  • Do you want to have a beautiful grass lawn? If so, aeration is a key component to creating the proper environment for your lawn to thrive. Aeration is the process of pulling plugs of soil and grass from your lawn. This allows water, air, and nutrients to penetrate further into the ground which promotes overall turf health. Local companies would be happy to provide this service for you but its not cheap. I highly recommend buying or renting an aerator so you can do it on your own. To save money, you can split the cost of the purchase or rental with a neighbor, friend, or relative. This video covers the how, why and when part of aeration.

      I’m not sure what brand this one is. I didn’t make the original purchase. There are several companies with similar models. I have Bermuda so we don’t overseed. It spreads rapidly on its own when healthy. Yes aeration is a great idea before overseeding some other types of grass.

      Turn it on, mark the location of each head, and then just drive around them. You can do this!

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  3 года назад +1

      Seeding depends on the type of grass you have. I have Bermuda so there is no need to seed. It spreads naturally or you can buy some pieces of sod and place small pieces in bare areas. Spread some sand around it, keep it watered, and within a few months it will fill in. Yes, post aeration is a great time to apply weed preventer and/or fertilizer.

    The John Deere pull behind aerator is 499 with 48 spikes. Isn’t more tines per foot worth the additional cost?

    So can you do this in the fall as well? Down in Texas it is way too dry until about October. My lawn is Bermuda but kind of thin. Hoping to thicken it up some and promote more health.

    I sent soil samples to Michigan State. They told me that with my soil and my grass that once every 4 years was good. I rented a walk behind and we slit seeded after. It broke up the plugs. It worked great.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  4 года назад

      That’s great! The need for aeration would be determined mostly by your soil type. In the southeast, we have a lot of clay in our soil and it doesn’t allow water to soak in well. Aeration helps tremendously and many lawns here benefit from annual aeration. Golf courses here aerate multiple times each year.

    But do you really need to aerate, and every year? I've seen it all too often, especially when someone owns the equipment. "I gotta use it every year, and do the entire yard" without ever really considering if it's necessary. General rule, if after a good rain you can stick a short knife blade into the ground using just your thumb, then the soil is good. When you have wet areas where the plugs are deformed because of how loose the soil is, that tells you the soil isn't compacted. The reason for aerating is to disrupt compact soil. Your whole lawn may not need it, but maybe some parts do. Try a year where you aerate sections and not others of the same types of soil. Do half the yard by the road and not the other, do some wetter spots and not others, etc. Take notes over the season and look at it over the whole season, including how the lawn looks after the aeration with all the plugs and holes all over. At a minimum, you'll know where to spend your time and where not to.

      Not at all. With Bermuda, you can really aerate anytime the ground is soft enough.
