I was forced into early retirement at 60 in 2016. Lived off my savings for 2 years till I was 62 and then started my SS and small pension. Real estate was an important part of my investments(made the biggest gains and really didn't plan on it). When I was 41, I really started hammering my 401K plan at work. They would have a match, plus I would put all my bonuses into it and I put that money into a very safe investment which was good but bad but it turned out good because of 2009 market disaster. Plus we had a very good company stock purchase plan which I maxed out. I also maxed out my IRA every year(was getting 5.5% on 5 year certificates of deposit back in the early 2000s). I now I'm retired in the Philippines with my Filipina wife. We paid cash for our house here in Cebu City. Start early, diversify your investments, go slow, don't try to hit "homeruns" with everything you got when it comes to investing. Start planning early, go slow, diversify, live life, have a goal.
Thanks for all your great information. Your always showing us good ways and telling us even your stumbles in life. As a trucker I've been to 48 states and why I love being a trucker. It was two years ago I met my Filipina and started international travel as well as her guidance into savings. She's very strong on not wasteful spending. Always enjoy your videos thanks for sharing your views and experiences.
Inspirational story! Alaska, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Italy ….still in our bucket list. We’re Canadian Citizen and has travelled U.S./Canadian provinces including some Asian countries.
Good to know another AA Million Miler. It makes us LIFETIME AA Gold members. The privileges (for example early boarding) apply not only to AA but to other airline members of the OneWorld Alliance (example, Cathay Pacific, JAL, British Airways, etc.). My ‘awakening’ happened when my wife and I were visiting the British Museum in London 25 years ago. A tourist bus came and unloaded senior tourists, many of them on wheelchairs, to visit the museum. Right there and then, we decided not to wait till we are seniors to visit all the places on our bucket list.
Thank you grandpa for sharing your "journey" over the decades. It's always good to pick up a few lessons from someone's experience. I'm glad I traveled to a few places before the pandemic Inspite of my older sister's thinking that there's no need to travel to have enjoyment in life. I started traveling in 2012 after my husband passed away and stopped, temporarily, I hope, in February 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. The places I have visited are the ones I truly wanted to visit, like The Lady of Fatima in Portugal, Cinque Terre in Italy, Machu Picchu in Peru, and Coron, Palawan. That visit in Palawan was an eye opener to the natural beauty of the Philippines that God blessed our country. So when corona becomes lethargic, Mindanao, the Visayas and the Mountain provinces here I come. I don't know where I picked up these passages but here they are: Life is a gift Live it Enjoy it Celebrate it and Fulfill it.
Thanks for your inspiring story Grandpa, you remind me of my own Grandpa. What you said is true about enjoying life while you can, We immigrated in the U.S. since 2004 and while working hard in our job as nurses, we have been travelling with our little kids too, in fact we have visited Europe for 3 weeks and saw different countries, including Italy,Spain and France, we also have seen Canada,Mexico,Japan, been back to the Philippines 6 times already, and we hope to travel more. Also while doing this I have been I always mindful of our investments as well so we can retire comfortably someday. More power to you and for giving us some moral lessons that could be helpful for us as we navigate our life as well.
Grampa thank you for sharing your accidental plan. You were very resourceful as well as creative. You did well. I know you are spiring the young ones to strive for the better. God bless you.
I retired at age 65; since I’m financially stable, my sister & daughter advised me to retire while I’m still strong enough to travel without a cane, walker or wheelchair. God bless us all.
Wow, amaze at how many places you have been. That is so true, some people always say I will enjoy life later and later never comes...Love hearing your story, great life
Later never comes because of this pandemic. If it wasn't fir that I would have been retired and living in Kidapawan last September. Now it seems like a long lost dream
Great advice! I can relate to many of what you’ve experienced.. I learned early on as well that it would have been very frustrating to look at the cost of education for our kids, save up for them while you build your nest egg and still find time to enjoy life.. and like you, learned the best way is to also increase your earning power. My kids graduated college which I helped pay for from my income from a job that took me to many places in the country and some parts of the world. While retiring in the Philippines is not in my plans, it’s nice to know it is an option if things change drastically in the States. Thank you for sharing your wisdom to help many of your “kababayans”. Stay safe and healthy! Cheers!
It made me smile because of the similarities but based in Europe. Thank you for sharing. Truly enriching experience. Still hiking in the German Alps and currently enjoying Geneva Switzerland
Community colleges are still affordable. Students should attend the first 2 years at a community college and then transfer to a STATE university for the last 2 years. State universities have affordable tuition for residents. Parents should be building up their retirement accounts and not paying for college tuition, students can take out loans if they really want to go to a private university or work for their tuition while in school. Paying for everything once kids turn 18 is not teaching them personal responsibility and independence.
Very good video. I started saving at age 27. Lucky to work at a company that offered at 401k putting 3 to 5% a week of pay away for retirement. Start young
Yes enjoy life while we can I should have been somewhere if not with this pandemic my daughter has her own family and settled I guess I could do whatever I intended to do God willing
Vlogger Grandpa when my children were in Junior High School I told them that they could attend any collage or university that they could afford to pay for. They were upset but they got various jobs and earned the money they needed. My daughter didn't own a car until her final year in college and when she graduated she only had eight thousand dollars of student loans, which she paid off in one year. My son went to a private university and graduated with about twelve thousand dollars of loans but he then went to So. Korea and taught English and had his loans paid off in two years.
Good job! You did them a favor by teaching them independence and personal responsibility early. As soon as kids turn 18, they are adults and they should be treated as such. I was independent at 18, did not like it then and was upset at my parents but I thank them now for letting me fly out of the nest at 18. They let me fly but still guided me until I was in full control of my life in my early 20s.
Wow your story really great as long as young people wants to explore themselves go on to their dream and once they become older like me it's hard to do all you want. Your journey sir is a grateful experience.
So true. Worrying about money in retirement is stressful. Stress kills. I noticed that people who are stress-free live longer and can afford the best healthcare.
Retirement was in my dreams. If not for this pandemic I would have been retired last September. Now it seems like a long lost dream to retire in the Philippines
You definitely have to go to Alaska as soon as possible, due to climate change, big chunks of glaciers are already melting away. When we were there 5 yrs. ago via Princess Cruise, we witnessed through our own eyes, big chunks of glaciers were washed away.
Awesome upload, thank you so much for sharing your story, wisdom & financial advice. You are Role Model. I haven’t traveled to a lot of countries, I did some traveling but I want to do more. I want to pay off all my debts first.🙏🏽👏👏👏
So smart, grandpa, that’s exactly we plan on doing, so glad we,stayed in Asia, including Phil. And bee in some other countries too💕 we love to travel but now there’s so much dramas🤔 thank you😎
Hello My name is Michael and I am from Reno Nevada, just moved to the Philippines 1/1/2021, Came here but next day they closed it all off. I was in full lock-down for a fill 6 months due to my age of 75. Now restrictions have been lifted in Manila and I can now go into the Malls and shop. We are doing fine in Manila Philippines. Soon we will be Moving into a brand new condo in Ortigas any day now. i can now go outside with my children ages 15, 14, and 10. I am an American my wife is Filipina, I came here on a Balikbayan Visa.
That a great adventure you have reach different countries inspiring video. You have invested a lot of time while working abroad that's amazing experiences a fearless man full of courage.
Did you ever run out of passport pages? In the old days, the State Department just gave you additional pages. Some years ago, they stopped that practice due to security concerns. These days you have to renew the passport earlier than the expiry date, if you run out of passport pages due to a lot of travel.
You are very blessed grandpa. You had a very inspiring journey with your career. Also, It did not happen by accident, you work hard for the privilege of life you live now and not a-lot of people have the same drive, opportunity, mindset and perspective in life. Actually, if I compare you to some old folks your age, a lot of them have not seen the ocean nor visited the beach I think not just old folks. May I ask how young you are?
Lucky with the frequent flyer miles. Here in Australia, they put an expiry in the miles forcing you to use or loose. Definitely, visit the Sunshine Coast if you're in Australia.
There are several ways of 'resetting' the expiry date. For example, AA miles expire 24 months from the last transaction or trip. If you have an AA-affiliated credit card, a purchase of $10 will add 10 miles to your account and will reset the expiry date of all your miles to a new 24 month expiration.
Guten Tag! Bonjour! Magandang Umaga! Good Day! I am Canadian living in Canada. When I was seven year my father got to save the money I had at that age, so when I got my first pay cheque my father got to save five percent of my pay cheque. when I was in my 40's, I had $200,000 Canadian Dollars saved up. Why save up money when it is easier when you are young?
Sir: How old are you when you retired?.. Im 65 years old and im still working @Veterans Hospital Here in Seattle. I enjoy what i do. Plan to retired in the Philippines. Thank you for all the Info: i have medicare Part A now but No Part B becoz im still working. i do not collect pension yet . I will do the same as you said Medicare Advantage Plan.( Kaiser Permanente) Plan to comeback to US just in case got sick you never know! I Follow and watch most of your Videos. More Power to you Sir: and again thank you so much for the information i learned a lot from you :)
Good morning, Did you graduate college in the Philippines? In my case, I came over to the USA at 17 y/o. I attended college here in tfw USA through scholarships and worked part-time! I started @ $2.90 per hour...yup! Minimum wage...finally completed my RN/BSN/MSN with 2-young kids! We traveled 2-3 times per year as a family, sometimes with extended family
You have traveled the world extensively! WOW! CONGRATS🎉🎉🎉 YOU are very smart! Lots ofAmericans have difficulty passing the CPA...YUP! Can you imagine if you waited traveling until after retirement? No can do! That’s the problem with most Pinoys...that I know here in the USA. GALLING po ninyo!🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for your wisdom!!! Knowledge is power... live below your means, but also reward yourself....we are not getting younger, I agreed with all your experiences in life....More power to your vlog.... Thanks for your life sharing...
I think mistake number one would be thinking of retiring in the Philippines at this time. As badly as the government is treating its own citizens, I have great reservations, especially when the President says he is going to ignore any judiciary rulings from the courts. Additionally, an unelected body (the IATF) is now running the country and destroying it. It is so sad what they are doing there. So many businesses went permanently bankrupt or were forced to close. Crime is higher because of a lack of food because millions have lost their jobs, and no one in government cares how many people their own policies are killing, probably far more than the Covid Virus.
Great video Vlogger Grandpa! It really motivated me. And what an adventure, going from the Philippines to North America at such a young age. But how did you ever manage to get a visa for Canada, and after that for the USA??? And how did you ever raise the money to go so far, because you were not rich!
@John P. As I said in the video, most of the time I used Frequent Flyer Miles that I accumulated because of the volume of travel I did while I was in corporate development/sales job. How I got to Canada is covered in one of my vlogs. Here's the link to my channel. ruclips.net/channel/UCYU70S4jYvhw0BOetMFdD6Avideos
None! I will "play as I go" until budget for the month/year is depleted. No sense budgeting at this age as long as emergency reserve is maintained. 😆😆😆
Sounds like you just got lucky. Your parents sent you to accounting school, and then you fled the country upon your graduation. You fortunately married a nurse who earned more than you did in the early years. You lived in a country that fortunately has a real social security system, along with other ways to save like 401k’s. You luckily lived in a country with easy access to the stock market. Retirement planning in the Philippines is practically nonexistent. Ask any Filipino professional how they planned for retirement, and you will be rewarded with a blank expression. I doubt you’ll meet anyone who has heard of the 4% rule.
What is that! 😆😆😆 No, I just did not get lucky. It was planned since my early age. I was still in College when I realize and knew that it will be difficult to make it in the Philippines (not impossible...but hard). Thus, my effort was to immigrate somewhere else as soon as I finished college. I applied in some five countries to be able to get out and opportunity presented itself in two countries (Canada and US). It took a lot of effort on my part at that early age.
Turkey is a transcontinental country located in both Asia and Europe. 97% of Turkey's territory lies in Asia and only 3% of its territory lies in Europe.
I will be eligible for Medicare at age 65. If I retire at age 62, what affordable choices do I have for healthcare coverage? How do the other early retirees do it?
@Joven Lopez. That is covered in one of my vlogs. Here's the link to my channel. ruclips.net/channel/UCYU70S4jYvhw0BOetMFdD6Avideos Keep in mind that until you reach the age of 65, you will not be able to join Medicare. Your best bet is to find a private health insurance until you reach at the age of 65.
The income limit to qualify for ACA (Obamacare) is 48K. If your only source of income at retirement is Social Security, you will most likely qualify. Premiums vary by state and the type of coverage (HMO vs PPO, Bronze vs. Silver vs. Gold). You can check what is available in your are at Healthcare.gov website.
I did. I'm very happy with what I achieved. I'm so happy with my life. I just hope I'll be happy as well on my death bed. Thank you, and wish you as much, if not more, happiness in your life. 😉
@vloggergrandpa2707 Grandpa, don't be thinking too much about dying because you look very healthy at your age whatever it is. I'm 62 but I feel 92, aches and pains, forgetfulness, stress of life etc.
The only way that was able to happen was to use free airfare for your self and family that your company paid for all those business travels and this is not available to most humans on earth
@Barlag I was working for a subsidiary of a NYSE company (Sun Oil Company). We separated from this company and became our own public NYSE company (Sun Distributors and we changed the name to Sun Source Company).
I was forced into early retirement at 60 in 2016. Lived off my savings for 2 years till I was 62 and then started my SS and small pension. Spot on! Don’t wait for retirement before doing things you want to do or you’ll regret it later.
I totally agree with u. Life is very short and many uncertainties. Enjoy life as we go but save as well .

Bad planning, but I love it. Hahaha. I'm like you. I completely agree. I am 36. I am saving enough, but I keep a good budget for traveling.
Investing rightly today can save you a whole lot of stress in the nearest future

Spot on today my friend
So inspiring!
Good morning,
Did you graduate college in the Philippines?
In my case, I came over to the USA at 17 y/o. I attended college here in tfw USA through scholarships and worked part-time! I started @ $2.90 per hour...yup! Minimum wage...finally completed my RN/BSN/MSN with 2-young kids!
We traveled 2-3 times per year as a family, sometimes with extended family
You have traveled the world extensively! WOW!
CONGRATS🎉🎉🎉
YOU are very smart! Lots ofAmericans have difficulty passing the CPA...YUP! Can you imagine if you waited traveling until after retirement? No can do!
That’s the problem with most Pinoys...that I know here in the USA. GALLING po ninyo!🎉🎉🎉
Education is the Key.
Thank you for your wisdom!!! Knowledge is power... live below your means, but also reward yourself....we are not getting younger, I agreed with all your experiences in life....More power to your vlog.... Thanks for your life sharing...
Right enjoy life while you can BEFORE retirement. You can't enjoy in a wheelchair.
Take advantage of airlines Miles and hotel points
Via Credit card. But if you cannot pay it off every month
Don't do it
Well said Grandpa!!!👌👌👌👍👍👍👏👏👏
Lesson learned.....
I really thought you gonna say save money for kids college. Thank you for your wisdom 🙏🏼.
I did not save, but I was lucky enough to have paid for all their college education. No regrets on that!

@@vloggergrandpa2707 I meant to get so far from PH to Canada. But ok, I will watch the video. Thanks.
Wow, that’s a lot of beautiful places to have visited! Now that you’re retired, what’s your budget for travel each year?
None! I will "play as I go" until budget for the month/year is depleted. No sense budgeting at this age as long as emergency reserve is maintained. 😆😆😆
Hi
Like to ask you some personal question, is it possible to do it by email? Or phone?
Sure. Please send me your email address and I will respond.
good advice
Idol ko si Lolo ;)
I think Turkey is part of Europe not Asia.
Turkey is a transcontinental country located in both Asia and Europe. 97% of Turkey's territory lies in Asia and only 3% of its territory lies in Europe.
Thank you po
I live in st maarten also , hope you liked my island Grandpa Godbless
Wow 😮! 👏

Take care of your nest egg, even before your kids leave the nest.

Congratulations
My husband is planning to retire but then pandemic comes he decided to wait.
You had a good life tito
@Sperry411 Oh, noooo! Hope those aches and pains go away and try to relax. 😉
Pretty good advice…
well said grandpa
I’m hearing that you need Covid vaccination to renew your Philippines passport. Is this true?
Never heard that one before.
We both have same concept the only difference was i took an early retirement. Thanks Grandpa you actually inspired me!
The only way that was able to happen was to use free airfare for your self and family that your company paid for all those business travels and this is not available to most humans on earth
Very true. Counting my blessings.
Wow grandpa you are well traveled, who did you work for when you were traveling that much must be a Fortune 500 company, just wondering. Great video.
@Barlag I was working for a subsidiary of a NYSE company (Sun Oil Company). We separated from this company and became our own public NYSE company (Sun Distributors and we changed the name to Sun Source Company).
👍✅👍
Did you contribute to a 401k account?
Yes, but I closed the account and rolled it to a self-directed IRA when our company was divested and became public.
I'm 65 and getting disability now just retire.good choice
if you retire today, you cannot even travel
The economic hardship , recession , unemployment and the loss of job caused by covid pandemic is enough to push people into financial ventures .
