  • This is a prototype 'Intonarumori'. It's a first attempt, I'm using a tambourine as a sound box, but it's difficult to get enough tension into the string without damaging the skin. This model uses a G mandolin string, I've tried 6E accoustic wire wound guitar string too and it gives a better 'howl', The wood wheels are not perfectly round either, so I get a cyclical effect to the sound, I'm not sure if that's good or not!!

@fiattrickbox No, i thought up the cookie tin idea as I replied to your comment. I am in the middle of creating my second Intonarumori and I intend to find a tin that fits in the same hole as my 8" tambourine to test my theory. I'd imagine it will sound more metallic. Also, staples and other things can be pushed into a wheel to create a beat. Squares and other shapes are also fun, especially when stacked.

I know this is an old comment I am replying too. Tambourines are the simplest, cheapest way to get a fairly historically accurate sound. However any stretched membrane should work. Using a flimsy round cookie tin may be worth trying out for a different type of sound. I believe in advancing the possible Intonarumori tone sound pallet.

sounds pretty cool :D I want to make one sometime too. question, are there any alternatives to a tambourine? also what did you use to make the protrusions on the grhowler wheel?
