Hello. They are very popular here in Europe. Unfortunately, they break down at the connection of the radiator and the coil, there it bends / breaks a lot during strong winds. (GPS 27 is the tougher version of the 1/2 wave, 5.5 meters) There is also a longer version "GPE 27", which is considered to be the fragile one, the plastic coil casing does not hold up. (670 cm - more gentle to the wind, 'flexible' masts are recommended) A long time ago in the 80-90's, another company made similar "SIRTEL" antennas and those antennas had reinforcement at the coil with a thick plastic clamp attached to the metal channel of this antenna. They were more durable, but they have not been produced for a long time, low failure rate - low sales resulted in the collapse of the company. good health to you :)
I had the GPE 27 5/8 (the 5/8 wave counterpart to this antenna) when I got back into CB after a 20-year hiatus. It was a wonderful antenna for only $100 shipped. I had it up for two months and then sold it to the guy down the street when I got an 8-transistor Dave Made. I replaced it with a Sirio Vector 4000, and honestly, the Vector was only marginally better performance wise. The GPE antennas are made of better aluminum than the more expensive Sirio Tornado 27 5/8. I've seen 3 guys antennas break in wind storms just this past year. I have found the Maco V58 and v5000 to be better quality. But great score on this 1/2 wave. 73's from Zeke the Freak, 4200 in the Central Buckeye State.
I have that antenna. I used it for several years. I took it down and replaced it with a Sirio Tornado 5/8 Wave to see if I saw a performance increase. They are both good antennas. Great antenna especially for the money.. The GPE27 is the exact same antenna except it comes with 3 radials.. The base of the gps27 has the attachments for radials as well.. @NickoC1138 the GPE-27 is slightly longer upon full assembly. The radials are compromised though - or in other words not true quarter wavelength radials. That's what the coil and matching network helps to correct. I don't recall seeing radial attachments on the 1/2 wave.

It was a hazzle but the antenna without the static top I choose. Comes without the collars! But advertised with! Now I am still waiting at the collars the retailer ordered from Italy. Pff. This is why no one buis the "Eco" version. I didnt wanted the sphere on top. Not because its €10 cheaper of course. If I knew I bought with the anti static novilty on top. Pff a takes long time. Still waiting. And I am tired of my a99 .its so deaf its almost a dummy load, compared to the most cheap Chinese 1/2 wave base antenna I should have kept. Hard lessons.
Should you have 3 radials with it as ground planes like mine?
That would be the Sirio 5/8, radials almost 3' long!!!
Yep, wrong antenna, sir.
I talk from NH to Alabama, FL and Missouri. 60w AM and get this: 16 gauge speaker wire horizontal dipole 8 feet off the ground lol
Nice! I used to do the same with a dipole mounted in my attic.
Thanks for watching, 73
Is that hinged antenna base homemade or purchased?
It's homemade. you can see the setup here, ruclips.net/video/pLHApmOQbno/видео.html
151 south Carolina this is buckeye 353 or Mr fix it. Northwest Ohio northeast Indiana. You get ahold of some good stuff my friend. When I get my station up and running again, this spring g/summer. I'll hit you up on here and we can set a time to attempt contact. Sound good brother?
10-4, I hope you get it setup soon. Take care 353, Thanks for watching.
I have the GPE 27 5/8, it WAS a beast on 10m CW and everything I heard I worked. That was until the first storms of winter 2023 came along, first I started to get RFI into my shack, so bad it it caused my FT1000MP to reset its cpu, then the SWR started behaving erratically, so unfortunately it has to be replaced.. I’d read of the same issues arising before I bought it and hoped I’d get away with it, but nope - it’s fucked
what is this something else you speak of?
Hey Mower Junkie, do you have a link to your tilt test pole build?

@@MowerJunkieAwesome! I’d like to build one. Thanks buddy!
I want the antenna fine tune uses! I hear that mf all over the country 😂😂😂
👍👍
👍
How does it compared to the mako v 58
to be honest, I have not noticed a difference between the 2 antennas. Transmit and receive are about the same on both.
@@MowerJunkie Thanks 👍
That z. The. 1. Eye. Need n want.
need 4x 9' wires and cord for ground radials :)
I believe you were subject to the build up of Aluminum Oxide !
Forming on the sections slid into one another !
Aluminum is horrible for bonding together if protective measures aren't taken !
So if you ever want to separate the pieces, you better lube them before joining !
Cb shops 😮
👋
Make me an antenna I can't refuse
WoW. Excellent. Well produced and presented. My Best Regards To You.
Thank you so much! Take care.
I have a question. I've noticed that a lot of operators use a number or a combination of a number and a handle to identify themselves such as 151. How do you come up with the number or is there even any significance to it? I thought maybe it's your area code or possibly just the number from a HAM license if you have one. Just curious.
John likes the gm 4 cycleder it 151 cubic inches so 151
The numbers are made up by the operator or there from a cb club
Like fox bravo n you just ask to join
2fb2112 is the one I use the 2 is the USA 73 n good dx
8151 more junkie you must be in town a poor by now whatever happened to that Mako VA 5/8?
459 up here in Vermont 73s bud
Yeah, I was wondering about that Mako 5/8 antenna also. It seemed to work really well for him. 009/doubleO'nine in NH waving atcha 459 in Vermont. Cheers!
@@MrRainer-tu8nf yeah, I have the Maco V 5/8. I think they work exceptionally great. It’s a big antenna, but works well once you get the SWR balance in
I still have my Maco V58 antenna, someday it will go back in the air. Thanks for watching, 73's
