It is so much easier to learn when the subject thought is laced with good humor. Great jog!!!! and thank you so very much for the lesson.

Nicely done, Boats! In the tugboats I still see plenty of monkey’s fists. More recently I’ve seen them filled with either sand bags or just a ball of used duck tape then often dipped, repeatedly in paint to add weigh (which if not smoothed makes a thorny ball of pain like being hit in the face with a ball of razor sharp barnacle). But, occasionally I’ll find a deckhand trying to use large nut, bolt, or large ball from a bearing as a core. Not so nice for the guy on the dock. I’ve seen longshoremen cut off a fist that sounded too solid when hitting the dock. I haven’t seen any regulation against such cores but I know after nearly being hit by a lead ball off a foreign ship that this is just an u safe idea. As a traditionalist of marlinespike seamanship I scoff at the rubber balls but they are easier, safer, and effective.

Thanks, Bryan! It means a lot hearing from another salty mariner.
