The price of a replacement Adflo battery is insane! So with a little tinkering and a small buck converter we convert the filter unit to run off an 18 volt Makita battery.

@@FinntheweekendwarriorI have tried all the voltages listed in your video and the comments of this video. Have confirmed it works with a regular adflo battery, as well as different Milwaukee batts. But it does not work currently

I do have some issues with turn on and suspect the board is looking for the temp sensor but I have no battery to check the temp sensor value...
Could anybody measure the room temp resistance of their temp sensor at their battery terminals so I can replace with a dummy resistor?

I measured the resistance and it's using a 5.1k ohm resistor with a grey 10.8v battery . It doesn't change if I put it in the freezer or outside 100F weather. I get a low battery at 10.8v and full at 12.8v. the unit stays on, but I can't control the air volume. I hope it helps you and you can figure out why I can't change the speeds XD.
If you start producing these mate I’ll take one even with the lithium ion 12hour batteries they sell I’d rather use this so it’s not battery if have to charge after every use
You could have used a battery housing from the adflo and 12.6 volts is full battery, 10.6 is nominal volts but great work.
I'm doing the same type of thing but using mine to cool me in this heat.
If you are unable to connect in the way that the video can do the following:
disassemble the old battery and connect the voltage converter instead of the battery cells.
The batteries on the Würth drills/drivers run on 10.8 volts and the batteries are quite small if that's any help to anyone.
Is there also a way to regulate the flow rate ?

How does low voltage cut off work with this? Wouldnt the adflo unit shut off at ~10 volts or whatever, which would over discharge the makita 18v battery to where it may not accept charge. Or does the buck drop output voltage linear to the battery voltage?

Your heatsink is supposed to go ON the mosfet, not on the circuit board behind it.

@@Finntheweekendwarrior Some chips if you read the specs about their thermal heat transfer, the bottom is where the sinking should occur and the PCB might actually include some kind of via for the heat and a metal pad on the bottom of the PCB where you can attach the heat sink. An example is TI's "PowerPad" technology where the heat output from the chip is on the side soldered to the PCB and from there you somehow have to deal with it (metal PCB or heat sink on underside); www.ti.com/powerpad_slma002d-ca. I don't know about MOSFETS...maybe they always take the heat sink on top.

From memory I got 5 buck converters for about 15 dollars and the holder was 15-20

Hey did you ever get that bottom made I'm considering a similar but different approach because they will also run on 14 volt nimh batteries so considering a mod with 12 volt Milwaukee batteries

Yea looks difficult to match that shape theres a trick ill have to look into with fusion that involves using a picture but need to look that up if that helps
What is the polarity of the pins?
I just zoomed in with the same question -- looks like the pin all the way to the outside is negative and the middle pin is positive. Just tried it on my unit and it worked.

Could I do this without a converter ? Want to use 18v Milwaukee batteries we are supplied at work Just don’t think the board and wiring would hold up to rough conditions at work
this set up was more of a prototype than anything. i still am meaning to 3D print a base that would clip in instead of the battery

Good afternoon! Curious what voltage your adflo was running at? Appears my batteries are 14.4. Looking to do this mod with some 14.4 dewalt batteries. And thinking I may not need a regulator
I think the batteries I have were 10.8v. This is based on memory though, if you have your battery from the Advil it should be marked and then yeah would be easy swap! I would advise to do a test run before you do a full mod.

They will also run on 14.4 or the old ones did that had nimh which the even 9lder ones that do run on that will still run on the lithium
The old 3m adflo battery are 14.2v

I'm trying to get my adflo to work on either 12V or 18V Bosch battery packs. Think i'l use the heated jacket adapters for both the batteries since they have a 5.5mm 12v connection and can be bought for around €15. Tested the unit hooked up to a 12v Bosch battery and it worked fine!

Yea as well the 12 volt output off those jacket adapters have the battery protection so you don't drop the voltage too low but as well the 18 volt milwaukee jacket adapter would work as well has a 12 volt output out the side

Do you have any idea why it would shut off after about 20 seconds?
Have you checked what voltage the buck converter is putting out, could be a bad unit. If possible put a meter on it for the 20 second run time.
If everything is set up right the unit should run
Finn's World I did when I set the voltage but not when turning on/running the pack. It seems like a low battery shut off perhaps? Battery was putting out full 18 volts. I'll try to hook up the meter while running and see if there's a voltage drop
That’s all I can think of. People have claimed they run 18 volts straight in to there packs and it worked fine, I rather the safety of the buck converter.
In theory you could probably give it another volt or two and see if it responds better but I’m not telling you to let the smoke out haha exercise caution

I tried to do this on a versaflo but the unit autoshutoff without the data connection from the battery, so I ordered a used adflo unit to do the conversion but im getting the same thing where after a minute or so it starts beeping and then shuts down. I heard the beeping kick in right at the end of your video; did you actually get this running without the battery chip?

I have this exact same problem, runs for a minute or so and shows low charge on the battery indicator, beeps and shuts off. Did you find a solution? I am having the same issue on 3 separate adflo units.

Would this be possible with a 22v. 5.2ah Hilti battery aswell?
There is no reason why it wouldn’t, as long as the buck converter is dialed in you are golden
How much current you need to work on second gear?
I dint know how much current the fan pulls on second gear, I can look into it next time I’m home

If you are having trouble with your model adflo (mine works fine) you can all ways ghost this by measuring the thermistor on your adflo battery and placing a dummy healthy signal.

16 gauge, would not need to be this big

Mine will start to beep and shutdown when the battery gets low, I was thinking without it having the third contact connected it wouldn't sense battery level and would just shutdown...

Does it run for longer than 30 seconds, I did something similar but it doesn't register battery levels and shuts down
Lyle Tarzwell it runs for more than a full day at a time, using the buck converter the battery level indicator still functions
Finn's World copied with a buck converter and still shuts off after a beeping warning for 15 seconds.
What air blower module are you using
@@tarzwell21 Use a multimeter and set the the buck converter to the voltage stated on the back of the original battery that is paired with that adflo. For example the old black batteries are 7.2V whilst the new grey batteries are 10.8V. Hope that helps somebody at least. Thats what worked for me.

Why not disassemble a battery and use the housing? That way it's fully reversable... Screw the Makita adapter to the housing and you're golden!
That’s a great idea. I would still keep a “fly lead” and and use a belt clip with the makita adapter. Just don’t like too much weight hanging off the back there too low.
This can be done neater for sure. I was kinda proofing the concept, but yeah that’s a great option

I'm wondering about the adflo too...I have the chance to get an adflo (missing charger and of unknown battery condition) + 9002x speedglas helmet for about $235. Is that a good price? I'm relatively new to welding and although I know these PAPR set ups are exorbitantly expensive new, I don't really know what risks an old system might contain (besides battery condition--as dealt with in this video, filter condition...but does that even matter since old filters probably filter better but let less air through, and the 9002x is so old there are no ready replacement filters and according to 3M you can't swap in a 9100 series auto-darkening part) and if without knowing those risks 235 is still a good price.
