Consistency and experience played a huge role here. Musetti showed that he can outplay Nole in most balls during the first two sets (example of consistency). However, Nole's high level stretched farther until the end of the match (More prolonged consistency). And that's the result of experience! Great match.
Well said - exactly the point. Add the GRIT (never-give-up attitude) and CLUTCH to prolonged consistency !!! Only Rafa and Nole can overcome such hurdles... no one else !!!
Honestly you can’t have been watching the match thinking Djokovic got even close to his level in the first 2 sets. Credit to musetti for taking the game to him and playing very mature and great tennis! But then Djokovic just seemed to relax and hit bigger, without missing, as we have seen so often. No chance from there on. In a few years, who knows what’ll be
Lol true but that was more than just staying calm. If you look at the score line after the first two sets, it's pretty clear that Nole felt like he should have never dropped those first two sets, and what ensued after that was a beatdown from Nole, both mentally and physically, that Musetti just could not withstand.
Outrageous Novak .always keep nerve calm till the end. When he was two sets down I knew he will comeback stronger and he did it.. world No.1 for a reason

Props to Musetti, 19 years old and playing in his debut Grand Slam, making it to the fourth round and taking two sets from the world No.1 is a big achievement! He is going to do well in the future
Musetti is 19 years old like me and like me next week we have the final maturity exam of high school, the difference is that I'm complaining about the study and other stuff in this moment instead he has played one of the toughest tennis tournament and in the same time he's studying for the exam... 😌😌
This gotta be the most sharp turn around in a match I've ever seen, it's almost like Novak tricked musetti by lying down, and then completely put lorenzo into submission after the 2nd. Musetti wasn't even hurt...(he did run out of gas in the 5th tho, cant blame him, kids 19 and played a 5 setter in his previous round). Just shows that Djokovic is never truly out of a match until you win that match point
@Rio De there's a difference between an injury and your body giving out on you. Musetti's body ran out of gas by the end of 4th, the fatigue might've made him stretch a muscle there in the end of 4th, but he was 100% not hurt in the 3rd. Like it's okay if his body gave out on him tho, ain't no shame in that, he's freaking 19 and played a 5 setter the round before. And of course you can lose like that, have you play tennis, very often you'd see score lines like 6-7,6-1,6-1, it wasn't as if musetti was killing djokovic in the 1st and 2nd, it was obvious djokovic raised his level in the 3rd. I'm big on lorenzo, his future's bright but he's not ready to take out a goat at a slam yet
@Rio De If the roles were reversed and Djokovic had retired you'd be calling him a quitter and a faker. Musetti wasn't injured in the third set and he got creamed. He wasn't injured in the fourth and got creamed. He wasn't injured in the fifth, either. He was tired. Djokovic upped his own game in the third, figured out Musetti's game, and demonstrated the psychological gulf between an all-time great and a talented player with momentum. Wake TF up, asshole.
Everyone who watched that match knows that this kid had an insane match and tournament overall. Massive talent, and definitely what the new era of tennis needs. Also he already has the top 2 shots of the tournament in the previous round.
Musetti played some INCREDIBLE tennis those first two sets. That was definitely his A+ tennis... and it took that just to win the first two sets. Meanwhile, Djokovic went from B- to B+ tennis to start the 3rd... and we all see what happened. This right here shows just how amazing the Big 3 really are. Especially at the Slams when you need to win 3 out of 5. I do think Musetti suffered a slight bump, but his moral was hurt even more because that's what those 3 guys can do.
No we won't. If he reaches that height, he will have bigger sets, bigger comebacks, bigger losses and bigger victories. If he fails to become the superstar, it will be bc he failed to overcome this loss and many like them, bc there will be plenty more.
Lol, you must be kidding... Musetti will be among the greats by winning lucky 2 sets with Djoko's 20+ unforced errors? I think the best thing to remember him is that he CHOKE... He should finish the game but because his ego is so big that he cannot bear it anymore, he retired without any reason...
A lot of people forgot to give Novak the credit he deserved, regardless Musetti was injured or not in the final set, you saw how Novak turned things around from third set, he played cleaner, more aggressive and smarter tactic! Musetti reminds me a lot of Grigor, a lot of potential and promises, but still questionable!
from my point of view he needs too much energy to win points. he is fun to watch but winning 7 matches on 3 of 5 distance you cannot expect to win every single point with a winner miracle. From third set, Nole put on another gear to the game, there wasn't no room anymore for mistakes. he played with more spin, more angle and more weight on the ball while the hopes and energy of the other started to fade. Musetti reminds me more a Gasquet than a Dimitrov. great all around game, but not enough to be a slam champion.
@@ugopiccardougopiccardo9273 I disagree. He has a lot more potential than Gasquet. For one Musetti is an excellent athlete while Gasquet is mediocre. Gasquet has a stylish backhand but not much else in his game stands out. Musetti has good potential on all of his strokes. Have you ever seen Gasquet give Novak the kind of trouble he got from Musetti in the first 2 sets? Musetti needs to work some on court position. He stays too far back. And obviously conditioning so he can maintain the intensity level for 5 sets against top players.
@@kchuk1965 reminds me Gasquet as a guy with an all around game, a strange forehand and a stylish backhand, but you are right to say that he is a better athlete and that he has to work on the position on court. he stays way too far from base line, mostly due to his huge swings on both sides, he need time to stroke and a lot of energy. Let's be real both first sets were decided by a tie-break. Meaning they were pretty close 2 sets, could have gone any way. Musetti was more lucky in those deciding tie-breaks but to actually win you need more than luck. If he won those sets taking Novak's serve I'd be sure he'd win, but this way even after 0-2 I knew Musetti had no chance. Not in this universe, not in any other. Because he was playing Djokovic.

while I was watching the game live I kept saying "Musetti is at at 100 speed and Djokvic is at 80. the moment he slows down he will be surpassed by Djokovic". Musetti has a very fun game to watch, but its also very demanding. he has large swings on both sides and has to be 100% fit to make the plays that he has in his game. he pushed his body a bit too far to stay in the match and he had to pay for that. Djokovic has a much efforless game and his average speed cruise for the game lets him stay at the same level for hours. he waited the momentum to fade, and raised above the physical breakdown of the other. in the end it was a great show from both players. the best match of the tournament so far.
Incredible first two sets but in my opinion you don’t give up like that. If it’s 6:0 in the 5th, well then it’s 6:0, but that’s part of the game. Novak or Rafa would have never given up like that…

This Next Gen never fails to disappoint. Same happening with Sinner right now. Serves for the first set, then loses it 5-7. No wonder those guys have been winning all the slams for the past 15 years 🙈
Musetti at least had a good reason for fading and he made his performance count in the 1st 2 sets, Sinner on the other hand has played incredible vs Nadal every time....right up until it really matters.

Keep your chin up, learn, absorb and then show to the world your numbers.
There was so much more to show: 1) The power-cross-forehand where Nole looked at Lorenzo like: "Really man? How could you do that?". 2) That incredible rally where Lorenzo stepped on the Lacoste commercial and almost broke his ankle. 3) That moment when Lorenzo was playing so unbelievably well that Nole made a face like: "What can one do against these shots"? 4) At least 2 Wawrinka-like backhands from Lorenzo. You know what I mean. This match has been a thing of beauty. Really. Lorenzo ran suddenly and completely out of physical energy, between the 2nd and the 3rd set. He never played a 5-set-match in his young life, before the match with Cecchinato (and this one). But the way he outplayed the historical number one, Novak Djokovic, aged 19, on the biggest stage, in both tie-breaks, has been unforgettable. Based on the highlights I would have to conjecture that Djokovic didn't realize this player would be a threat. But to those who think the difference was psychological, I point out that you can *hear* the cracks from Djokovic's racket striking the ball in the last three sets--and that they are somewhat louder than they were in the first two sets. I think over the years Djokovic has made a science of delivering just enough effort to win. You can't stay at the top like he has by going all out every match. In this case, he realized he really had a to turn it on and when he did Musetti didn't know what hit him.
Djokovic really shouldn't have lost the first two sets. He wasn't nearly clinical enough when he was ahead and he paid the price against a surprisingly composed and super talented youngster. He found a way in the end though and that's what matters.
Broken wrist? Sprained ankle? No, the old "My back..." Funny he was running around fine until Novak made it 4-0. Like the baby couldn't have played out the last 2 games? No class, but hey... he's a punk teen.
its 5 sets, not 3. you have to be really fit to play 5 sets. even a young player will lose his engergy after two hard sets. novak is used to pushing his body to the limit and knows how to conserve his energy when needed.
Here, two mental giants met. Musetti has the highest percentage of tiebreaks won among all the players on tour (90.9%), so he's definitely mentally tough, but doesn't yet have enough experience at the highest level. In time, I think we can expect great things from this young man.

Consistency and experience played a huge role here. Musetti showed that he can outplay Nole in most balls during the first two sets (example of consistency). i thought he was in his late 20s early 30s
@Rio De So he wasn't injured 3rd and 4th and still got pummeled 6-1 6-0? I guess injured or not, didn't matter in the end though.
@Rio De MTO was just for a short slaughter break
@Rio De If the roles were reversed and Djokovic had retired you'd be calling him a quitter and a faker. Musetti wasn't injured in the third set and he got creamed. He wasn't injured in the fourth and got creamed. He wasn't injured in the fifth, either. He was tired. Djokovic upped his own game in the third, figured out Musetti's game, and demonstrated the psychological gulf between an all-time great and a talented player with momentum. Wake TF up, asshole.
@Rio De Watch highlights again, Musetti ran fast and normal even in the 5th set.
7-6, 7-6, a matter of details. After, Djoko showed he's the best, and smashed
First two sets is traing
I do think Musetti suffered a slight bump, but his moral was hurt even more because that's what those 3 guys can do.
if Musetti goes on to be one of the greats, we will all remember those 2 sets.
There's no way Musetti is winning 18 GS. Screenshot this comment in 20 years. He will not be in the GOAT conversation like the big 3.

from my point of view he needs too much energy to win points. he is fun to watch but winning 7 matches on 3 of 5 distance you cannot expect to win every single point with a winner miracle.
@@kchuk1965 reminds me Gasquet as a guy with an all around game, a strange forehand and a stylish backhand, but you are right to say that he is a better athlete and that he has to work on the position on court. he stays way too far from base line, mostly due to his huge swings on both sides, he need time to stroke and a lot of energy. prosto je krenuo opusteno i kad je je izgubio drugi set, video je da vrag odnese salu i ubacio u vecu brzinu i oduvao ga sa terena👌🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸
Sledeci put kada mali bude igrao s njim izgubice pre pocetka meca 😁
Been watching this on and off on mute. Never got it - did Musetti get an injury? He just stopped playing all of a sudden at some point.
I think he ran out of energy from his last match which was also a incredible 5 setter so after the first two sets against Djokovic he probably couldn’t move
@@LeSunshine9 he should of finished the match. Unsportsman like not to finish. Looks like a grub for quiting
@@sesfabregas88 This makes no sense. He was in pain and could've worsen the injury and Nole didn't need to tire himself more than he did. It would've been a lose-lose situation.
@@Dawgtor he wasn't injured newer i watched the whole match there was no sign of it not even a tiny one u delusional Fedal fanboys
@@hamzabenjilany7548 he was injured in his ego
1:26 when Musetti thought the match was in the bag....2:25 Serbian machine activated
You didn't show the point where Djokovic slipped and fell flat on his stomach mid-rally, then pushed himself back up and hit a defensive shot on his knees, and then eventually won the point ?
Rolan Garros highlights are the worst, they are notorious for not showing the best shots.
First time in history a response for losing 2 tiebreakes to overcome by three bagels that's too strange
Not 2 bagels. 1 breadstick and 1 bagel. The 5th set is incomplete, so, you can't call it a bagel, IMO.
@@anocri I think djoko would have bageled musetti if they finished the match.

I am a proud italian tennis fan.
Great explanation. 100%
Very true. I agree most young players rely on fire power & play all out right from the get go and don’t conserve their energy like Nole does
Ah yes the master plan of losing the first two sets to save energy. Djokovic fans are hilarious.
@@eugenebarrettobviously he didnt lose on purpose genius, he didnt go all out
Djokovic really shouldn't have lost the first two sets. He wasn't nearly clinical enough when he was ahead and he paid the price against a surprisingly composed and super talented youngster. He found a way in the end though and that's what matters.
We must write down this name: Musetti. It could be the next big name in ATP
Nole ❤️ The Best 👊 👏👏👏👏👏
Crazy….two tie breakers followed by two Bagels & a Breadstick!
Broken wrist? Sprained ankle? No, the old "My back..." Funny he was running around fine until Novak made it 4-0. Like the baby couldn't have played out the last 2 games? No class, but hey... he's a punk teen.
@Internet Research Agency only mentally
Happened again in RG24
its 5 sets, not 3. you have to be really fit to play 5 sets. even a young player will lose his engergy after two hard sets. novak is used to pushing his body to the limit and knows how to conserve his energy when needed.
Here, two mental giants met.
Musetti has the highest percentage of tiebreaks won among all the players on tour (90.9%), so he's definitely mentally tough, but doesn't yet have enough experience at the highest level.
In time, I think we can expect great things from this young man.
