Emily, if you read this, thanks for doing this! This is a great and really entertaining series because of you. It's been quite some time since I got my license and it's so much fun to see the learning curve we all have had. And many thanks to Richard for filming his work, of course, too! Really hoping we'll see all the progress till the exam.
Don't worry Emily (if you look at these comments), we all make mistakes. I remember driving the wrong way up a one-way street during the lesson before my test. Scared my instructor to death; then passed the test with only 2 minor faults 😂 You're doing really well overall. Keep up the good work!
I wish I'd been taught by someone like you, Richard. I wasn't taught about open and closed junctions, "walking" and "jogging", etc. Even when training to be an instructor, I was still not taught about these things. Your pupils are fortunate to get someone such as you, Good luck to Emily. I'm sure she will learn quickly.
I feel so invested in Emily's journey. Looking forward to seeing her grow and develop her skills. I never realised how complex driving actually is and so many things that I take for granted after driving for many years, actually require lots of intuition and skill to do. When you explain it step by step it blows my mind what's involved.
Richard, you should really consider teaming up with the BBC or another channel to produce driving safety video's to remind everyone to drive safely similar to the 'Green Cross Code man' or the Tufty Club. My British wife reminds me that her brother was a member of the Tufty Club in the 70's and 80's.
Richard, your teaching is just excellent, it's a world away from when I got taught. I still like checking into your videos even after passing a few years ago and I try to watch your videos that aren't directly to do with passing the UK driving test as someone who is always looking to improve their driving after getting the pass and generally curious and interested in cars/driving. Seeing your teaching directly on actual lessons just proves more to me how much of a great driving education channel this is.
Just passed my test today with 1 minor, and got a big compliment from the examiner saying i dont drive like a learner. These videos have been really helpful thank you.
i have never been inside a car front, but i have made this initiative to follow through these tutorials and one day I will own & drive my own! Thank coach!!
This video is extremely helpful to me right now, I’m currently at over 20+ hours of lessons with my driving test booked for November 15th but something I keep struggling at is moving off more quickly when I’m stopped/stationary at any point , only because I’m afraid If I try to move off too quickly I’ll stall but my instructor understands why I take my time to move off
I'm also currently on my lessons with a test booked soon, something my instructor taught me because i struggled with the same thing, especially on hills, is to watch the road ahead and treat it like a prepare to move off, so biting point before you can move so that it's just a little bit more when it's time to go
I know this is months and months late but I just want to let you know that when I took my test, I was slow pulling away at a set of traffic lights because I thought I'd stalled and still only got a minor for it, stalling isn't an issue (nor is thinking you've done so!) unless you're downright dangerous and I doubt you're that. I hope your test went well!
I'm really enjoying these lessons with Emily. I'm learning better with her and from her mistakes. I would love to see more videos as long as it doesn't interfere with her practice regarding the cameras and the stress of filming, thank you very much ❤
This video (as all your other videos!)is a gem! Thank you, Richard...and Emily for agreeing to have your session on video. I've had 15 hours of lessons, can drive now on country roads when it's nearly empty 😒 but struggle with junctions etc... add to the fact that I never had that kind of detailed instruction. Wish I lived near Colchester! Thanks again and keep up the fantastic lessons/videos!
as a person in an entirely different country, your videos are SUPER informative and just plain fun to watch even though yall drive on the wrong side of the road ;) . Somehow, listening to someone talk about the field they know a lot about is an enriching experience, and im just happy to get driving tips regardless! Keep doing what youre doing, youre a wonderful instructor and make learning a joy.
Hi Richard, just wanted to say a massive thank you for all the videos you put on RUclips to help us beginners learn how to drive. I can honestly say your videos helped so much more than any driving instructor I had. I passed today first time with 4 minors and I put this down to your videos very clear explanations. Keep up the good work and thank you 😁🙏
From Australia here. I got my Manual car couple of days ago, but I can honestly have say it’s way better than driving an automatic, hands down. I’ve only had 3 hours of actually learning from a instructor, driving my workplace’s manual Hilux to get some local morning breakfast at a near by cafe & learning from work mates & friends. Manage to get home safely though, stalled couple of times now & then, shift into wrong gear, jerky up & downshifts, not getting the bite point right, ect… but overall this channel did help me manage my confidence & I’m now able to drive my GR86 Manual with little a bit of improvement. I’m still not perfect, but I’m learning everyday & I’ll continue to use this channel as a reference & improve my skills at a steady pace. Really appreciate your hard work Richard, keep it up.
I hear that drivers who take an automatic test in NSW are now given a manual licence (without taking a manual test) when they upgrade to their green Ps after 12 months.
I got my license 2 months ago but your videos played an important role,so thank you Richard And Emily I can't wait seeing you improving and getting better and better. love you 👋
These videos are so great as I can make notes of mistakes I make while driving, without the stress of driving at the same time. It is amazing to be able to reflect like this before a lesson and bring a list of things I actively want to work on!
I love how she matched her socks with her nail polish lmao. Its so interesting to see someone learn and go through all of the improvements. When i started out though, my instructor just said: “Lets get out on road!”, on the first lesson… It was definitely scary but ended up being a lot easier than i thought. Driving is fun man.
I passed last week with 7 minors, I was a little disappointed in my minors but a pass is a pass and I was so happy with myself after leaving it until I was 35 to finally do it. Thanks for your videos, they helped me throughout my journey! Good luck everyone.
I can't thank you enough for the amazing driving lesson videos you've provided. Your clear instructions and helpful tips really made a difference in my learning journey. Keep up the fantastic work, and I'll be sure to recommend your channel to others looking to become confident and skilled drivers.
From the US and I just wanted to say I watched so many of your videos before I bought my car. Helped me so much to understand how long to hold on the bite point. And I learnt so much about my car. Tysm!! 🎉
Emily, thank you so much for agreeing to be filmed. As a learner driver myself, these videos are so helpful! And Richard, thank you for being such an amazing teacher and explaining things so well!
I’m in the same situation as Emily and watching her is so refreshing! Glad I have these videos whiles I’m in the similar situation! Also she’s is so good on the camera!
you are probably one of the best if not the best teacher I saw online. I know you like what you're doing and have a passion for cars. keep doing this please, there are a lot of learner who still struggle with basic things because of poor explanation, and you can explain everything super easily. I'm here more to learn about fuel economy and optimal driving but it's always nice to see new "pilots" improve. ty for your work 🤟💪
Hello there, I am learning to drive an automatic but I still watched your videos to get an idea on approaching junctions. Your a really great teacher and I will continue to watch your videos as I am learning. Sometimes I drive to near the curb but I have used this and some other videos to learn how to position myself better. Thank you for sharing these videos, this is what RUclips is made for :)
Hey! I just wanted to thank you for your content. They've helped me a lot, I think I've learnt much more from you than I did from my instructor. I've passed my test a week ago with 1 minor fault. I'll keep watching as I want to master the things in your "Advanced driving" playlist as well. 😌
I noticed at the begining Emily was very wary of speeding up before changing up to 2nd gear, but then later she got it moving to change up, you said not so fast, but that showed me she was getting confidence in her ability to control the car more, but she did really well, also the junction where she was going to do it wrong for the camera, she stopped herself at the last minute, but she showed the confidence and ability to control the car again, I think she will be a fast learner, she listens and thinks.
Thank you so much Richard and a big shout out to Emily for agreeing to do these videos. It helps so much. Can you please compile it in order so it is much more helpful for new learner’s.
This has been incredibly helpful for me. One of my biggest fears as a learner which has led to a lot of rushing, is that if I don’t have my clutch in as soon as I slow down; I’ll stall. (It comes from stalling on my first ever junction and being beeped at and then tailgated, although I’ve never stalled on the road since)- I first started learning in a 2005 Vauxhall Tigra which was much easier as you really could hear everything and you had to apply much more pressure to the pedals anyway, but I’ve now bought a 2023 Corsa which is much more sensitive and quiet so that fear of stalling at junctions has been super high and led to me going faster than I should. So being able to get a better gauge of how slow the car can go before the break is needed but also how slow it can go before the clutch is needed is really useful.
I've started to use the phrase 'Manage/control your speed with the footbrake.' once the clutch is down approaching junctions. It helps eliminate braking too soon. I'm converted to walking/jogging/running - thanks Richard, so much more practical than bothering the speedometer. I'm also keen on choosing your gear when you take your foot off the brake at junctions, including roundabouts. I'm pretty certain that guessing the gear is wrong at least 50% of the time. We take our foot off the brake when we've decided it's safe to go and so the car stops slowing down, except uphill. At that point, we can select the appropriate gear and slide the clutch back up to go. Obviously, if we slow to a walk at any time, it's straight into first. How many times has a pupil asked you 'What gear?' approaching an open roundabout and then continue braking? As John always says, 'If you don't know, don't go.' An undecided pupil is sat there, foot jammed on the brake. Time to assist!
Good that you teach moving off fast, My instructor never did in fact taugh me to use gas only. Always ignored him and did gas anyway lol and has paid off because car now 1.6 astra needs gas 100 percent
Pulling away fast is essential for roundabouts and junctions my instructors car is like a rocket but my car.... well lets just say ive gotta really rev it to get it to move quick 😂😂
A really interesting thing about any new skill being trained is how much more you progress at it by sleeping. I remember I tried to learn juggling three days in a row four hours each of those days. My record was only like catching 5 balls. The next morning I got like 50 on the first try. Basically I got the skill from processing the training in my sleep. I think many who learn to drive might get the same surprise at their next lesson if they can recall their last one
Maybe one day off road, here is some fun in my MX5, no handbrake needed as it was slippery: ruclips.net/video/VXkFkYWhK8o/видео.htmlsi=4W7lg476XqD0hyJz
Watching this is very good as even-though I have only had my licence for 2 years you easily forget how the basics feel for learner drivers. Just using the clutch only could present problems when driving a petrol car
It would be very helpful if you made a series with ALL lessons of a given learner. From complete beginner to passing the test. There are so many things my teacher doesnt explain and while you cover a wide variety of topics, i can't know what i don't yet know, if that makes sense.
I think the easiest way to describe coasting would be when going down a hill and the vehicle is just rolling without input. Like riding a bike without peddling.
I don't want to sound weird, but I watched the video for pure pleasure. It may be a form of insanity, I don't care: I just enjoy listening to good instruction and coaching, and Richard is an excellent teacher. But the video wouldn't be nearly as pleasant if Emily weren't Emily. And she's so extremely likeable with her light self-criticism, light self-irony, and a bit of minxish humour, especially when she says that she's acting in front of the camera though she seems to be perfectly natural and free from any pretense. Also, she has a brilliant focus and is really sensible for somebody her age, in my opinion. A big thank you to her again for letting us watch her lesson and big congras for remaining so unperturbed by the presence of the cameras! Just one more thing. I don't know if anyone else has noticed how excellent Emily's handling of the steering wheel is, considering she's still a very novice driver. When I think of student-drivers I've seen, even those at a more advanced stage of training, images of people fumbling with the wheel in the jerky performance of the prescribed push-and-pull motion spring to my mind. Nothing of that sort when it comes to Emily! She might still get her aim and her focus on the car positioning off on occasion, but she has absolutely no trouble in putting in the steering angle she wants when she wants it, in one smooth gesture. Impressive!
Passed my manual driving test today, 1 week of practice took 4 classes .Dont worry guys just trust your instincts and be confident, exam nerves are there but you will be fine. Btw these videos helps in helping you with your judgment.
1:01:14 Maybe not as relevant in this case, but that was my concern when I was new driver reversing an artic on a bay while other lorries were waiting for me. That was holding me back until I "realized" that concentrating on the maneuver instead of them waiting will make things easier for both of us.
I'm doing my test beginning of November and starting my lessons in two weeks. My instructor has only booked one 2 hrs lesson sofar. I used pass me fast, hopefully the instructor has more open slots because I paid for ten hours.
Damn I just started getting lessons on the 9th of September and I haven’t even booked my test yet. 💀 Anyway, I hope you pass! Best of luck. You’ve got this. 👍
Hi Richard, great video as always. I'm wondering if you have any advice for young instructors, as i know you started fairly young. I'm 23 and will be applying for my pink badge at the end of October after recently passing my part 2. I'm worried that I may not be taken seriously by my pupils because of my age.
08:45 That seems so be a recurring optical illusion. Once you stop after having moved forward for a while, you might get the impression of rolling backwards very slowly.
I am so jelous Emily has an instructor like yourself, you break things down in such a digestable and non-overwhelming way for an anxious driver. I wish my instructor took a similiar approach.
Really interesting videos! ❤ Did Emily passed her driving test? I'm super curious😊 I feel like I am just like her, but with exercises I hope the way I drive will be much more smooth... Thank you so much for the videos! Some instructors don't really explain in detail like you do, and some lose patience, like you're supposed to already know and do everything good... 😅
Emily, if you read this, thanks for doing this! This is a great and really entertaining series because of you. It's been quite some time since I got my license and it's so much fun to see the learning curve we all have had. And many thanks to Richard for filming his work, of course, too! I'm a teacher in a different field of work but I think you're an incredible teacher. I could write a lot about why but the video speaks for itself!
Yeah that's true, I was thinking the same...
Happy to say I passed a few weeks ago with only one minor mark! Thank you for making these videos free and easily accessible for all.
That's great to hear! Thank you for watching and congratulations on passing!
Don't worry Emily (if you look at these comments), we all make mistakes. I remember driving the wrong way up a one-way street during the lesson before my test. Scared my instructor to death; then passed the test with only 2 minor faults 😂 You're doing really well overall. Keep up the good work!

August 2024: Man, you deserve some award. You are a good teacher. Thanks Emily for accepting to do this video.
I love how you teach, all the time smiling, not yelling, everything is in happy mood, love it .
My son passed his test yesterday with only 2 minors, taught by me for the last 6 months. Your videos have been so helpful. Thank you 👍
That's fantastic to hear! Congratulations to your son!

Watching this is very good as even-though I have only had my licence for 2 years you easily forget how the basics feel for learner drivers. Just using the clutch only could present problems when driving a petrol car
Loved the Mario kart guess 😆
Awesome progress, keep up the good work!
It would be very helpful if you made a series with ALL lessons of a given learner. From complete beginner to passing the test. There are so many things my teacher doesnt explain and while you cover a wide variety of topics, i can't know what i don't yet know, if that makes sense.
I'm starting to understand why lots of people in Italy aren't great drivers :')) my teacher just made me drive up to 3rd gear on the first day
Passed my test 4 weeks ago....1st time with 2 minors 🎉
Congratulations on passing!
A great vedios as always 💕 Thanks.
Also thanks for Emily.😙🌹
I think the easiest way to describe coasting would be when going down a hill and the vehicle is just rolling without input. Like riding a bike without peddling.
coasting is when you being cool just chilling
The first five or so manual lessons can be painful lol but she's doing great!
Impressive!
"Good to see u havent ran away"
Her last video was 3 months ago 😂that aged well
0:32 Richard's got Jim Carrey's smile. 😅
Passed my manual driving test today, 1 week of practice took 4 classes .Dont worry guys just trust your instincts and be confident, exam nerves are there but you will be fine. Btw these videos helps in helping you with your judgment.
That's fantastic news! Thank you for watching and congratulations on passing!
Anyway, I hope you pass! Best of luck. You’ve got this. 👍
@@AlbertWesker1960. hope you get a pass first test
Right now, the hardest thing about passing is not the learning curve, but getting a test slot 😂
Omg I love her peachy coloured hair 🥰
I am so jelous Emily has an instructor like yourself, you break things down in such a digestable and non-overwhelming way for an anxious driver. I wish my instructor took a similiar approach.
Really interesting videos! ❤
Did Emily passed her driving test? I'm super curious😊
I feel like I am just like her, but with exercises I hope the way I drive will be much more smooth...
Thank you so much for the videos! Some instructors don't really explain in detail like you do, and some lose patience, like you're supposed to already know and do everything good... 😅
we love emily!
