    For some reason people get into there heads that they can identify with being native because they watch or read something about our teachings and Heritage. People like that search for external validation through cultural appropriation because who they are ain’t really enough for them.

  • @b.w.22
    @b.w.22 2 года назад +6

    This phenomena is so strange to me. I mean, on one hand at least people in America are starting to value native cultures and not just trying to obliterate it. Also, a lot of folks hear some story about “great grandma” who was Shawnee or whatever but wasn’t. Or maybe was and that’s cool - go learn about your people. But even then it can feel strange. My earliest people here in America were Dutch, but I’m not suddenly going to wear ruffed collars and Puritan hats and carry a sword.

      so Raven and her adorable sibling I'm guessing are Canadian, some place that doesn't get much sun as she implies in the beginning.....but I guarantee you on her trips to LA she was seen as mexican. If Raven was able to get more sun, she in fact would look hella mexican. Thats your clue, if you dont look mexican, a mestizo (metis) society, you most likely are not indigenous or do not have any indigenous ancestry. People know what indigenous americans looks like, stop being ignorant.

    • @b.w.22
      @b.w.22 2 года назад +5

      @@ricodelavega4511 - Huh? What are you talking about? I was saying that it’s odd when people who aren’t indigenous claim to be, like her “friend” who wasn’t really her friend in the end. I’m not suggesting that this gal is pretending about anything or needs some sun(?).
      Mostly, I was noting that there’s something particularly shitty about someone who has no native ancestry claiming that they do, then taking on looks and traditions that aren’t their own and sometimes even taking away opportunities from actual native folks in scholarships or grants, etc. And all of this is especially f’d up when those cultures have had to face unending harassment, humiliation, and violence historically.
      Edit: I also think it’s strange that you think if this gal had more of a tan, she’d look Mexican and therefore identifiably indigenous. Spain is as European a country as France or Germany and were pretty heavy-duty genocidal colonizers in their own right.

    Eeee! That's crazy, I never understand why people do that. I've met many and even now there are some I'm observing just to see how far they'll go. And that's why it's important for us to not share our traditional craft or spiritual knowledge with everyone because they use it later for the wrong reasons, cultural appropriation and hippie new age stuff. Don't blame yourself though, you just think everyone is as kind and honest as you. This is an experience that will help you be more careful and avoid a bigger issue 💕 you're beautiful! And your little brother is so cute!

      "I never understand why people do that" ... Because in the US and Canada native american identity, culture, and history have been HYPER ROMANTICIZED. It's been at least 60 years of this hyper romanticizing. Films, books, etc. It's what has caused the pretendian cancer, native larpers, and native culture fetish. Fortunately this degeneracy doesn't exist in Mexico, or among our neighbors in Guatemala, despite there being dozens of tribes and despite a large part of the population having extremely high percentage of indigenous blood even if they themselves are not indigenous.

    I hate those people not only because of obviously the fact that it's stealing identity but also because they make it SO much harder for ACTUAL indigenous people who maybe dont phenotypically present as solely ndn to navigate ntv society outside of their own community that knows them. I feel a lot for afro-ntvs who present solely as black. It especially makes things difficult for native americans from south and central america and lower north america because in Latin America/Abya Yala, despite the fact that indigenous nations there have been fighting for recognition for centuries, the criollo governments refuse to acknowledge sovereignty. In addition to that, many "latin american" natives were enslaved in Spanish silver mines and forcibly displaced across latam to work. anddddd in addition to that, most indig communities in latAM do not keep written records of who is what, most things are recorded orally instead. There arent enrollment systems and written english/spanish documents like in US and Canada. No one keeps digital records of lineage because most people are too poor to own or have access to the technology required for that. Therefore if asked, next to none of the tens to hundreds of millions of valid, traditional, connected indigenous people from the south can offer documents "proving" indigenous identity. The only thing they can show is blood quantums averaging 60-100% ndn and being ndn presenting and ndn presenting family, but that leaves out the millions of mestizo-presenting and black-presenting ntvs in LatAM and obviously BQ is bad. Pretendians mess up SO MUCH for real natives. Sorry for my rant, they just make my blood boil. Thank you for sharing your story

      In latin america only people who look (and are) fully indigenous are considered indigenous, mestizos are not indigenous, they are what they are, mixed race people
      You shouldn't use your USA opinion towards the entire Latin America

    • @val2690
      @val2690 Год назад

      @@TheSamuelbest12 I'm not from USA, I'm indigenous from mexico. You don't understand what Indigenous or Mestizo means. Indigenous means being culturally and politically Indigenous, and recognized as part of an Indigenous community. Indigenous is not a race. Indigeneity is sovereign. Race is NOT sovereign. Race is "Indian", how colonizers first racialized us based on looks, and is based entirely in the opinions of white ppl: the opposite of sovereignty. Mestizo can mean both culturally mestizo (many people who have 100% Indigenous ancestry and are not mixed race are culturally/ethnically mestizo) and racial mestizo with mixed ancestry. Many mixed race "mestizo" Indigenous people speak the language, are part of indigenous communities, and are treated as Indigenous by local and foreign settler states. Many monoracial "indio/indian" people are culturally assimilated and part of the ethnically mestizo social class. EVERYONE FROM LATIN AMERICA KNOWS THIS.
