUclips Not sure what the problem could be then. It has to be something you installed since it isn't happening in the other account. Keep looking.
Same problem here. I did google search, but could not find any relevant posting on this.
I wonder if globe key can be sticky? Because I have disability that is crutial to me.
Yes. The Accessibility function "Sticky Keys" applies to the Globe/FN key.
@@macmost Interesting. On PC that is not the case. Additional point to Apple for this.
Hello, sir
After updating my Mac, I'm experiencing the following issues:
1. First Login Delay: There's a 4-5 second delay after entering my password on startup.
2. Blank Screen Flash: The screen briefly goes blank for about a second during the initial login.
3. Normal Unlocking: This only occurs after a full restart or shutdown, not when unlocking from sleep.
Could you please help me identify the cause?
Sorry, there's not much I can do for you to help you troubleshoot. You should call Apple Support for that kind of help.
@@macmost heyy thanks for your respond my problem us solved after the new update the file vault option is on automatically that is why that happens
Not sure it has "finally" got Window Tiling, but after forever, it is now less painful.
Classic case of Apple ignoring everyone else, the obvious problems, AND it's own guidelines.
Did the last Sequoia update broke this functionality? I see the option but it makes nothing when I click on it…
Try it with various windows and check settings you may have changed. Try a restart too. Contact Apple Support if nothing works.
@@macmost Thanks, but @CB3riLLC found out what it was:
In settings, under Desktop & Dock, "Displays Have Separate Spaces" has to be toggled on, for the Tiling feature to work.
How do I turn off this feature?
Which part? If you don't want to use it, then don't use it. There are some parts you can turn off in System Settings and I show them in the video though.
@@macmost Thank you. I did manage to disable what wasn't working for me.
Magnet just got Sherlocked.
The windows never move no matter which option I select. All works just as you have demonstrated on my MacBook and my iMac. The only one that does not move the windows is the Mac Studio with the non apple screen.
Bye bye Magnet 😂
It WAS working, but it stopped. Any suggestions?
All of the options aren't working? Try a restart, maybe.
@@macmost Thanks, but i found out what it was. In settings, under Desktop & Dock, "Displays Have Separate Spaces" has to be toggled on, for the Tiling feature to work.
@@CB3riLLC this totally solved the problem! thanks
how do I turn OFF the tiling , I don't like it at all ?
Just don't use it. Having tiling available doesn't change anything, it is just an additional feature. Ignore it if you like.
But keyboard shortcuts still don't work in many applications (like Safari)... how broken is that?
If you are having issues with keyboard shortcuts, I would look into it. It may be something you have installed getting in the way, or maybe a setting.
@@macmost problem is I want to use ctrl+alt+up arrow to maximize but in safari the arrow just scrolls the page (the same as alt+up/down arrow, so there is really no point to reserve that shortcut). I think keyboard shortcuts should work globally instead.
@@TheAlphahot1 That's a much smaller problem than in your original comment. It sounds like you are simply using a combination that is already reserved. So try another. I find it is best to include "Command" to start, and then add Control or Option to that and a key.
@@macmost Yes I had the time to debug it more throughly, thanks for your help!
Windows tiling is still not optimized when you use Stage Manager. The resizes do not account for the side pane that you have when Stage Manager is switched on. Apple, please do this for people who use Stage Manager like me!
Not everyone keeps the left side open, though. Some prefer to fill the screen and bring up the App Sets by moving the pointer to the left side.
My windows are now out of control. Had enough, think I'm going back to Snow Leopard. Or maybe 7.6.
How do i do thirds? Ohh of course you can't lol. I've been an Apple user AND Linux user for many years, its perplexing why Apple (and so many users) think they are implementing "new" things
I'd love to turn this completely off, been using Magnet for years and already more comfortable with it
Just don't use it. Turn off the edge and Option key in System Settings where I show in the video. Then refrain from using the Green button or menu bar commands.
❤
An out of the blue question. I just rediscovered your channel - after over a decade. Whatever happened to Molly Stanberry who was on this channel back then?
That's a long time ago, back when MacMost started as a team of us trying to make a 22-minute-per-week "TV Show" in 2007. A quick search shows what she's up to today: mollyberrymk.carrd.co
does NOT work on my M1 mac mini - none of it - and my system settings desktop & dock are completely different to yours.
Maybe you haven't updated to Sequoia yet then?
About this Mac says: Chip Apple M1, Memory 16GB, Startup Disk Macintosh HD, macOS Sequoia 15.0; could it be the HDMI output being converted to DVI using an Apple converter?
@@anthonyminchinton3399 Using HDMI isn't a good idea (why are you using that instead of DisplayPort?) But it shouldn't affect this. I'm not sure what you are seeing there. Maybe call Apple Support and get to the bottom of it.
😊❤️🇬🇧👏🏽👍🏽
even as someone that uses tmux regularly and have used tiling de for decades, I find mac windows management ever more annoying.
When are we going to 😂 be able to control tiling with our thoughts and feelings? That’s what we want .
I spent 20 minutes trying to find out how to turn off this really annoying feature. 😁
Craziest thing Gary I can get three squares but when I go to do the fourth one it won’t give it to me it turns it into a half screen anybody else having this issue?
Maybe the app you are selecting doesn't allow windows that small.
Uhhhh me in Germany still don’t have it 😢
Did you upgrade to macOS Sequoia?
@@emmgeevideo I'm not seeing that behavior when I try it.
I'm finding the opposite of it being helpful. At least I think that's what's going on. When I drag my open Notes app over to the side of my screen out of the way, it suddenly goes full screen or mostly full screen. I am losing my mind with this thing. How do I turn off whatever is causing this?!
Just turn if off if you find it is getting in the way. I show how in the video.
Too late in the team. No need for that, I have Magnet with ingrained muscle memory.
100% does not work. The three options to Tile, Hold option, Tiled have margins... all grayed out can't be turned on. Choosing from the menubar, doesn't work. Key commands, nope. This is a fake feature that must only be for a select group of developers that didn't make it to the official release.
Do you maybe have "Displays have separate spaces" turned off?
