They shoot themselves on the foot.*
Unity devs can finally jump to an engine that's just like Unity with nice features..... I wonder what else is in the Taunjie engine roadmap, perhaps Unity users should also all group up and chip in to buy the source code so they can implement all the features and fix the wont fix bugs aswel.
China requiring foreign companies to start joint venture is very smart on their part. The company gets to profit from a huge market, and China gets to keep some of the know-how. I bet many other well known companies already do that, but we just don't know about it
Pretty sure it’s required by law, like EVERY foreign company has to do that. But like you china can keep the know how and have some control over the company, and reason foreign companies allow this is because China gives them much higher percentage of overall returns and favorable treatment.
In a way it makes sense. Both Unity China and UE are own by companies that make games while Unity Technologies does not. Unity Technologies only needs to care about making money from Unity engine but the game companies care more about making money from their games and reducing development cost. That creates different priorities and incentives. Could this be backported? Maybe but judging from the version numbering change they probably didn't intend to maintain compatibility.
It does not make any sense. Unity has only source of income: the unity platform, so they have more incentive to create a better platform. Instead Unity China and EU consider that both platforms are a side-project.
@@eng3d Their only incentive for creating a better platform is having a strong enough competitor. Who do you think those are? Look at what happened with CPUs when AMD finally came out with Ryzen versus before when it was basically all Intel. On the other hand for the companies that make games they can either save money by getting the same work done with fewer workers or getting more work done with the same amount of workers. Those are very tangible motives. For Unity it would be much harder to prove that any particular feature will earn them more money. They can't implement it and then go "hey we are going to charge you more money now that Unity has this feature". The only thing that would pressure Unity is a competitor offering this feature which could cause existing clients to switch over. Who do you think is that competitor?
Whoever still uses Unity… my honest condolences. No bad words. People still seem to love it. I can't share this experience after two Unity projects with 40+ people on each project.
@@hop3studio511 In short words: It's a difficult relationship. I have been a 3D artist for over 26 years, started with Unity around 12 years ago with a small project. If you don't have any programming knowledge, it was difficult to find support in any way. The forums were toxic several years ago, and even on simple questions you got responses like: If you can't do that easy thing, better stop trying to make a game. In comparison: Whatever question I ask on UE Forums and certain chat solutions, more than often I get response and help from Epic Devs themselves, sometimes with direct solutions. Later on, on bigger commercial projects, we ran into bugs that were never fixed for a decade. We had to use third-party solutions to get WYSIWYG into the normal editor. Things you get out of the box with Unreal Engine. I am not UE fanboying at this point - but pointing out that Unity struggles to find a sweet spot that seems more than easy for Epic Games. That involves all sides: engine, devs and the community. There are many nice games being done with Unity! There are many very talented people. But they know this engine from the inside out, the odds and probably how to deal with several obstacles. Obstacles that can cost a ton of money and time. I wish Unity all the best, but I closed that chapter for myself.

Gotta love how a lot of people in the comments are quick to jump at the idea chinese Unity devs might be violating Epic's copyright and not, you know, they have talented (and dedicated) enough developers working for a company (with a seemingly more focused vision than western Unity) that sees a potential for developing similar tools for such a large market as China because, apparently, Epic cracked the ONLY way to implement such tools on an engine and it's impossible for others to do so without copyright violations involved... especially in *shudders* China. I mean, if I'm proven wrong, so be it, but when it involves companies as big as these ones, I just doubt copyright infringement can go unnoticed.
Again, if tech was their priority, I am pretty sure they will be able to do legal walk-around or even come with something new. The company just seems to want to go easy path last years, so there is huge chance, they went easy path in this features too. And sure, China has long history of innovation and no evidence of copying western products.
They no doubt have talented and dedicated devs, nobody thinks they are a bunch of cavemen banging on keyboards with rocks and copy pasting code. Utilizing others work doesn't contradict that and they work in a system that encourages that as they are their own country with their own laws so it's perfectly legal there. Of course they will integrate features that would get them sued to oblivion if done outside of China.
@@vin7524 Feel free to correct me if I'm not getting this correctly, but AFAIK, "taking" a feature from one piece of software to another is not as simple as Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V a piece of code. There's a lot involved to just make it work, much less work well. If we were talking about a brand new engine that came out of nowhere, fine. But we are talking about feature implemented on a fork of Unity which works pretty differently to Unreal. At worst, this could be "reverse engineering" of those features which, in that case, it would be a perfectly legitimate development. To me, it seems quite evident that Unity China is following a bery different work ethic that main Unity, so I don't think this would be far fetched.
@@Diegorskysp17 Of course they have slightly different base that to implement it on. But both are working with same principles and are even written in same language. You still can steal feature's source code by decoupling it from its original base and align it to another one. It does not need to be 1:1 copy-paste. I guess exact principles for realisation has been patented and not general principle (maybe you will prove me wrong if you are familiar in this field and find proof it is not). And statement that "reverse engineering" is perfectly legitimate is crazy. Also they even do not need to bother with reverse engineering as they have full source code available on github.
@@DireSwift Like I replied to another person here, in my (admittedly quite limited) understanding of software development, just the sheer complexity of integrating Nanite and Lumen from Unreal to Unity would mean that you are, at worst, reverse engineering the thing. I'm not sure how source code access and it's "licensing" works tho, so I won't get there.

8:32 Based on that comment, I'm guessing no game made with Tuanjie will be released in the West. That also means this version will have separate system requirements.
He said "China creators and/or users", not "China creators and users". Also the quotes he used don't even mention users, they just specify the engine is for Chinese creators.
@@Nesuniken That's... semantics. If it says for Chinese creators, then it's likely only going to be for the Chinese market. They could expand further, but legal issues might be present.
That's progress! If the realized that China is way beyond them as far as tech goes and worked in harmony rather than the hostile attitude that prevails, we will all benefit. Maybe sooner than later,
Hmm... why wouldn't Unity want to bring these advanced features back to the rest of the world? Only reason I can think of is copyright. How "clean" is the nanite-like Unity? Is there any possibility that code from Unreal made its way across? (And before anyone points out, clean room reverse engineering is obviously fine, but if you can't establish that legal difference, you open yourself to a potentially ruinous copyright claim even if it's a different language)

I'm not sure what you're going on about, there might be some unstable things in unity but that's true for any engine and tbh I don't think godot is really a competitior to Unity, godot lacks even the most basic features expected from an engine like a proper asset store, terrain editor, etc..., but all of this is not to support unity's bad financial descisions, but as of right now, I do not think Godot as a software is even remotelly as good as Unity

Thats ging on for years now...
This is not true. The Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise (WFOE or WOFE) are a thing for a long time now JV is not mandatory.
So it's basically a beta-testground for Unity's upcoming features, such as the dynamic LoD system which is suposed to rival nanite.
unity sure bring some interesting news

What bad about unity? I'm really asking out of curiosity

So can we get a torrent of it???? MEGASHARE?

I wish that Unreal Engine has c# support. I really, really wish that...
Hmm... why wouldn't Unity want to bring these advanced features back to the rest of the world? Only reason I can think of is copyright. How "clean" is the nanite-like Unity? Is there any possibility that code from Unreal made its way across? (And before anyone points out, clean room reverse engineering is obviously fine, but if you can't establish that legal difference, you open yourself to a potentially ruinous copyright claim even if it's a different language)
