Drenthe recently received a standing ovation in a Dutch talk show. He says he was sold to Real Madrid far too young and earned three million euros as a 20-year-old. So young, and without parents, and so much money is not good, he immediately bought a Porsche Cayenne. Was it stupid, yes, but with that much money I stopped thinking. After Madrid it went downhill and he started making hip-hop music, but also got the wrong friends around him. Drenthe now works as a psychiatric counselor in a hospital and assists psychiatric patients in emergency situations. According to Drenthe, he has finally found peace in his life and is passionate about helping people in his new job. But at the moment he is still following a care course at the university. Currently he also plays weekends at an amateur club. Does he regret the end of his football career? Unfortunately it didn't go as it should have, but at Real I played with the best players like Benzema and Ronaldo. Of course I will never forget that, but now I have a more important job to help people in need.

as a Dutchman; great video and you told the story well! I believe Drenthe was the only real flop due to his poor attitude (which he's admitted on multiple occasions). Robben was already world class at that time, but he also had the man of glass reputation (injury prone). Van der Vaart had the 60-minute habit, also known with the NT as being out of gas after 60 minutes. RvN was a class apart and Sneijder was fine, just wasn't suited to a different role other than being a typical 10 around that time. Huntelaar would prove to be a great striker in years to come and I believe he could've been a very reliable back-up, but none of the Dutchies were very marketable as Florentino Perez preferred it
ive grow up in Rotterdam and knew older guys who used to know Drenthe growing up, this guy took privet jets to the netherlands and party while he needed to prepare for the next game. Great talent but he didnt had the mindset of a pro player
I lived through Los Oranjes period and you were right. Most actually did good, just Drenthe that flopped really hard, but each have their own demons, Robben had the man of glass period, VdV would have one of the worst case of gassing out I have ever seen (even worse than Özil), Sneijder was fine, but I think he had some psychological issues in Madrid, Huntelaar came simply at the wrong time, because Higuain started to improve massively and no one dared to replace Raul at that time. Ruudjie was on decline at that time. Truthfully I think a massive makeover seemed to be a reasonable solution.
As a Madridista I was a bit too young to understand football during this time, the time was rough and a failure but the 09/10 window changed the future and José aswell who for me started the 2010s dominance even tho he didnt win a UCL for us (2012 Bayern pens was painful) Amazing video and love the content🫡
Great video! As a Dutchman having so many players at Real Madrid really made me proud back in those days. Think we have had the best players around that time and we even made it to the World Cup finale, still hurts till this day.
As a dutchman I must say, well done! Good recap! I think it was De Stefano himself who said after the Dutch were all gone that they should have kept Robben, because he found him exceptionally good. His nickname was ‘man of glass’, because of all his injuries…

Insane talented dutch generation, 2008 euros they played the best football but lost and without Robben’ injuries and casillas toe, Robben and Sneijder could have both been ballon dor winners
To be fair, we have to question the legitimacy of the Russian squad they lost to after all that happened in Russian sporting since. Especially when it came down to the fact that they lost that match on fitness. Which is how everyone in The Netherlands remembers that tournament, they beat the best teams with style only to hopelessly lose to Russia.
@@SevenTheMisgiven That Russian squad were trashed twice by Spain at Euro 2008 though, 4-1 in the group stage and 3-0 in the semi finals. Of course there have been theories about the Spain team of that era as well. What do you think would've happened if Holland had played Spain in the semi finals?
@@ashleythomas4112interesting that brought that up bcus when u think about it doesn't sound so far fetched for the only way to beat them is to take/use their own medicine.. 🤔
@@ashleythomas4112 I don't know buddy. It was just a strange contrast in form of the Dutch squad. Beating Italy and France comfortably (the World champion and runner up of 2006) and then lose rather hopelessly to Russia. Personally I didn't think anything badly about Russia at the time. Dzagoev played well that tournament and I liked him. But then the rest of his entire career was shadey and very much linked with corruption as well. Spain vs Holland in 2008 already would have been interesting perhaps. I am not entirely sure about the strength of the Spanish squad. But you see, it would have made a lot of sense if these 2 squad faced off in 2008 already. And how knows if it would the 1-0 for Spain or the 5-1 for Holland we would get to see. ;)
@@SevenTheMisgiven I do think that Italy and particularly France were on the decline after the 2006 World Cup though. By Euro 2008 Italy were still a decent side with very good players but France were just abysmal, despite themselves having some very good players as well. They were both terrible in 2010 as well, just 2 years later. Dzagoev didn't play at Euro 2008, (he did make his debut for Russia later that year though at just 18 years old) I think you might be confusing him with Arshavin, who was outstanding at Euro 2008. It's interesting that Russia have done very little of note since that Euros though, apart from coincidentally at the World Cup they hosted in 2018. Hmm, interesting. The 2008 Spain squad was a fantastic team with Casillas, Puyol, Sergio Ramos, Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Xabi Alonso, David Silva, Torres, Villa. Spain were undoubtedly very strong at the time. The Dutch squad were also very strong though, it would've been a close, hard fought game I think. It definitely would not have been 5-1 as the Spain team that Holland beat in 2014 was old and tired and facing the end of their legendary golden generation at that World Cup.
Entertaining watch, but they didn't bring Raul in. He'd already been there since 1994 (6 years before the start of the galactico era including 2 champions league wins) and he was a youth team player, ie free.

Huntelaar became the best striker in the Bundesliga and Van der Vaart dismantled other countries in the European and World Cups. Drenthe became the biggest example of wasted talent and now works a 9 to 5. How strange.
Sneijder had to compete with Guti and Van der Vaart for the #10 spot. Robben good as he was and I still believed Madrid should have kept him for a few years, was injury prone. Huntelaar and Drenthe were disaster class signings and Madrid had Higuain at the time. Only Van Nisterooy was deemed a successful signing but injuries ruined him. I think that van Nistelrooij did great at Real. They probably regret selling Sneijder and buying kaka, because kaka was complete shit at real and Sneijder should have won the ballon d’or in the season after. Selling Robben and buying cristiano was probably that best decision ever made by the club. Robben was mostly injured and Ronaldo speaks for itself. Van der Vaart was indeed competing for the nr 10 position, weird to buy him in the first place. Huntelaar was a big talent at the time, but replacing the nr 1 and 2 all time UCL topscorers was probably a but too much for him. Especially for a player coming from the eredivisie.
