Just so anyone knows, new safe canning protocols say if you are processing something for more than 10 minutes, sterilization of the jar and lid is not necessary. Also baking empty jars isn’t good for the jars.
Awesome! It is fantastic with beans and cornbread.
I usually don't like sweet relish but this is really good. When serving I added mustard to the relish and it tasted just like hotdog relish!
Hi there, thanks for your question. These jars are not calling to be heated in the oven, but rather in a pot of boiling water. This method is safe and preferred for canning.
Last year wife and I used your relish recipe, bases loaded and the batter up slammed a home run out of the ball park, this relish is fantastic!!
We are so glad you liked it, Kennethe!
I grew up on this and lost my great-aunt's recipe! This is as close as I'm going to get. We put it on the side of the plate with everything up here in the North.
Man, I *LOVE* this with fried fish
Made this last year, looking forward to making again this season! So good!
Yes, chopped chilli and mint added will work very nicely. Thanks for this easy recipe.
I have to admit that I have missed that step more than once and remembered it about halfway through the caning cycle. But, I have never had a failed seal yet. I set a paper towel over my lid lifter so I don't forget.
That looks easy, thank you
awesome on bologna sammich
Sorry, we thought you were asking about the canning procedure. You can certainly boil these jars to sterilize them if you prefer.
Love. I make it and its awesome
That looks good!! I would cut back on that sugar. Then put it on a big fat cheeseburger....Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

This would have been much better without so much sugar. I found it sickly sweet. Reduce to 3/4 cups of sugar and it’d be divine.
Can this be eaten immediately or should it sit in the cupboard for a while?
Looks good but you forgot to tell people to wipe the jar rims clean before putting the caps on 💝
washing the jars in a dishwasher and a hot drying cycle it's appropriate to keep the jars hot in the oven, just not over 220 degrees. This will keep them sterilized. You no longer have to simmer the lids, just gently wash with a soft sponge to remove any manufacturing oils and keep at room temp. Years ago it was important to heat the bonding material on the lids, but not in the past 30 years. Of course if you can't accept change you can continue to heat the lids, but the hot water does nothing to sterilize the lids at that low temp.
Could I use something else then sugar? Like honey for exemple ?
My grandmother called this chow-chow
I just tried chow chow for the first time, and it's already one of my favorite condiments! Sooo yummy!
I believe the difference is cabbage is in chow chow but not green tomato relish.
@@tubehound69some people use cabbage and other vegetables with it. I only use green tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and hot peppers for heat for my chow chow.
at the beginning of the video it says and shows to put the jars in a heated oven for 10 mins so is that not heating them???
I know that my great-aunt just used pickling spice in hers.
My grand. M. Chow chow
Is 5 cups of sugar is too sweet for the relish?...
looks delish :)
Ann M ,I just made this relish and it is delicious! Thanks for the recipe.
Can I reduce sugar?
What is the minimum sugar you could use? And could you use tomatoes that are slightly turning ripe rather than full green?
You could try using 4 cups of sugar instead of 5, Norman Wells, but any less and the vinegar is going to be too strong and out of balance with the sugar. Here's a link to the original recipe if you wish to review ingredients: allrecipes.com/recipe/19584/green-tomato-relish/
Those look like tomatillo’s!
Back then the vegetables were all chopped by hand.
That's a lot of sugar. Can it be reduced?
erlycuyler yes in half
I thought that the jars should not be heated in the oven because this can damage them??
I always do this. No problems...yet!
Too much sugar. Sorry.
5 cups of sugar are you cracked lol!
It’s a big recipe.
5 cups of sugar really. no need for that
Looked good until they added a crop of sugar cane. This title should be changed to Sweet Relish.
