the cars tuned from factory to run off 87 octane the 5.7 are suggested 89 and the scat packs and srt's 93, its in your owners manual. Get a hand held tuner to change your engines octane to 93 to make more power.
There are a lot of things to consider. How much Premium does the station sell? If the Premium stays in the underground tanks for a long time it looses octane. That’s why sometimes stations will sell Premium at the Regular price. They are trying to get rid of it. You may think you are buying higher octane when you buy Premium when really it’s not. I’ve also found that buying Regular over time without added fuel injector cleaners is bad. I’ve clogged injectors on my order Dodge Durango. That’s what I get for buying Circle K gas for years. Get top tier and I would buy Premium just for added fuel cleaning even if not for octane.
Bullshit. Premium gas is not more powerful at all. Octane has nothing to do with fuel efficiency or power. It has to do with how much compression it can take before it ignites. High compression engines need premium fuel while this v6 will run just as well on regular.
Lol my factory stock 16 sxt gets 6.3 regular gas and I weigh 500 lbs. You should be able to beat my 0-60 time since your like 400 lbs lighter than me homie.
You are right, guy! You've proven that your V6 is just fine with 87 octane regular. Premium is as much as 60-80 cents per gal higher, where I live. You would be wasting money and feeding your ego to run it. My 2013 R/T runs just fine on 87 oct. I can tell that some extra HP is on tap if I run premium, but only noticable if approaching full throttle runs, which I don't do. Again, waste of money!
If you aren't tuned its a complete waste of money. Its all placebo effect its not faster. You have so many variables in your tests that the difference in times is environmental variables. If you wanted to do a better test, do some data logging with something like HP Tuners and watch the timing advance in real time and see what the differences are.
My 19 scat pack Challenger calls for 91. But octane isnt so much about power (in most cases) than it is compression. If you use a Crap octane in a car that calls for higher than you'll end up with multiple detonations in the cylinder and well... Engine knocking sounds. Obviously a different story if you have a tune specifically for higher octane
You do realize you use a different measurement of octane in the Netherlands right? You use the RON figure whereas America uses the average of the RON and MON, 98 is equivalent to 91...
I remember my dad used to always rant and rave about how premium gas makes more difference. I believed him until I got my own car and when I started hanging out with my girlfriends dad a lot who’s a viper mechanic. I’ll never go back to regular gas.
How can a car computer calculate horsepower and torque? I've never seen this done without using a dynomometer. Even the manufacturers use dynomometers to check the output of one of their cars. Think about it. What physical device do you think is on that car to measure these? I think that screen readout is a bogus device.
It's an approximation. An approximate weight for the vehicle is used along with data from an accelerometer. The energy required to accelerate the given mass at the measured rate is calculated and voila you have an appropriate horsepower figure. Seems like magic but once you peek behind the curtain it's very simple.
@@tgrkush maybe. But 10k in mods later its honestly not worth it at that point. Especially if you still dont get a lot of torque out of it which is what really matters
To further elaborate on this, it will, but you need to go have a custom tune done in order to benefit from it. The stock tune is set up for regular 87 octane.
Most likely the opposite since Octane delays combustion, High Octane is to prevent knock on high compression engines. Use only as needed or your wasting your money.
I run Premium on every 2nd tank full and then the first tank of Regular I use a octane booster and injector cleaner and it really makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE in keeping everything clean and open..
I have only run premium gas in my 2020 challenger. But not for anything more than keeping the engine cleaner. Watch some videos on gas and build up on your internals and you will see how much better it is for your car. And yes all new cars come with a knock sensor but using premium fuel will help with combustion to not have to worry about it
Yeah it's not going to make much difference in a V6 car, or even 5.7 for that matter. Unless of course they had mods, such as blowers etc and would be the exception. Now a 6.1 or greater, requires at least a 91 octane rating and would never run anything less in my Challenger SRT8 with 6.1. Especially if ya do any mods, and have a diablo tuner whenever I add anything new to it. Its stock other than basic mods, but am thinking about doing a cam soon and will need to do it all over again. Am also considering doing a blower after that sometime, so it's good to have your own tuner and can make your adjustments whenever you want. Including to an auto trans for firmer shifts, if you like
For better launches and times hold your brakes and launch it at 1800-2000 rpm, on a hot day with nice tires you can get 5.4 - 5.6. My v6 Challenger gets 6.1 so far back before Winter even with old tires on a wet road.
I wouldnt say its needed, but I feel that my charger runs better and Burns cleaner using premium, I think it butns cleaner in the motor to, not so much for HP gains.
Thanks the same situation happened to me. At work I told them I use unleaded on a v6 they were like whaaaat?! You gotta use the premium at least the mid grade. So much more expensive. One of em got v8 challenger with cloth seats I do not envy to much the gas. He does need premium I can at least enjoy lower price for having a v6
@Ohni Starfall My 2016 SXT PLUS recommended 89 octane, mid grade.....but 87 was ok the manual said. Felt NO difference on the but dyno. You can only compare 0-60 times if the tests are at the same temps, same road, same wind speed, same EVERYTHING and then do like 4 runs and AVERAGE it out. If you dont do it this way it wont be accurate.
If this guy had any idea about mechanics he would know you tune the car to what octane fuel you put in your vehicle 91 octane is the best to have for this kind of vehicle you get better gas mileage as well
My 2013 Challenger SXT V6 owners manual recommends 89, I’m not an expert on the different gasoline grades but I just stick with what the owners manual says to be safe? 🤷
Try running it with the pedal commander, in sport plus 2,mode, with premium 93, I get under 5 secs easy. ( 4.5-4.6) ( Hellcat airbox, open headlight mod ,connected tube to lower box k&n panel filter, ) and stock exhaust improves Significantly! No joke!!
I was like why is he so happy about 6.4 most rts get like 5.1 lol I did not know I was watching a v6. Don’t run premium in that car it’s not good for it. Nice car though, good video.
Regular unleaded is not "BETTER" for your cars. If you're car says 87, it does NOT mean its BETTER for your car, only that your car can function with the lower octane rating.
Very unscientific test. If a car is not tuned to use premium , then you are only wasting your money. Even the owner's manual says no more performance gains using premium for no reason, if it only requires regular gas
Premium is better on gas in my opinion. Cleaner, better for the engine. But in order to get all benefits of the fuel? You need a tuner, air intake and cat back exhaust an it will be so beneficial
Great video! You've shown that premium fuel doesn't necessarily equate to better performance. Most newer vehicles have their computers calibrated to perform best with lower octane fuel. I would be interested to see a review where premium fuel is used exclusively for over 1000 miles. I believe that the computers will 'learn', and that the higher octane fuel will provide better performance results. Let us know what you come up with. Again, nice video. Keep up the good work.

(FacePalm) The only difference in gas is octane level. Put what your engine recommends. Putting in other octane levels can hinder the performance of the engine. The only thing you can do is if you want more performance, put about a gallon of E85 in with your regular gas. That will help performance but not something you want to do everything at the pump.
