Finally got it up and running. The only delays we had was because we realized we needed some extra parts (I’ll list that below) ruclips.net/user/postUgkxihMYiJNXcHdbH-7ihymsLz61l7jVyb5O . So we have a loft where our current hvac just couldn’t seem to keep cool during the summer. We have been using a window unit since we bought this house over 6 years ago (all the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 80’s and majority of the houses built like ours use a window unit). I hate window units because they are just so noisy and the one we had really only cools one side of the loft. I had contemplated upgrading our current HVAC, but with all the rising prices these days, it would take years before saving up enough to do that. With the advice of my father-in-law (used to run an HVAC business), he recommended we get an inverter instead. We thought we bought everything we needed, but there were just a few other parts we didn’t anticipate needing (which is what caused most of our delay). My friend and father-in-law did all the work to get it installed and running and now we have nice cool air circulating nicely throughout the entire loft. It is very quiet and even the outside unit is much quieter than our main HVAC unit. Saved ourselves thousands getting this.
Just got home from work, perfect timing for a SGHS video.
Great idea but I recommend that you mount the condenser onto the back of the cab instead than on the headache rack. The cab is on air springs and will flex the copper line up down and sideways til it snaps. You should have zero motion between condenser and evaporator.
How about installing under cab using flexible hose lines?
Awesome job!!!!l…love the flag even more……
Why not just chain it on. Seems like a lot of work.
Look at you getting all fancy with the editing. 😂. Great video bud.
Should put some rack lights on there one day, be helpful for night backing and late loading
I saw in the comments that you move the condenser from the headache rack to a cab mount. Did you have trouble with the lines or the condenser. I think I will move mine off my headache rack
nope, worked great after moving to cab. sorry this is late
Your videos are amazing bro . Thanks. God bless you all
Please refer to the video mark 9:05 If you exam this section of the video, you will begin to notice that the woman has green hair. Very interesting.
Guessing the original brackets fell victim to fatigue from vibration and flexing. There's probably some physics formula to explain it, but I slept through that day in class.
Maybe the a/c brackets will do the same!
It may be due to the main truck frame twisting on uneven terrain and engine torque, my best guess. How is fatbutts doing?
I installed one on my 16ft box truck works well
That's actually changing your frequency. It should be 60hz based on speed.
There should be a voltage regulator separate.
That thing is not gonna survive the road beating its gonna get. Fix the truck and run it for heating and cooling. Money ahead and less headaches!
I really like your "Let's go Brandon" flag. Nice touch 👍
Of course the brackets broke
Should have been thicker..
And the side supports should have gone all the way to the top...
If your side support goes below the bottom bolt
The weight will pump on the brackets
That's what broke the old brackets
Hate to say but...that AC unit will not last long, its not made for rough roads and the constant raddling it will receive from the
great roads we drive on.
I think your next purchase should be a head/cap mount for your camera.
Ok. I going to ask. The APU should have also provided a A/C compressor pump. That unit on your chain rack won't last long. Will you be hooking the inside part of the mini system to the APU a/c system?
apu doesnt have a a/c system it acts as a generator only
Nice work I like it
Refrigeration piping is blocking a lot of the airflow
4:56 nice flag!
So it means your APU doesn't have A/C?
I like it i dont know why you care what trolls think fuck them
Dang cliffhanger
I can't figure the electrical out how'd you do yours?
What part are you struggling on? I read the reviews on mine and they mentioned that they have stuff labeled wrong
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot well I noticed you had an apu and I don't got one all I got is the battery's and inverter or a generator so I'm just not sure how I'd go about hooking up the electrical
@@wolfmantrucker1541 put a plug on it and plug it into generator
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot I thought about that but all the plugs that could plug in only have 3 connectors and theirs 4 wires
@@wolfmantrucker1541 my power only has 3. Are you taking about the 4 that goes from outside unit to inside?
If you Guys didn't notice Lita walking around the Back of that Truck at 907 >>Something Wrong With>YOU LOL
You keep promising Mustang videos...I haven't seen one yet. Lita, whack his pinky!
I should have waited for the last two minutes of the show before commenting....I'm Soo sorry, here we go...
Is the 3 or 4 air conditioning units you have installed, would it be more productive do have just fixed the truck ac system?
Are you going to sell your old big Tex trailer?
Did I miss a video after the truck broke down & was to be fix again
yes 1 video back
Damm robert I want to see more....lol
Are you worried about the vibration from road rattle anything and cause issues? Just curious great idea if it is tough enough to last
I was untill I talked to a few people who have done the same. And have lasted for years. And they didnt use the rubber mounts I bought
You are dlocking all the air flow, shorten the line set
i poped the hole. instructions unclear. got my girlfriend pregnant AC still dosnt work
I saw the BIDEN flag and was shocked.. then I read it, fully 😂
It's a butt pipe, not a plastic sleeve
Wasting so much time and money on ac units just buy new apu
So just spend 10-15k? I don't have that kind of money. Plus I get to make content out of this. And show other that also can't afford 10-15k what works and what doesn't.
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot don't get me wrong I definitely like the video's I look forward to them it's just I have been curious about why not buy a new apu
Tell me that's not a biden flag on the front of ur house!
Robert you need to run A/C hose between the two units and get rid of the copper line. The vibration between the two units will crack the copper line or worst the coils in the units.
Been wanting to do something like this with my truck . The only concern I've had is the ac being on the headache rack mounted solid and the truck moving on air bags. Will the lines crack??
I noticed that too it will crack unless they’re rubber hoses which they’re not
I think with the way I coiled the extra line up will help prevent this. And act as a slinky
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot If the lines cracking does become an issue, automotive (hydraulic hose type) flexible AC lines can be made to any length and configuration by any auto AC shop worth its salt
You ended that abruptly, he gone. Never heard how you made out with the truck.
@@capazontwo Part 2 coming....when they remember to upload it
Looks good Robert and I hope it works really well for you and keeps y’all cool. Man I love the “Fuck Biden” flag, lol. That’s awesome!
You shouldn’t set voltage that way. Put your meter on cycles and set to 60 . Find the voltage regulator and set it according to what you need.
What a mess
I really hope this works out for you guys. I always feel so bad when I watch you, Lots and fat butts crushing with the windows down cooking in your rig. Especially with all I’ve seen you guys try and do to just get some kind of ac that just works and stays working for y’all. Best of luck and I’m rooting for you all.
Hey Robert , I just installed one myself on my KW, instead of using the copper lineset that comes with the unit I got a custom R410A rubber hoses made to handle the road vibration. Those copper ones will not last. Also, instead of using those screws to hold the inside unit docking plate I used 4 locking nuts and bolts . It looks nice though.
yeah a few people have suggested to replace the copper lines with rubber. I'll have to look into that before anything happens
Looking to put in a mini split.Where do I get the custom hoses?Because I had one installed on my last truck and the vibration toward the hose in the park
As much $$$ you've sunk in that truck, you could've used for a down payment on a newer and better truck.....
I thought welding truck frames was a major no no?? I could be wrong, but it messes with the temper if I recall.
Also why not just use the AC on the APU ??
frame isnt welded on. Theres 2 flat bars bolted to the frame we welded to.
You are right, but he tacked the new pieces to the uprights that were bolted to the frame, then unbolted it and took it back to his shop to finish welding it.
I was wondering the same thing. This is a generator apu. It’s not like a Thermo King. Why didn’t you just get the Carrier A/C and heat unit that installs under the bed?
God the Jimmy rigging never ends lol. Just when you thought something couldn't be more Jimmy rigged boom you can always count on these two to prove you wrong.
How is installing a mini split in a Semi truck considered jimmy rigging?
Looks legit AF 😎
Haters gonna hate lol
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot I just like to talk crap. I actually love watching all the cool little projects and stuff you guys do lol. You guys do and try the stuff most of us aren't willing to or can't do. Take my crap talking as a show of respect from me lol
@@ScottByeTXI'm just talking crap for people like you to comment for the algorithm. I actually love watching these two and seeing all the fun they get to have while working with each other
I bet that thing lasts about a month. They're not built for the vibration. Not saying it to hate. Fyi they make special ones for RVs that can handle the bumps and vibrations.
Please consider putting a rubber grommet on that electrical line that comes out of the breaker box and goes through the floor. What you did looks ok for a while but if the wire moves, it may eventually rub through the tape and then the wire. Have good days!
Dixie was not first
Damm Robert I will say again that you have a helluva work ethic. It's good that you involved the boys. Missed Lita and Fat Butt. You guys stay safe and healthy. Hope you get a good paying load to help with the time off. Take care. 🙏💕👍🇱🇷
@@ratj4715 in all of his videos he is either driving or working on something that will benefit himself and family. He knows his finances and what he needs to do. As far as drivers being lucky to get home every couple of months that's on them if they work for a company that doesn't care about their drivers. As for myself I drove OTR for 40 years and when I wanted to go home I went. I never thought of myself being married to a truck or company. I very seldom stayed out more than two weeks especially when I was married. When I wasn't married I would stay out several months at a time. Never judge someone if you haven't walked a mile in their shoes.
Ingenuity is a hell of a drug lol ...NO chance that thing operates for more than 1k miles..
I'm not the first to do this. And dont tell my a/c cause its been way over 1k miles
Awesome job. It looks great. I’m almost certain you’ll get years of flawless service. I appreciate your willingness to tackle almost any job. You’ve already proven to me truck repair shops just want your money and head you down the road. I’m addicted
to your channel. Very good content.
I've seen a few comments regarding the copper lines being coiled and how they're going to prevent the oil from returning to the compressor. NOPE! I've installed several of these mini-splits on homes and even the manufacturers recommend coiling the excess at or near the outdoor unit to save the factory flares which are considered far superior to most flares that an installer can make on site. That's why the line-sets come in fixed lengths with both ends having flares and fittings preinstalled. It's a misconception that oil is returned to the compressor by gravity. It is not. It is carried by the freon.
Why don't you go get 4 U bolts for your rack You can use threaded rods and plates. Just saying
We just put a RV AC unit on the roof of the sleeper
Super simple
What kind did you buy? How does it perform and is it simple enough to install yourself without having AC knowledge?
Now I have never installed something like that. But I would try and mout it to the cab because the cab moves a lot compared to the frame I think the movement will wear the lines out. And I personally wouldn't weld to the frame. I know you can weld to the side, but I just wouldn't do it. But nice video. I am looking to something similar
That's what I was thinking . Mount to the cab
jesus can we resolve this ac shit its going to be fall in 22 days
Nice welding job. Better than I could do.
Wait what.?? Isn't not better you used a 3000 watts power inverter ( sine wave not square wave) and you forget the headache of using an APU?
I also know this trick where you throw parts and things will just assemble... just never knew it work with parts, i always had to throw stacks of cash on people for this to happen.
There is something wrong with a unit that will not accept 120 volts. First off with today's appliances most will not do well on a modified sine wave. If your apu is not putting out a pure sine wave form expect problems regardless the voltage. Old out of date video.
Geezuus...what a hack job you've done on that poor truck. Why didn't you fix the existing factory A/C? Good luck selling a truck full of 2-3 inch holes in the sleeper.
factory ac is fixed. But would require idling truck to stay cool. Who said I was selling?
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot You literary said if you sold the truck or whatever, you would take that A/C unit off the truck. And yes I know you would have to idle the truck for the other A/C but they normally only use a gallon an hour maybe. That thing you installed was never designed to be a mobile otr solution. It's gonna go tits up in no time. You maybe shoulda had a roof mounted RV unit installed.
@@blueovaltrucker How would you mount an RV AC unit on a sloped roof Einstein?
@@blueovaltrucker so at 1 gallon an hour x $3.15 a gallon. 8 hours a night 30 days a month, is almost $800? Plus wear and tare on your engine. This pays for itself in 1 month. I get content from it (which pays me btw) , plus I get to show people what works, and what doesnt. also you cant put an rv ac on a full top semi because it would be to tall. I'm not the first to do this btw. 100's of truck on the road have done this.
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot Gotta give credit where credit is due; you’ve certainly become a leading expert on showing all of us over the years on what doesn’t work.
The warranty is only honored if the unit is installed by a professional HVAC guy and electrician if not the warranty is not valid
Best part 9:06 when lita comes out.
it says home right on the unit do they make one that says truck on it..
I'd like know how this is holding up any problems with the lines over the years.
Good idea but I don’t see it lasting long flying down the road
I always soap bubble the flare joints when checking for leaks. Also leaving copper coiled up may cause oil return problems. Eventually leading to failed compressor. I am wondering if the error code was caused because the valves at the condenser were not open. Compressor tried to run and caused some sort of voltage drop. Due initial current draw. (LRA) i do ac down in fl if anything i can help just ask.
It looks like a Mini split up on that headache rack👍
Question ❓
Why didn't you look at the unit that was for a semi ?
It was on ebay. You could get 12 volt or 24 volt unit. It's was a smaller than that house unit you installed.
Yes it's a bit more money but it's for the back wall of a semi ! And it works off the batteries.
Your batteries are charged by you APU .
Or maybe looked for a APU that is an A/C system and a generator ?
( Which mounted under the bed and thru the floor for the hoses and wires )?
. But it's a bit late now.
I hope the vibration and pot holes from the highway doesn't beat it or shake it to pieces !
Is that unit a 120v or 220 v ??
Good luck
Those are not worth a flip truck will have to idle for long periods of time to charge the batteries. Best thing to do is a ac like this or a small window unit being ran off of a generator. Espar heater for the winter or a Chinese equivalent.
Hello from Iowa. I found your channel cause I'm going to pit Mini split on my semi. How is yours working year later. What make and model did you purchase..... I have been Trucking for 28 years. Got cdl at 18 and bought my first semi at 18 and did in state till I was 21. Lol I've went back to your first video 4 years ago and remembering the struggle too.. keep up the good work. Lol I'm watching all your videos from your first 1 at night on my 10 break..
Knock on wood still doing good. Don’t mount to headache rack. Put it on the cab for the air ride
Set the rpm of the engine right? Requires a specific rpm to maintain the 59.97hz.
yes the rpm of the engine determines the voltage on this one. Some use some type of voltage regulator. This one does not
No warranty when not installed by licensed hvac tech. I've installed about 10 of these never had a problem except for leaking freon after a few years.
Just wondering if that ac unit will put up with the vibration and jurking that will be put on it, attached to a semi?
I'm hoping with air ride and the rubber blocks it will be ok. Time will tell I suppose ☺️
It will be fine. I put one in my fifth wheel works great 👌
I know this video is a year old but got some questions. First how is it holding up? I plan on doing this and removing my carrier hvac system and just using the generator to power it. How does it cool when it's 100 outside? I'm planning to use the flex rubber lines.
My next question is did you remove the whole under the bed hvac unit? I would love to get that room back...
This is still doing great. Mount to cab not headache rack. I left the unit under the bed. It cools the back of the truck great when it super hot out. But you will need to put some window shades in to help the front.
If I'm not mistaken..... I believe it has been you that kept telling everyone that this was not a option, I know nothing about installing this on a truck...but I'm pretty sure you told everyone they were stupid for suggesting this option.. But if I spent all those dollars on walmart AC and cheap inverters I would be a bit more humble,,,but that's just not in your cards,,,sorry just saying!!!!!!!
Everyone suggested RV style. The ones that go on the roof
Solid copper line with that thing mounted on head ache rack I’d be worried bout the flex and snap those lines
Hope it's working out. Great job welding, mechanic , truck driver, cable TV I'm guessing you was a great brick Mason
Have you got chains holding your headache rack on? There is no way that would pass a DOT inspection in my hood. I hope I never have to follow you on the highway. Call your insurance agent and pickup a million dollar umbrella policy you might need it.
You know I chain backhoes and heavy equipment with chains right?
Best. Way is to buy 680 kw new one w every apu loading
Next video
“Worst AC unit ever it fell off the f***ing wall”
I’ve figured out you do theses things just for video content. Good luck!
I can't see that lasting long, Shaken isn't something they are made for.
I'm coming over so you can help me put one up , when can I come ?
Robert all the experts with engineering degrees 😂
Did those copper lines stand the test of time? About to install one of these on my rig and wondering if I should replace the copper as one of the commenters suggested.
Lines are doing fine. The first time we did this we attached to headache rack and that killed it. It now lives on the back of the cab on air ride. And is still doing great! Copper lines and all. Just keep them tied up.
If you done that, you're smart.
Man hope it work's out for you two ya got to have AC . That is the coolest power unit i've ever seen 👍👍🇺🇸
BEST OF LUCK YOUR VIDEO'S ARE FUN TO WATCH...
I have one ran in my truck and i haven't had not one issue
Man I hope u see this comment I'm thinking of doing the same thing but I don't have a apu so I'm thinking to run it off a inverter think it could work?
no, use a generator atleast
The fire proof cardboard … where did ya get it … Lowe’s 🤷🏻♂️
its from CHINA
We have a problem with the a/c.....No shit.
Surprisingly the DOT hasn’t complained about the chains ⛓
What about treaded rod and flat stock to mount down the headache rack instead of the chains ⛓
Better put a cover over it when not using ..so the fan don't turn...not a know it all .just saying ..looks good
Everyone other than him is a know it all according to him
It won’t last not designed for trucks, you need a truck mounted ac unit which is designed for trucks
😂😂
Winter is almost here , he still fixing ac..🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's gonna be in the 90's all week. This also heats btw :P
It's still nice to have in the winter if he runs south.
Should have some orange cones out by your trailer
