As a young boy I would draw all the time, then slowly life took over and it wasnt until lock down that I happened to be in contact with my cousin who asked if I was still drawing as I had drawn an eye for her that in all honesty I do not remember doing. , anyway she proded me into action, all I had to hand was printing paper and an hb pencil , so after forty five years I am back in school :)

I like graphite pencils because I can create something satisfying with a relatively small kit (although now you got me thinking I need some graphite powder) and because they kind of make me feel like a kid again when my only supplies were school pencils and a sketch pad I was so excited to have.

@@thevirtualinstructor I got so excited about your suggestion to make graphite powder that I nearly knocked over the electric pencil sharpener! Worked great using the woodless charcoal pencils I have that leave too heavy lines when just rubbing them sideways on the paper. Using the shavings from regular pencils, wood and all, worked well too. Rubbed it in a little with a crappy old flat brush and then swept it all away into the trash. Toned the paper beautifully and evenly without burnishing or flattening the tooth.

I love drawing with graphite! It was my first medium and I always go back to it, largely because it is so versatile and, surprisingly, expressive. Graphite lends itself to nuance in shading and highlight that colored media (colored pencil, pastel, watercolor, and oils) don't really seem to offer, from my perspective. Graphite is really the only way to truly learn value since you cannot depend on color to convey darkness or light.

Graphite pencil is such a beautiful medium as it allows you to much control to get your shading and texture. Should you make a mistake then it's not such a nightmare to fix. It's actually a calming medium to use. Truly appreciate Joseph Dixon and Nicolas-Jacques Conte for inventing such a beautiful medium that we have all come to love and appreciate ♥

I like drawing with graphite pencils because the artist is able to create either the softness of a subject, and stark lines and detail as well. It's a "forgiving" medium for those of us who are trying to improve our skills, and the effects are so rewarding at the end of a drawing. I've learned so much about graphite from your course videos and "Getting Sketchy" episodes. I would greatly appreciate a free one-year membership as I continue on my journey of honing my skills as an artist. It all begins and ends with solid drawing skills!

You can’t beat graphite for its versatility. There are times when a single pencil is all that’s needed. It’s a take anywhere medium. There is something innately comforting about just using a pencil on paper. Maybe it takes me back to my drawing as a child. It feels like home in many ways. The monochromatic feel achieved from graphite can create a sense of drama which plays on light and shade. Graphite can convey the story of a piece in ways that other mediums can’t.

Hi there! I like drawing with graphite pencil because it is such an accessible mode of artistic representation. I can grab my sketch set and some paper and get "into my groove" as it were. It's relatively inexpensive and affordable, and so I am able to create without the concern of the cost of having to toss my "failed" project and start again. Also the fact that I can erase and reapply many times is helpful to me as I hone my skills and abilities. This is not the case in many other mediums. I also love that you can get such a great depth of contrast with the various leads, from the lightest of lights to the darkest of darks. And the fact that the lowly pencil is so familiar and comfortable to most of us since early childhood helps to make it feel we are picking up and visiting with an old friend. It's all good. ~Pam

Although I have tried to commit to being a colored pencil artist, I keep coming back to graphite. For a long time I felt a bit guilty for loving graphite.....it is less time-consuming, easy to blend and erase, easy to get the values right, and less stressful, which all sounds like a lazy way out. I realized that’s they key, however. I’ve restarted almost every CP piece I’ve done, whereas graphite pieces are just a joy. Explaining why I love it is like explaining why fresh cut grass smells so good.

After being in the medical field with lots of math and science for 35 years I was forced to retire a bit early due to my health. I started watercolor as a sort of art therapy and after two years decided it was time I learned to draw. When I sat down to do it and made it a goal to draw something, anything, everyday-things started to change. It is slow going but I have actually impressed my self. I have a long way to go and I for sure need my erasers (which is why I prefer graphite for now.) I think that drawing is what is going to be one of the main things that keeps me mentally sharp as I age. I swear I can almost feel the neurons firing when I draw since it is so new to my brain lol. Glad to have found your channel.

So drawing with graphite, which is what I use for freehand drawings, Just gives me that sense of accomplishment and knowing that because someone tells you that you can't do something doesn't mean you can't do it. With just one medium and without the hassle of a particular kind of paper, you can achieve a complete artistic piece, perfect in tone, depth and detail. It is the fundamental skill to learn and what we learn in graphite is in essence what we use in other mediums ( colour pencils, pastels, and even painting) .
Lastly, the end result achieved by a well down graphite piece is in many ways more desirable than its colourful couterparts

I like drawing with graphite pencils because a pencil is what I used to make my first artistic projects as a little kid. Yes, I colored in coloring books with crayons, but when I created my own images, I would turn to the trusty number 2 pencil that we would get in school to do classwork and homework. I really should do more drawing with pencils these days. Helps to keep up hand - eye skills.

Maybe I'm too late , but I want to tell you a little about my desire to draw. I "met" you online years ago when I had my own studio space. I tuned in weekly for whatever medium you were teaching, and you personally helped me with technical online stuff and even used my photo of rocks for one of the classes. When I lost my studio space, I put away my materials. But now, years later, being home and unable to socialize, I switched to pencil art because I didn't need a studio for paints, easel, etc. But I wasn't born with talent. I do however have a great love of nature and art and realize some things can be taught..I use the grid method and also just practice looking at portions of pictures or objects etc and amaze myself at what I can do. Now I'm really old...72 and am drawing in notebooks and know that my family will be able to "see" me through my art. It may take me all day to draw a vine of flowers...erasing, shading. Before I met you,I knew nothing about perspective and drew parts of buildings I couldn't possibly have seen from standing before them. It was funny really. I could go on,but will reign this in now. I want to draw because I love recreating beauty, and I want to leave my mark on the world even if it's only for my loved ones. I hope you realize how you are giving to me and the world by showing what you know. It would be wonderful to win, but thanks for just listening . Love to you, your family and pets, Marcia in Modesto

I like working in graphite because it's one of the most expressive dry media around. It's immensely portable, requiring nothing more than a scrap of paper and the stub of a pencil at it's most minimal, up to a myriad of paper types and grades from powdered to ultra-hard sticks of graphite almost requiring a studio layout to work with proficiently. I don't know of any other media as versatile. I admit to growing more fond of lead holders than wooden pencils over the years, because of the inherent waste of wood-cased pencils as opposed to being able to use nearly every flake of graphite leads in one way or another with a holder to grinding my own powder from the residual sticks that can no longer fit in the holder. I just like graphite better than all the other media I've worked with.

No matter what new medium I try, there is something graphite that keeps calling me back to it. I call it “dust painting” because it can be so much more than just a pencil on paper. And yet, it can also just be a pencil on paper! Graphite just makes me feel like I am in control. Let’s face it; in this crazy mixed up world, sometimes it’s nice to feel like we have control over *something*, right? If I can create my own world on paper, it’s a little easier to let go of everything else.

Why graphite? Its accessible, affordable, uncomplicated... I start every drawing/painting/sketch with a little light graphite to map things out etc. I'd be lost without it!!
I have 2 children and that's what we seem to have to hand most of the time... so when the children ask me to draw with them, that's what we use 😁 theirs have fun coloured pictures around the pencil though and groovy erasers on the ends!!
Thank you for another wonderful video 😊

What's not to love about graphite? You can lose yourself for hours drawing the shapes you see, making value transitions, getting the side of your hand all dirty because you forgot to use a paper to protect the surface, enjoy sharpening the pencils with a knife and it's the most affordable medium out there too

I can't draw but love trying, and seem to be able to get better results with graphite as opposed to other mediums, my water colours are blegh! ( rubbish), my coloured pencil work is a little better, graphite however makes me feel not totally useless.

You are soooo talented. I’m going to keep drawing and maybe one day take the challenge of drawing water.
I wanted to tell anyone reading this something really important.
One day we are all going to stand before God. If you have ever lied, stolen, used God’s name in vain (omg) which is called blasphemy , hated someone (which God consideres murder) or done other things that are against His law ( the Ten Commandments), He sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, murderer. He will judge us, and because we have all broken His law, we ALL deserve hell.
But because He loves us, He became a human about two thousand years ago, lived without sinning, and died a terrible death He didn’t deserve because of us. Three days later He rose from the dead and one day He is coming back.
We all deserve the ultimate punishment (hell). But God loves us so much that He took the punishment on Himself.
We broke Gods law, Jesus paid the fine.
If you repent from your sins ( sincerely apologize for breaking His law and turn away from doing it anymore) and trust in Him and Him only, your punishment will be paid for, you will get eternal life in heaven, and you will no longer go to hell.
I’m not telling you this to judge you. The thought of you going to hell terrifies me. I don’t want anyone to go without hearing this wonderful news.
Thank you whoever took the time to read this.
If you have a Bible, I suggest you read the book of John. You can find many Bible apps on devices.
I pray that you and everyone who reads this will think about this seriously. And I hope to see you in heaven.
