Most of the places in this video will actually be packed with tourists. My number 1 tip for visitors is to get out of the city and visit one of the other beautiful towns The Netherlands has to offer. The country is quite small and there is excellent public transportation so everything is just a short and comfy train ride away. Haarlem, Alkmaar, Utrecht, Leiden and Delft are all less than an hour by train from Amsterdam central station and all have the canals and old buildings (and yes, even "coffeeshops" if thats your thing) you can see in Amsterdam but without all the tourists. Almost everybody speaks English very well and prices in these towns are usually alot lower than in Amsterdam, so if you really want an authentic experience of Dutch city life, go and see these places. You can even get your hotel there and save some money and go and see Amsterdam on day trip, instead of spending your entire trip there.
Two friends and I are going to Amsterdam next November using it as a base. I was there for three days November 23. It was second time in Amsterdam and in those three days managed to visit Haarlem and Hertogenbosch because Den Bosch had the mega record fair. Both cities where great. We'll go to Den Bosch again for the fair and also Rotterdam for the modern architecture. As you say the public transport in the Netherlands is great and so many places easily accessible. I should check out those other cities. I love photography so anything that looks picturesque is great. My favourite actor Rutger Hauer was born in Utrecht area so that might be a good place to visit. What do you think of The Hague? From photos it seems nice.
Tourist tip: watch for the damn bike lanes, its so frustrating biking in amsterdam with all the careless tourists, legally a pedestrian is in trouble if something happens on the bike lane. 2. Dont rent a bike and go around biking if a. Youre not a good cyclist and b. You have no experience cycling through crowds, busy roads, and dont know the signaling used. DEFINITELY dont bike high or drunk. And if you want some good weed go to Boerjongens - they are synonymous with quality. You wont regret it. Avoid any street conversations, pretty much all thieves and scammers. Ignore the whispering drug dealers at night. Thats all i can think of rn
If you’re a tourist and do not bicycle on the regular plz dont rent a tandem its not as easy as iT seems especially if you dont ride bikes often. IT Will only create dangerous situations
Yeah, seems like if you're baked and you get up there with your buddy you would crash every 200 meters! 😂 This mission seems to have a high risk of involvement in an accident 😂
TBH, around every corner in Amsterdam, there's at least 5 people smoking weed or marowana or vaping. I should know. I've been in Amsterdam for a vacation about 4 hours, and I've already seen 4 different "e-smoking" shops, complete with refills and liquor
If you visit Haarlem, there is a secret spot for special beers. In Zijlstraat, 200m from Jopenkerk, there is a small bar that is loved by locals, where you can taste a lot of special flavoured beers. It’s called Uiltjebar (owl bar)

As a local, these are exactly the places I would recommend. Don't go to crazy expensive stroopwafel shops or any othet tiktok hype, go to the local markets, they're everywhere.. Don't go to the tourist cheese shop like Henry Willig and Old Amsterdam (it's fake) go to Abraham Kef or any local market and ask for boerenbelegen (raw milk medium aged cheese). Mainly stay away from the old centre around Central Station..anywhere a mile away from ther is just great, hop on a tram.
Awesome video! Very helpful. What songs were used in the background. I love the beat of the song playing during theAmsterdam Canals next level: do a private boat trip with a local? Thanks!
I know you can't cover everything, but I think the Oost got shorted in your picks. I was glad to see Ten Katemarkt make the list. It might not be the best street market in Amsterdam, but it has the best prices and some really great baked goods.
Definitely we could not put everything in. Actually not even half! 😅 but at least this is a start! And for those who want to try, we host plenty of amazing locals on our platform, who offer truly interesting activities, tours and workshops to explore a different sides of Amsterdam (so as many other cities worldwide). This said, you got it right with Ten Katemarkt: cheap and great baked goods are also the reasons why many locals recommended it to us :) And the Oost... Oh well: here @ Withlocals we are big fans of this beautiful lesser-known district! Now though we are very curious: What is though the best street market in town according to you?
I am sure that my friends and neighbors from my time on Wijttenbachstraat would expect me to choose the dappermarkt, and that is a great street market. However, I have to say my favorite is still Albert Cuyp Market. I know this is the busiest and most touristy, but there is a reason for that. The real reason I love it though is I rented a studio overlooking the market for a month one summer. The first morning I lived there, I was cursing the early morning noise of the market setting up. By the time I was leaving I had become accustomed to the sounds and timings of the market and starting my day with coffee, overlooking the shoppers and merchants became special to me.
Reading your reply this morning was truly heartwarming :) We could hear the same sounds, smell the same coffee scent and see the same shoppers setting up their stalls! Beautiful, precious, authentic memory. Thank you for sharing it with us! And yes, we agree: both the markets you named (Dapper and Albert Cuyp) are valid suggestions, for different reasons, that divided also our locals 😄 Maybe a good suggestion for anyone willing to see the same beauty you just talked about, would be to slow down, give yourself the time to soak in the city's rainbow of atmospheres and vibes, get accustom to the sounds (noises sometimes eheh), smells, people's gestures... But if they do not have so much time? Well, maybe meeting someone that is willing to walk you through, help you to choose a portion that is special to them for some reason and listen to their stories, connect to their places. Because there is no better way to get in touch with the beating heart of a city than managing to actually meet their inhabitants, don't you think? :)
I absolutely agree. On every trip I have taken to Amsterdam I have made friends. Some have become family. Each of these wonderful Dutch friends has added to my love and appreciation for Amsterdam by sharing their perspective of the city with me. Cafe nes, Radio Plantsoen, and even places like Dappermarkt are all things that I would not have come to love if it weren't for one local friend or another.
You just embodied the spirit of Withlocals in one comment, Richard 😍 We could not agree more with you! It is only with and thanks to the locals that travelers can actually go beyond the surface of places and tune to their same heartbeat ❤ This is also what we are working for: to change the way people travel and approach cities, to reconstruct the connection between visitors, local inhabitants and places!
You are welcome Thomas :) We are glad to hear you like the idea and the video! Next step should be to travel to Amsterdam and get in touch with our locals 😜 🇳🇱 If you do, do not forget to let us know! 😘
wow! Then you are not "just a tourist" anymore :) Was any of the suggestions above useful during the trip? And of course, you are welcome for the reply 😊
I did take the first suggestion - I got out earlier than usual (it's a bad habit of mine to sleep so late) and took loads of photos. I LOVE experiencing cities/countryside when no one is around. I can feel and see so much more. Next trip I will try some of your other suggestions. Having only 5 days, there just isn't enough time to cram so much into my stay :-) Thomas

Not to mention: try also Withlocals of course 😜 We got so many knowledgeable locals on our platform and the experiences they offer are simply amazing, especially picking them right for what you want to do/see! Just Google for the cities below to get a better picture: Utrecht - 20 min train ride from Amsterdam. Utrecht also has canals, but wider. It is a city with a lot of students. My favourite city for a day trip or a night out. There's a nice vibe over there. Leiden - 20/25 min train ride. It is just like Amsterdam, but smaller and more beautiful in my eyes. Also a lot of students! Rotterdam - 30/40 min train ride. Totally different, very modern, high buildings but good restaurants and bars. Groningen - 1,5 hour train ride. In the north of the Netherlands. Groningen also has canals and nice bars. Volendam - 30 min train ride. An old, typical Dutch fishing village. There will be a lot of tourists, but you must have seen it. I don't know if it is a good place to visit in the winter. Other options: - Den Bosch - Maastricht - Den Haag/The Hague
A question from an "inexperienced "traveller " taking her first steps at trying to become bolder and less dependent on "touristic ,"visits Can l plan the travelling there on my own (of course!!!!) and get to meet a local person there to take me to places that are the real "city life" and be with him or her throughout my staying?? And how could l do this?????🤦😊💚 Thank you ,from Greece
Have you thought about touring Nice - France. It’s one of our favourite places and a very popular destination for tourists. Keep up with the good work, we loved your video on Rome and even went to a couple of places you recommended.
Step by step we will open our platform to locals in more destinations worldwide! But it takes time if we want to preserve our high-quality standards and keep both our local hosts and travelers happy 😀 this said, we agree that Nice is a lovely city 🇫🇷 Let's see what happens in the upcoming months! For sure thank you so much for the endorsement and for keeping watching :) And yay for Tome! What did you try over there that was inspired by our locals in the video? And also one last question out of curiosity: did you also consider actually reaching out to the locals on lour Withlocals platform?
@@Withlocals Hi, we went to Trastevere and saw the Forno when we walked there from the Coliseum going the long way round. We also tried the street food you featured. I did try booking a dinner with one of the locals but it was so popular, no dates were available for about 3 weeks. We also went to the biggest market we have ever seen and purchased a pair of red Italian shoes.
@Julian sounds you had loads of fun! 😀And definitely a touch of Italian fashion could not be left out 👠 What is the name of the market though? Maybe other viewers are interested in it! For what concerns the home dinner... Really sorry to hear it was not available for so long! Indeed they are super popular and our hosts really do their best to accommodate as many travelers as possible... Which is not always possible eheh But please, if you will come back to Rome, give it another try! Totally worth it 🍝
Of course Porta Portese market! It is also among our Top 10 suggestions 😀 For those who missed it: ruclips.net/video/fcPvyIoemoo/видео.html 🇮🇹 Indeed it is HUGE ahah Are you lucky enough to speak Italian and/or did you meet sellers that speak English, or you had to use your body language skills to make yourself understood? 🙌👌✋👐🖐🖖😀
Alstublieft 😘 Any other useful Amsterdam recommendation that we missed? And what about Berlin? What is the #1 activity you would recommend to a visitor over there?
😂 sounds like something that could happen in Dam Square! Or, as an Amsterdammer told us once: "You are in Amsterdam, there are plenty of reasons to scream!" 😂
Luckily most rental bikes are painted in bright colours so locals can easily spot them so they can take there skill in navigating the traffic into account.
Hello i would use some help, i am comming to Amsterdam at the end of the April and need place to stay, i am coming alone and would prefere single room for myself so i want to be alone in room is there any good priced hotel close to center or anything else i can stay in alone and what would be the price, help please :D
We are definitely not the best platform to talk accommodations but what we would recommend is to start with: 1. Contacting one of our locals > Book a tour & ask questions :) 2. TripAdvisor 3. The community of viewers we got on this channel! Good luck with your search and we are looking forward to seeing you in A'dam 😘🇳🇱
The Withlocals philosophy behind is the following: let's try to move beyond the same highlights, venues, shops. Let's try to shift from mass tourism to personal quests to discover the essence of cities. Everyone has the right to travel, which is the best way to overcome barriers and stereotypes (so relevant nowadays!). At the same time inhabitants of cities have the right to live their space in tranquility. Tourists cannot be stopped, not to mention the huge inflow of money into local economies! But we must find a balance: how to do it? Our answer as Withlocals is: let's join the locals! Let's learn together to love a city like its locals do, to respect its inhabitants and culture, to distribute across town without overcrowding one specific spot. We firmly believe it is possible and we are working for this ideal :) How does it sound to you as a proposition?

An old, typical Dutch fishing village. There will be a lot of tourists, but you must have seen it. I don't know if it is a good place to visit in the winter.
Other options:
- Den Bosch
- Maastricht
- Den Haag/The Hague
A question from an "inexperienced "traveller " taking her first steps at trying to become bolder and less dependent on "touristic ,"visits
Can l plan the travelling there on my own (of course!!!!) and get to meet a local person there to take me to places that are the real "city life" and be with him or her throughout my staying??
And how could l do this?????🤦😊💚
Thank you ,from Greece
Couchsurfing is the way to go =)

Thanks for this wonderful video.
What an Amazing Video of Amsterdam!! ❤❤ ❌❌❌
Dankjewel Pipa ;)
Waar kan ik zo'n sunset kanaal tocht boeken op een sloep?
Love your video
Wonderful advice and excellent photography. Do we really need the constant annoying background music/noise
Love it!
Appreciate the local insights and unique tips from a local dutch person/s. Thank you from Singapore!
Great job!
thanks! But we did a good job only if - after watching it - you are now dreaming of Amsterdam 😉
Totally worth it 🍝
Withlocals The Market was called Porta Portese. It must have been 1.5 km long and 100s of stall.
I visited Amsterdam and Zagreb! Check out my Vlog, I’m pretty new to this but can’t wait to gain more experience whilst visiting more places! 😃
Love Amsterdam!
Good video, bedankt out Berlijn
Alstublieft 😘 Any other useful Amsterdam recommendation that we missed? And what about Berlin? What is the #1 activity you would recommend to a visitor over there?
😂😂😂 the bikes comment kill me
Would have thought smoke a FAT doobie would have made it to the top 10
😂 Let's say that "Get higher" is in. Everyone then can interpret it as they prefer ahahah
The most annoying thing about Amsterdam is the young male tourists looking to get high and get laid. Boring and irritating.
🌿🌿✊
Excellent 🥰👌🌹
Someone knows if you are going to be safe on the Adam Lookout on the swing? So do you have a belt? Or are you just sitting there 🙈
in the outro, what was that place where children blew the huge soap bubble?
I think it is the Nemo science museum. In Amsterdam of course :)
That's the science museum Nemo. Fun place for kids. They have a ball transport machine and other fun experiments to do there.
@@joehoe222 oooh nice. Is it also enjoyable for adults? Like, if I come with my older brother, will the two of us stand out and such?
@@ninag6198 I'm not sure, haven't been there for a decade. Last time it was also ok for adults.
I been in amstedam ,very crowed in square DAM ,therr one crazy man shouted alot middle road
😂 sounds like something that could happen in Dam Square! Or, as an Amsterdammer told us once: "You are in Amsterdam, there are plenty of reasons to scream!" 😂
No actual local would recommend tourists to ride a bike 😖
What do u recommend
You gotta get used to the pace some way tho
@@nancyramirez3081 ruclips.net/video/ieDW-mFdNtM/видео.html
Love riding bikes in AMS
Luckily most rental bikes are painted in bright colours so locals can easily spot them so they can take there skill in navigating the traffic into account.
how do I get a local to give me a boat ride?
Any recommendations for the strongest weed . Heard green place is good
Netherland 😍♥️
Hello i would use some help, i am comming to Amsterdam at the end of the April and need place to stay, i am coming alone and would prefere single room for myself so i want to be alone in room is there any good priced hotel close to center or anything else i can stay in alone and what would be the price, help please :D
If you going to the netherlands do go to more than only Amsterdam
Yea okay but i was asking for place in Amsterdam to stay like hotel or anything where i can be alone and good priced
@@markonikolic8095 i don't live in Amsterdam sorry
We are definitely not the best platform to talk accommodations but what we would recommend is to start with:
1. Contacting one of our locals > Book a tour & ask questions :)
2. TripAdvisor
3. The community of viewers we got on this channel!
Good luck with your search and we are looking forward to seeing you in A'dam 😘🇳🇱
My dream place to be 😍
Dank ie ☺
Alstublieft :)
Like the Video, hate that you give out secrets. Nur, well done!
Proud to be Dutch
