The lag spike "that nearly killed you" was caused by the game working to spawn in and render 4-500 new items into the game in an instant as Waffles veinmined the silver. That'll happen every time you veinmine silver, copper, or large rocks. Note that you dont have to dig out a thing you intend to veinmine- just hit any exposed part of it and the whole thing will explode (assuming your pick has sufficient durability), including all the portions that were hidden underground. All the appropriate materials will be on the surface, including from the portions that were originally underground, you dont have to go digging them up.
Pickaxes on golems- Yes, you *can* do it, but no it is NOT easy, and not usually worthwhile if you have a mace and a good shield. Much easier to parry its attack and then uppercut it with the mace.
