Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What if I had one summer job, how would I list that?
------Here is my video on how to write a resume with experience: • How to Write a Resume ...
What if I have never done any volunteer work or any extracurricular activities ?
-------Have you attended religious services? Experience baby or dog sitting ? Have you taken any AP courses or received any honors? It can be experience from middle school as well. Any programs you’ve done? Cleaning, moving or landscaping etc. you can list the family's name that you provided services for and what skills the job entails, such as organization, communication, etc.
What if I have my own small at home business, how would I add that on my resume?
-------You can put your business name, city & state, your title/position and then bullet points about what you do & the skills you have gained
Where can I create my resume?
-------On Microsoft Word or Google Docs
Do I create this from scratch or use a template?
-------I recommend creating it from scratch because it is easier to make changes.
What if your homeschooled? Can you still get a job?
-------Definitely! You can include any community or leadership activities, awards/scholarships, honor societies, academic teams/competitions/summer programs/workshops, volunteer work, certifications/licenses etc.
How can I fit all of my experience on one page?
------Use a header and/or footer to created more space on the page
What if you didn't finish high school but have a GED?
------You can list your General Educational Development Diploma (GED) with the month and year received under your education section. Just as you would your HS diploma.
Do internships go under volunteering?
-----You can put it under there or create another heading labeled "Internship Experience"
I have certificates in python programming, app software, etc from courses I took online. Do I write those down as skills?
-----Yes, you can put them under the heading "Skills/Certifications"
Can I still put my volunteer experience if I did it in middle school but not high school?
-----Yes, you can add volunteer experience, clubs, programs, etc. from middle school
I just graduated high school so should I put the college I’ll start at in the fall?
-----Yes, with your expected graduation date (month and year)
Can I use this for college applications too or just for jobs?
------Both!
I don’t have any volunteer work yet or extracurriculars, can I list where I plan to volunteer in the future?
------No, did you participate in or receive any for the following: community or leadership activities, awards/scholarships, honor societies, academic teams/competitions/summer programs/workshops, volunteer work, certifications/licenses etc
What if I’m attending High school what do I put there on the diploma side?
------You still put your high school, the diploma you are planning on getting and the expected month and year you will be graduating, even if it is in the future. For example, June 2024
Do I need to put objective at the top of the resume?
-------Instead of an objective I would recommend a summary of statement. A summary statement is a short paragraph with specific qualities you bring to the job. For example, "High-energy student able to work hard and take initiative to complete tasks. Developed leadership, maturity, responsibility, creativity and decision-making skills needed to thrive in a rigorous academic background. Ability to communicate well with people of all ages."

This is great. I'm an English teacher in France and I will be using this in my class tomorrow. Thanks!
That makes me so happy to hear!
All this video did is make me realize how little I've done in my life
It’s all about how you market yourself! You can make a little sound like a lot but if you can do more that will be good as well
@@LifeCoachYvette this was so helpful thank you so muchhhhhh girl
Same
Same
Real
All this did was make me realize:
1. How little achievements I have.
2. I have no volunteer experience
3. I did little to nothing extracurricular activities. All I can think of is that I developed and distributed my middles school news-letter along with the rest of the people that did that, and that I helped the librarian check in and out books, logged computers, and logged new books.
3. My resume is very, very short.
Would Honor Course go on the resume? Ive taken Honors English 1 & 2.
But other than that, this video helped me make a very short resume.
#3 is experience. Sometimes we downplay what we have done but it’s all about marketing. You can definitely put those two experiences as well as honors on your resume. For the library position, you can research the job responsibilities of a page in a library. That was my first job as a teenager.
This was so helpful! I am 15 and have no job experience and all of the other videos I’ve watched told me I needed to put down job experience so thank you so much 🙏🏼
You’re welcome!! 😊 best of luck
what did u put for the highschool diploma part?

This is so important! A lot of people don't know how to put together a resume!
Yes! Most times ppl think they don’t have the experience but they do..it’s all about how you market yourself

This is the video I was looking for 😢thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
This video is amazing! I actually based my resume off of this video. I followed this step by step, and it really paid off! I have only two concerns. The first one is that along with the volunteer work, I've been a caretaker to my mother, who has many health problems, at home. I've been helping her around the house with meals and cleaning, I've been paying the rent every month, and I've done the laundry on Saturdays and shopping on Sundays. It's not volunteer work or a paying job, but I've been carrying out these tasks to help her out since June of 2022. How can I put that on my resume? I've been looking online for help on this issue, but with no luck. The other issue is that my resume is now 2 pages long, and I'd have to take off most of what I've written to make it a one-page resume. I would've done my resume on Microsoft Word, but my laptop is a Chrome Book and it doesn't support that, plus it's expensive and I don't have the money for it, so I could only do it on Google Docs. What should I do?
Quick, easy and to the point!

Little late to this but I have a question! I'm currently going to an online homeschooling academy and I'm struggling to figure out what I should put as my high school education. Please help!!
Thank you!!
You’re welcome 😊
Hi Yvette! Thank you so much for this video, it is the most helpful one I've seen! I just had a quick question, if you got an acheivement/award over 5 years ago, would you include that in the resume, or is that too far back? Also, I think you have a super calming voice, I love to listen to you speak lol
Awww thank you ☺️ no, it’s not too far back. As long as it’s relevant or if you’re using it as a space filler than it’s fine. Awards/achievements can’t be taken away, you’ve earned it.
@@LifeCoachYvette ok perfect, thank you!!
for the education part what if your in you are in the process of getting your high school deploma what would you put?
You would put your expected graduation month and year
Few questions, I currently work as a COO and GFX designer for a very small org. Would those be things that I would put under work experience or no? And my second question is, I’m currently about to graduate from HS but for the last semester I transferred from high school over to an adult education school to finish my requirements for grad, would I put both my last and current school or just the current one?
Hey
I believe you can put that you worked for a COO and GFX as part of your skills (you can put the apps you used to work on those jobs as part of the software you are skilled at) or job experience.
Plus yes I think it’s a good idea to put both your old and current schools, please just be sure to add the dates from which you attended that school to the date you stopped attending and of course add the certificate,s diplomas, etc that you hot from those schools.
what do we do if we have really bad school attendance, and the reasoning being is that you have trouble with learning and the teachers did nothing to help you, and you have really bad grades? (and i mean really BAD grades, only thing I'm good at is HPE). (I'm 15 by the way).
If I have extra room in my paper, is that ok or how should I fill it in? also should I state somewhere that I have no prior work expirence?
Fill it in with relevant information. There’s things you can add that I consider space fillers for ex. a “profile” or “summary” section where you highlight your skills and interest. You can also add AP classes, honors/awards/certificates, etc.
what did i put for the highschool diploma part f im still in highschool (going to 11th)
You put high school diploma on the left and on the right your expected graduation date (month, year)
What if I don’t volunteer?
Its 3am and im here writing down that I assisted in tracking inventory as valenteer work, when all I did was go to my mom's work wheb i was 10 and go around scanning product barcodes to help her. Really scraping for stuff on this resume
This makes me so proud! 🥲🥲
hey, thank you for this very helpful video! i just had a question, maybe it’s silly, but when u put in the month and a year for the volunteer, you also added “-Present”, is it as you were present on that day, or is it as “until now”?
Until now. You can put the end date just like you would for a job
Can you make a video on how to write a resume with no skills and volunteer experience
Very informative 🤗 nice video
Thank you! ❤️
Can I make the fonts smaller? I got a huge resume as of the moment 😩
Yes, I do 11.5 font size. Also the header and footer should help. And remove things that aren’t as relevant anymore
hi :) so if im a high school dropout working toward my ged (im 17) what do i put for school? do i put down the last school i attended?
Yes you can put the last school and the dates attended and then also GED spelled out with the acronym in parentheses and the expected completion date in the future
I have a unique situation because my professional skills teacher says to put in any college courses that I'm enrolled or that I've taken, which I am not sure how to implement. But I'm only sophomore so do I put the chemical technology degree that I'm working towards or my regular high school diploma?
Great question! You can list the college separately and indicate your non-degree status. By taking classes at a college in high school, you now have a transcript but you are not enrolled into a degree program so you wouldn’t put “Bachelors in”
If I'm homeschooled, what should I type out for my school name/schooling? Thank you smm 😩💚
I switched schools entering my sophomore year, do I also have to write down my previous high school? If so, what other information do I write about my previous school (such as gpa, etc.)
No, you don’t have to add it to the education section but you can add any activities/programs from the previous high school to your experience or volunteer sections
If we would want to put down our dog sitting experience where would you recommend putting that in?
Under work experience if it was paid or under volunteer if it wasn’t
This video is awesome
Thank you!
I have done side jobs doing remodeling at peoples houses with my family member would I put experience like that under skills or work experience because I was always paid with cash and didn’t apply because I’ve been doing it since I was like 12 and I’m 15 now so that’s 3 years
Definitely work experience! Your job title can be contractor. The company name can be your family member’s company name or if they don’t have an official company, you can put the family you worked for. For example, “Johnson’s Family, Houston, TX, Contractor, dates and bullet points”
i have nothing to fill out for half of the page should i just make some up
Do you have any programs from middle school? Honors, awards, certificates? AP courses? Also, the National CPR foundation allows you to get your BLS certificate for $15. The course is only a few mins. If you can complete it, you can add it under skills/certifications
What if I have my own small at home business how would I add that on my resume??!
Great question! You can put your business name, city & state, your title/position and then bullet points about what you do & the skills you have gained
Hey I’m in Oceanside but CA! the only other Oceanside in the country also thank you
Oh wow! Lol I completely made it up. You welcome!
Hello, if I was invited to join the beta club, can I include that under achievements even if I did not accept the invite?
No, you cannot. Only groups and activities you participated in
Can extracurriculars activities can they be stuff that I already since I went to two different school. Do I have to still be involved in it now as a rising senior? Some of the stuff I’m going to be doing.
No, you don’t have to be currently participating in those activities. You can still put them on your resume for the time frame you were an active member
Can I put a school field trip were I volunteered, even though it was only for a day ?
Yes, for the dates only put the month it was in and year
thank a lot
You’re welcome 😊
Hii! I’m currently still in school to get my high school diploma what do I put?
You can put your school name, location (city and state), diploma and expected graduation date (month and year)
If i did extracurricular activities when i was in elementary school should I put them?
No, I would say the furthest back would be middle school unless you continued the activity in middle school as well
ty
You’re welcome :)
Currently need this to go to Disney world
What if i do not know what diploma I'm getting?
You can put high school diploma
Where can I learn computer skills specifically on Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Do I need to get a certificate in order to write on my resume?
Google got some too, although for the official certification you'll most likely need to pay full access for learning and receiving the certification through these websites
Don't know, I took a Computer Application course my first year of highschool, that is exactly what that class was for. They didn't hand out any certificates.
Wht if you forgot the dates you attended the volunteer work ??
You can estimate the month & year. Also see if you have any email, letter, certificate, etc. that can help remind you
nobody finna talk about how she shared her address to everyone
That’s not my address
What about the one without volunteering tho
Did you participate in any activities in high school or middle school? Any clubs, programs, teams, etc?
What if you've never done any volunteer work or have any extra activities ? then what do we do?
Do you have any religious affiliations? Experience babysitting? Have you taken any AP courses or received any honors? It can be experience from middle school as well. Any programs you’ve done?
@@LifeCoachYvette I've baby sat for some of my family members or dog sat, but I havent taken any ap classes or programs
That's perfect! Both can be put on your resume. You can put the family's name where you would put company and location. Then for the bullet points, write what you did and the skills you gained. For ex. "ensured the proper care of two dogs based on instructions provided by owners"
Couple of questions:
1) Would it be okay if to add in work experience from a job I've only worked for 2 days? It is the ONLY real work experience I have ever had in my life, but for the fact that it's been a couple days before I resigned makes me wonder if it'd be a bad idea to add it in.
2) Can some of these sections be completely removed? I specifically don't want to add in just the volunteer work section because I have 0 volunteer experience, nothing for school or my community unfortunately.
No, I would not recommend putting the job that you were at for only 2 days. It wouldn’t be a good look. Also, did you participate in any programs in middle school? Ever babysat family members or dog sat? Sometimes you may have experience that is non traditional that can still count.
@@LifeCoachYvette Yes, I was a pet sitter for my sister's dog! I'll try to incorporate that into my resume. Thank you so much for your reply~
What if I’m attending High school what do I putthere in the diploma side.
Great question! You still put your high school, the diploma you are planning on getting and the expected month and year you will be graduating even if it is in the future. For example, June 2024
@@LifeCoachYvette Thank you also do I need to put objective at the top of the resume
@@LifeCoachYvette and if so what should I write I’m a high school student with no experience...
Instead of an objective I would recommend a summary of statement.
What if i dont have volunteering experience?
Have you participated in any activities or programs in middle or high school?
Grt video
Thank you!
I volunteer for a political campaign. How do I list that in the Volunteer??
For the company, you can list the person or party, location (city & state) then for position it would be campaign volunteer, dates on the right and bullet points listing out your responsibilities and the skills you gained from them.
Sorry if these questions are silly, I'm just curious
1. Over one summer I took care of my neighbor's pets while they were on vacation, I was wondering if that's a valid experience to gain skill from?
2. I have volunteered at different food drives before, though I only spent a day at them. Would it be alright to add one or the experience in general?
Other than that my resume is already looking good, thank you so much!! 🙏🏽
1. Definitely! For company name you would put their last name for example The Jackson’s family residence, city & state, pet sitter/dog walker and bullet points
2. It depends if you need to use it as a space filler. If you have enough experiences to fill up your resume I would say to leave it out or you can group it under company name Various food drives, city and state, volunteer, & bullet points. One of the bullet points can highlight your research to find food drives and identify a point of contact to initiate volunteer experiences
@@LifeCoachYvette thank you!! I appreciate this reply so much!
I was your 1k subscriber
Thank you so much!
@@LifeCoachYvette I Dm you on insta this is my main account
I don’t have any volunteer work yet or extracurriculars, can I list where I plan to volunteer in the future?
No. Were you in any programs in middle or high school? Were you ever paid for completing a task?
@@LifeCoachYvette I’m currently in two programs but I haven’t been paid for a task, do I just list those?
Yes, definitely! What are the programs?
@@LifeCoachYvette scholars programs
Perfect, so you can write scholars program, your school, the dates, and your position which could be Active Participant, Participant, etc. or if you were called something else. Then for the bullets, you can provide details like "Selectively chosen to participate in ..."
please add a template, it would make it much easier.
Ok, will do!
Could i write down that I'm a gym leader
Yes, definitely and the responsibilities of one
What if i havent done any volenteer work or extra activites
Have you attended religious services? Experience baby or dog sitting ? Have you taken any AP courses or received any honors? It can be experience from middle school as well. Any programs you’ve done?
@@LifeCoachYvette would genral labor work?
Definitely! Cleaning, moving or landscaping etc. you can list the family's name that you provided services for and what skills the job entails..such as organization, communication etc.
