From the composer:
A Requiem at its core is a prayer for rest, traditionally for the deceased. The five movements of Dan Forrest's "Requiem for the Living" (2013), however, form a narrative just as much for the living-and their own struggle with pain and sorrow- as for the dead. The opening movement sets the traditional Introit and Kyrie texts-pleas for rest and mercy-using ever-increasing elaborations on a simple three-note descending motive. The second movement, instead of the traditional Dies Irae, sets scriptural texts that
speak of the turmoil and sorrow which all humanity faces while yet invoking musical and textual allusions to the Dies Irae. This movement juxtaposes aggressive rhythmic gestures with long, floating melodic lines, including quotes of the Kyrie from the first movement. The Agnus Dei is performed next (a departure from the usual liturgical order) as a plea for deliverance and peace. The Sanctus following it becomes a response to this redemption. The Sanctus offers three different glimpses of the "heavens and earth, full of Thy glory," all of which develop the same musical motive: an ethereal opening section inspired by images of space from the Hubble Space Telescope; a stirring middle section inspired by images of our own planet as viewed from the International Space Station; and a closing section which brings the listener down to Earth, where cities teem with the energy of humanity. The Lux Aeterna which then closes the work portrays light, peace and rest for both the deceased and the living. Christ's words are the answer to the Introit's prayer for rest: "Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

watch the young man's emotional response behind the T solo around 34 minutes in. This is my favorite rendition. Just enough voices, just enough orchestration. I can't wait to perform this again this September. If there was ever a appropriate musical piece for what we've been through this past year, this is it.
From my point of view the best interpretation of this marvellous piece of music. The reduction to just a few instruments give this work a special type of magic! Unbelievable! And the solo voices... OMG!

I am in a synagogue choir, and some of us are singing today with two Catholic choirs at one of their churches, for the families of people who have died in the past year, and for the eleven Jews murdered a year ago today at Tree of Life in Pittsburgh. It is an honor to sing this beautiful piece.
It would be such a Blessing for me to sing with G DS children! Singing Chichester Psalms 2 times 50 years apart in Hebrew was such a blessing! I wish to go to a synagogue once b4 checking out😊! Love!

I keep coming back to this recording of "Requiem for the Living". Such a rare choral sound for such young singers. You must have an amazing music department. Your instrumentalists play with such presence and beauty. Truly a noble and worshipful performance. It takes me to my core and reminds me why I am a musician before my Savior.

This is absolutely the very best rendition I heard so far! Perfect instrument/voice balance, the solo voices came directly from heaven (IMHO Jason Rush as Tenor would have made this sublime, if possible 😉)
The end of the Kyrie sounds like all the angels welcoming someone into Heaven 😭😭😭

When I was a Freshman, my choir professor told me would be doing this work at the fall concert. I had never sung a requiem in my lifetime, but was willing to take on the challenge. At the time, I was disapointed I didn't get into Bob Jones because that's where my heart was and still is. When he told me to listen to the BJU Corral, I was amazed. I looked it up on RUclips, and I must say I closed my eyes and imagined I was taken up into Heaven. The performance was very uplifting and encouraging. I pray I can some day achieve a masters degree at BJU if it be God's will. Your music groups are the most amazing and loving people I have ever known in my lifetime.

Most Impressive performance! Even though it says here on RUclips it was performed 7 years ago. I had not ever heard of this Requiem until back in February of this yea, when I first saw this piece..
I am a member of the Montgomery County Choral Society in Conroe Texas. We will be performing this piece on Monday May 16th of this year.
Through the years I have sung nearly every major Requiem that's been written. I even sang in the Houston Choral Society for about 4 years.
I have been singing since I was in the 1at grade mostly in the Methodist Church, and here at age 72 I'm still goin Strong, don't plan on slowing down anytime soon, and can't wait to perform this piece.
As for the young man that sang the Tenor solo, all I can say is Outstanding Performance! I'm a 1st tenor. So I can easily relate to his tone and how he sung it. Everything was on point.

I don't have the words to express my reaction to this piece other than I'm looking forward to singing it this fall with Greenville Chorale.
He came and performed this at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church (MRPC) it was so good I can't even describe
I much prefer the chamber version of this, you can actually hear all the textures of the choir instead of everyone but the sopranos being drowned out by a full orchestra. Looking forward to performing this in a couple of weeks, same chamber version
It's been a long time since I have listened to such beautiful music for the soul. When we consecrate ourselves to God and do all things for His glory, He sublimates our efforts.

I never get tired of seeing and hearing this piece. "Sanctus" is my favorite.
I discovered this masterpiece few days ago in a church from the 12th century in a village of Provence in the South of France. A local chorale came in the evening to play the Fauré Requiem and BOOM they played this Requiem from Dan Forrest in Second Part. I was having a headache for few days and nothing could stop it but at the second the Introit was played the pressure in my head was gone (while Fauré didn't work on it!) , I had goose bumps all over my skin and tears about to fall on my face for 40 minutes. So many emotions. Since then, I'm listening to this Bob Jones University version that I like very much everyday.
Interesting that you compare these two requiems with each other. In one of the choirs I am part, we do Faure's Requiem, while the other choir I am part of, we do this "chamber version" of Dan Forrest's Requiem. The latter is by far my favourite ( - but Faure grows on me with each repetition :-) )
I find myself constantly humming or singing a random tune from either of them, probably how my mind is organizing these "files" in my subconscious, hehehe.
But yes, both are extraordinary works, and a joy to prepare, and to perform!
As an Alto1, the Faure requiem GAVE me headaches! We just performed it this past weekend, and I'm glad we're done. Whereas this masterwork, I could sing over and over.

I have delved into this great artistic rendition of the spirit so deeply. I sing with it when I want to. I weep with it when I want to. The epitome of art. This is not about your childhood visions of god. This is about your true inner spirit.

I graduated out of the BJU chorale led by Dr Cook about 28 yrs ago, and I still want to go back! It was a life changing experience. I wept through much of the music we sang. It was powerful then and still delivers today!
This choral and solo writing is simply soul wrenching. I love teaching it, directing it, memorizing it, and performing it live on MARCH 18 in Carefree Az. Thank you DAN!

So touching. My favorite requiem among the pieces from this era.
The Bay Area Chorus of Greater Houston will be singing this Requiem for the Living on May 5, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, Dickinson, TX for a "free" concert of musical healing after the Santa Fe High School attacks and the devastation to our area from Hurricane Harvey. It's so beautiful and I know the audience will love it!

Have just now listened to this for my first experience with this piece. First-rate all around!
Beautiful, extremely moving performance! The thing that touched me most was the way the musicians interpreted the music. Unlike many (some of the top) music schools in the country with talented musicians of mixed backgrounds (atheists, agnostics, non-Christians), these performers projected the true love of Christ in their voices and in their faces. It came through in a most powerfully profound way! I would love to have my choir perform this work someday at my church!
