“No. Stop that, you’re being mean.”
Such an innocent but strong sentence full of hurting. Florence did an excellent job.
I agree, it isn't easy to make a detestable character likable and sympathetic, but Florence certainly accomplished it here. She really deserved her Oscar nomination! ❤️🏆
Trina Q damn you think Amy is detestable? People’s hatred for this character has always confused me 🤷♀️
@trinaq except she's not detestable at all
im so glad that someone agrees with because me and my sister are obsessed with that line and have watched this scene multiple times just to hear it
I thought it was funny at first but then I realized what is meant to her how she barely shows emotion this is the first time we see her vulnerableness really come out
Me: *searches ‘laurie and amy’*
Title: “Amy and Laurie”
Me: you know what my bad you right
Lmao
I searched Amy and Laurie 😂
HAHAHAAHHAHA
ahhhh i searched Amy and Laurie lol
I searched Laurie and Amy😂
"And I won't be the person you settle for just because you can't have her" 😭 how many of us need to say those words
Feel like thats gonna be me in some time
not me 🤪
bc i run away before i catch feelings 🤠
Me literally a week ago...
This brought me to tears ... twice
Yep, I just fear I'll never find a person who loves me, just settles for me.
For some reason that's a small fear of mine. ..
I wish this movie had another half hour of watching their relationship and Amy develop.
Yes. Same thoughts
I know....ugh
same thoughts
sameee
same!!
when amy confesses she has loved laurie all her life, that moment hit me right in the heart
A i didn’t like this version as much as the ‘94 but that definitely hit me RIGHT HERE. We all have to remember what we hate Amy for is burning jo’s book because she didn’t get to go with Laurie and meg and jo. She has always been in love with Laurie.
Best part of the movie
Lily Rose ...that’s what I said.
Not in the book though.
God loves you
I love when she says “you’re being mean.” Ugh her line delivery is on another level
Not that it matters, but I'm your 1k like :)
Agreed! I felt that part so much and it’s such a simple line
I read this somewhere
Jo brings out the child in Laurie, and Amy brings out a man
Laurie needed her
so true! she makes him seems like a responsible/accountable person and that's what he needed
Yes! Exactly!
Jo may have brought out the child in Laurie, but she also the one who made him a man. All of that was flushed down the drain the moment Jo rejected him. Amy brought out the man, but she was never responsible for making Laurie a man.
@nocchi.9589 i kinda understand where you're coming from
I couldn't agree with this statement more
her delivery when she sees laurie had taken an interest in her is like years of unrequited love being spilled out at once ugh i love it
and she says the same thing that Jo said: no. love that touch.
I truly feel Florence Pugh stole the show in this movie. She was absolutely sensational in every scene she was apart of.
Locarbmonster I was about to write exactly that when I read your comment. Sure, I enjoyed each character but I really just wanted to see her.
Locarbmonster but I dont like her arrogant bitchy face
Agreed. She was amazing and I wish she had won the Oscar.
I second this! If Laura Dern hadn't have been nominated for her role in "Marriage Story", then there's a high chance that Florence would have nabbed the Oscar! 🏆💚
Completely agree. I fell in love with her.
Is it me!? Because I really love hearing Amy's voice. It's so pleasing to the ears.
Florence Pugh has a gorgeous speaking voice. So deep and soothing and beautiful.
Not just you😁
Jesu Sode I know!! Whenever I love an actor (Timothy lol) I usually hate whenever they have a lover in movies. But right as I saw Amy and heard her speak, I shipped it so hard. I now love the both of them so much. I could listen to her talk allll day, it’s just so comforting I don’t know why
I had the same thought!
Finally! Someone commented my right thoughts about her voice! I mean, she also did an amazing job and about this scene, she killed! I just can't over this scene because she expressed that feelings very well.
"I'm looking at you" GOD THAT GETS ME EVERY TIME
Don’t use God’s name in vain ❤️
@kg2002 uhhh anyways so
ME TOO LMAO
Krystal Gittens lmao oh my god
@kg2002 which god are you referring too?
She has her own stand out presence from all the other actors. Her voice is just so amazing too .
Agree
Right, so classy and intelligent.
And so does Timothee! He’s so unique 😍
She sounds like Selena Gomez
is froddo ur pfp
Amy believed that she had been second to Jo all her life. Jo believed that Amy had a way of getting things for her!
Typical sisters! Always jealous of what the other one has! Loved it.
Both are somewhat true though. Amy probably refers to the times when they were young, when Jo used to be rough and boyish with her. She also sees Jo and Laurie so close. With Jo however, the dream of her life is to travel the world, and she's bitter when Amy gets it instead of her.
Just goes to show, that everyone views their childhood through a different lens. I don’t think either of them is necessarily wrong. But where Meg and Beth had the calm, peaceful personalities, Amy and Jo were also alike with the fiery, passionate personalities. That’s why they butted heads the most out of the sisters, and explains why Amy always felt second to Jo as the youngest of the clan.
Aunt March took Amy to Europe to go to fancy parties and be shown off to men, why would Aunt March waste her time taking Jo to Europe to write stories? Jo is loved for following her dreams while Amy gets called a gold digger simply doing what she was told, and I sometimes see the hate from female fans. So much for women supporting women.
Such a sibling thing.
Kudos to Florence for making her Amy far more likable than previous versions of the character. Amy and Laurie's relationship is built up so well, that their eventual engagement doesn't come off as sudden, or a betrayal to Jo.
Good evening Dr
I found her the least likeable and this is the only one I ever thought of as broaching betrayal
I always liked her. So she screwed up as a kid. Who doesn’t?
Finding Florence’s Amy the least likeable though, I still think she acted her part well.
EXACTLY. That's the essence of why this adaptation is superior to all the others.
I just noticed that Amy touches the spot on the back of her head, right where Laurie just touched her as she walks away. As if she still feels his hand there after he pulled it back. Such a subtle little addition from Florence Pugh - even when she’s being strong and rejecting him, he still lingers, she still feels him after he’s gone.
You are right, i agree with that
Great observation
Amazing observation!
He actually touched her ear. Not the back of her head.
@Anaa81932 he has long fingers
When Laurie realizes he had been being a Jo to someone else.
OHHHHH
The eyes that sees everything sees not itself
I know literally everyone's said this but I love the way Florence delivers those lines. her reaction is perfect- the words themselves and the way she's clearly upset and trying not to cry feels like a call back to her younger years because the "you're being mean" is such an innocent sentence- but at the same time there's maturity and strength in the way that she stands up for herself and doesn't settle or give in despite wanting to be with Laurie. everything about that juxtaposition between the girl she was and the woman she's becoming is just fantastic.
I am remembering Shakira🤭
Out of all the little woman production, this is the one that made Amy and Laurie the most convincing and Amy actually likable. Kudos to Florence Pugh and Greta Gerwig
Jamie Marie no not likeable
still prefer jo and Laurie though. Laurie feels love fir Jo and lust for Amy.
Gracie KH he feels platonic love for jo and real romantic love for amy
Amy was always a good character, and likeable too. It's weird how everyone wants "flawed, realistic" characters but then rejects them when they are actually offered. But I see why Florence would seem different, because this adaptation is the only one that genuinely seems to care for Amy and doesn't seem like a version created solely to exalt Jo March.
Hala ABG do you mean jo and laurie were never a couple in the book?
The look on his face when he understood that he missed the right person this whole time
That face in 1:47 when she pushes Laurie's hand away... There's a mix of anger, pain, fear and disgust all there, at the same time. So, so good, Florence Pugh deserved that Oscar nod.
You know Florence will give a great performance when she does the ☹️
@jbvader721 RIGHT? She pouts and you know something GREAT is coming
During her childhood, It must have been so hard for Amy to watch Laurie not even acknowledge her existence, while at the same time him not being able to take his eyes off of Jo!
1:41 That is great acting. You could read everything just from the face.
“Your being mean” so much innocence in that one line.
How one line can evaluate a character she’s innocent and naive but also knows what is good and what is wrong
Amazing job Florence
Exactly. It's such a small line, but it's so charged and perfectly delivered. I swear I think about this scene so much, I love this film 😭
When Florence makes the ☹️ expression, you just know she's about to deliver such great acting performance. I love her so much
Her frown is a work of art, she throws her whole heart into it.
😂😂😂 100%
In both the scenes, when Laurie expresses his feelings to Jo and then later to Amy, he don't say it in words but both the girls understands it without even saying. I just love it. ❣
I literally just thought about that last night.
A woman's intuition is one of the most powerful things on this planet. Never underestimate it.
This scene made me cry in the theater, bc I think it’s exactly what all of us girls who r used to being second best needed to hear. Her being strong enough that even though she may love him, she respects herself and her worth enough not to just leap into his arms at the drop of a hat when she’s received one minute of attention.
Her expressions, the way her face visibly twists in inward pain- I have watched this scene 100 times and I can only hope I express myself as deeply and honestly as she does.
"Why? You know why."
I feel like this confession is really unfair as well aside from Amy's point that she feels she's being a rebound, because if Laurie's gonna tell her he likes her after years of unrequited love why can't he say it out loud?
fr amy deserved better. like if laurie really wanted her he should’ve said it out loud. now it just feels like she’s a rebound here. i wish amy would have responded with “i don’t” when laurie said “you know why”. its so unfair ugh
@somethingaboutblue8484Words are not the only way of communicating. She understood him well.
They have known each other for so many years. They know each other intimately, they don't need words, she perfectly understands his meaning. It's actually incredibly good writing. It's much more powerful. If they spelled everything out, it would feel cheap and silly, as far as writing the dialogue goes.
@ariana.billettnah, i think they were saying it’s good writing also because of that tiny detail representative of how laurie never outright courted amy
This scene is extraordinary. You'll actually feel for Amy here.
Amy is actually likeable. Like I only realised it after reading the book for the second time and I was more mature to understand where she's coming from. At first she's this annoying little brat, so ambitious and selfish, but she's a loving character. It is hard to be under Jo's shadow, as a daughter, as a sister and as an artist,a s well. Jo is such a strong character who is so much like Amy, and Amy developed this kind of attitude and character, unknowingly, I suppose, so she can have her place in the world.
@Danny Ponce Farias it's pretty much the same. This movie just offers you a kinda different perspective. In the book, since it is more of Jo's perspective, Amy is such a brat at times.
@atoetral9644 what page is this in the book?
Amy was a brat as a child LOL, but she grew up and matured. She always knew she had to marry well. Her oldest sister Meg married for love and was poor (so she couldn't help the family out), Jo was off trying to be a writer, Beth was sickly. So Amy knew the job of marrying well fell on her. She really didn't have the luxury to marry for love or waiting around pursuing a 'career' (as painter/writer/etc), her sight had always set on someone with $ so she could help her family out. The whole thing kind of reminded me of the dynamic of Pride and Prejudice characters too. The 'job' of marrying well fell on Jane, since she was the prettiest and most amiable of the Bennett sisters :D
"you know what things.." and now "you know why.."
Remembering the lines too, suddenly LOL
Because you thought that I should know!!
YES THIS
Oh my god, kill me-
Her accent slipped when she said “won’t” 😂 2:02
That little eye roll that Laurie does right after Amy tells him that Fred Vaughn will be in London for the next few weeks says it all. It's so perfectly paired with him walking away and telling her she shouldn't marry him... Ugh.
was looking for this comment haha I love it
“Not when I’ve spent my entire life loving you” Can’t lie, I cried a little bit after that phrase
Florence’s acting is just so incredibly real??? Like beyond natural. The mannerisms, the looking away because the feeling of love/nervousness is too intense. Wow
So many little things… the falsely proud jut of her chin when she defends Fred by saying he’s away on business, that immediately gives way to nervous sketching and looking away
I feel like some people don't like Amy for what she did to Jo as a response to her anger for always being left out, but they fail to remember that Amy was a child. They all were, and they all acted like children one way or another. Except Beth, despite being the 2nd Youngest. It's a time period of about 7-8 years so obviously they will mature and move on from things. I never saw Jo as a good match for Laurie since she had to try to try to convince herself, and failed, out of desperation, to try and love him. Amy never had any problem with that, and even when she came back married to Laurie, she was worried with how Jo would react. Amy matured the most, but in the end Jo realized that she shouldn't seek love just because she is lonely.
someone finally said that for me, thank you.
I think part of why people fail to grasp that is because child Amy was still played by Adult Florence. (Who is amazing in every way.)
@melaniegentle2608 people hate amy since a long time ago tho
I found Jo to be extremely rude to Amy and very self-absorbed generally, I feel Amy's anger towards her is totally justified.
Ya, I'm even a writer, and I understood why may did what she did. Yes, she shouldn't have burned the pages but at the same time jo hurt her somewhere that was equally important to her as writing was for Jo, at first I thought because I am a writer a would like jo more but certain scenes just showed her as shellfish, the way she treated may when they left and Amy pleading to go with them, like there was a nicer way to say no and not hurt her feelings, and as a child, Amy didn't take it well, so bc of one scene a lot of people hated Amy and didn't want to watch her grow into someone better. Not sure if what I wrote makes sense
The music at 1:17 is so enchanting that I come to play this video every time I feel low. It calms me down
"Not when I've spent my entire life loving you" 🥺🥺
She was amazing in this scene, it was all so realistic
*Amy:* what are you doing?
*Laurie:* I'm looking at you.
*Amy:* I mean what do you intend to do?
*Laurie:* with life?
*Amy:* yes
*Laurie:* I've been writing an opera, I'd be the central figure.
*Amy:* That's a waste of time.
*Laurie:* What would you have me do?
*Amy:* go and work for your grandfather and make something if yourself.
*Laurie:* okay, you're not playing fair.
*Amy:* here
**Hands him drawings**
*Laurie:* it's very good.
When did you do this one?
*Amy:* was the day at the beach.
The first time I met Fred.
*Laurie:* that's right.
What's he doing?
*Amy:* he's in London on business. He'll be back in a few weeks.
*Laurie:* don't marry him.
*Amy:* what?
*Laurie:* don't marry him.
*Amy:* why?
*Laurie:* why? You know why.
*Amy:* no. No
*Laurie:* yes
*Amy:* Laurie you're being mean.
*Laurie:* how am I being mean?
*Amy:* stop it. Stop it.
I have been second to Jo my whole life in everything. And I will not be the person you settle for just because you cannot have her. I won't, I won't do it. I won't not when I've spent my entire life loving you.
Her dress is so beautiful!!
Inspired by Monet's Women in a Garden' painting
Draw me like one of your French boys
I shipped Laurie and Amy right from from the beginning in the scene where she was in the carriage and ran to hug laurie when she saw him, the chemistry they had was insane. Even though I love saoirse and timothee, i wasn't rooting for their characters to end up together
RIGHHTTTT
Lmao, Paul and princess irulan had History
i love how you can see the realization sinking in for amy, how her face slowly falls as she understands what laurie's saying.
it's very subtle but so effective. i love florence.
Florence Pugh is 24 and already such an incredible talent. This woman needs an oscar, seriously.
Amy : I won't do it
Laurie : You will. I'm the new Emperor.
Crowd : Lisan al-Gaib !!!
I think what made this scene so beautiful is the fact that he tried to joke around with her like she was the little girl he first met but when he realizes that she has become this gorgeous woman, he knows that he’s in love with her. CAPTIVATING❤️
"you're being mean" so simple, yet you feel the heavy of every words
I never understood why so many people hated Amy in the book. Yes, what she did with Jo’s manuscript as a child was terribly cruel, but after that incident she improved so much. She actually never harmed anyone after that and was constantly trying to work on herself and treated everyone with compassion. Glad they finally portrayed her like this in the movie
Ikr?! Like it was ONE time and everyone just holds it against her
IVE NEVER HATED HERRRRR. SHES MY FAVE
fr she was literally TWELVE
That toss of her pencil and papers, gets me every time
This is what we call self respect. Off course he loved her but he needs to prove it to her to get her
When he went “how am I being mean” My heart went: 🥺✨💕🦋
Oh Conrad Fisher.....
Amy is the best character in Little Women...the more realistic with the status of women of the time..Amy was inspired by the beloved sister of Louisa Alcott. She was real and sometimes imperfect for this she is a complex character
did anyone else notice how his scarf changes throughout the scene?
Haha good catch!
The way she says “you’re being mean” is so satisfying
I honestly am amazed at how they were able to show the difference in Laurie's love for Amy and Jo. for Jo it was more like a comfortable one but with Amy it was a man falling in love with a woman
Laurie looks like a child playing dress-up in his father's clothes.
florence pugh was hands down my favorite in the film. from the way she laughed at meg burning her hair off to burning jos books then meeting laurie for the first time and she so obviously liked him with the 'im amy" then the best scene in the movie (best funny scene) where she does the "im amy" again while crying like the cutest little baby ever. but then this scene happens and florence just kills the emotional reaction spot on.
“Not when I’ve spent my entire life loving you.”
This. This was so, so well played.
I find it so funny that whenever Laurie says something that hints at his true feelings, both of the March sisters just say 'no' over and over again
Florence Pugh has the most memorable performance in Little Women! She was very deserving of an Oscars nomination.
Florence Pugh blew this scene out of the water. Holy moly. With her performance I wouldn't be surprise if she turned a generation of women who previously hated Amy, into staunch Amy fans! And the scene makes her ending up with Laurie the only logical outcome.
The way she uses breath and space in every one of her lines… she’s a masterclass actor! I want her in all of the things!
She does the same things in every role.
@tessdurberville711 no bro you're just a hater
Florence is so good at these mad sad scenes just like here and in black widow at the dinner table. The subtle movements she does like reaching up to her eyes when about to start crying and her expressions is such a good acting
the pain in her face when she swats his hand away. florence pugh is a Master
The way he says “you know why” sounds exactly like how he says “you know what things” in CMBYN🥰😍😍
YEEES!
How can something be so calm and soothing yet sad and heartbreaking at the same time?
I love how they made Jo and Amy so relatable even now. Jo feeling that Amy gets away with everything just because she is the youngest while Amy always thinks she is second to Jo in everything just by being older. The acting and story was in my opinion very well done.
I love the way she says "It's a waste of time" so matter of factly. Florence Pugh is perfection in this scene.
0:13 "What would YOU have me do, Stilgar?"
"Lead them to Paradise."
The best Amy March.
Paul Atreides and Princess Irulan 😂
Get used to that ☹️ when Dune Messiah comes along.
poor laurie every time he tries to confess the girl starts with *"no"*
I love the scene where he asks her to marry him to claim the galactic throne.
this scene always gives me chills
it shows how much amy matured
A part about Amy/Laurie in Good Wives, which I really love, is that when he takes her advice and leaves to work, he actually plans to work on art and music as he mentions the opera here. And he also plans to make Jo the heroine and muse. However when he tries creating something, Jo's face evades him and instead he finds inspiration in Amy (he starts imagining golden hair and blue dresses which is a sign of Amy). Slowly Amy replaces Jo as his muse. It's gradual and brilliantly written.
God! I love that part in the book, how he's clinging to Jo while he's subconsciously falling for Amy so his attempts to keep hurting over Jo are futile, I think that's something no adaptation is able to capture
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm Amy"
laurie : a rejected bean
His "yes" and then that move. I would fall apart 🤭
I LOVE so much when they talk about the other drawing. The first time she met Fred, instead of drawing him she drew Laurie. And the faces Florence makes as she says that UGH the delivery is sooo good. You can tell there’s something more there and brings up Fred to maybe suppress her feelings for Laurie or as a reminder to herself that that’s who she has to be with. And the fact that she kept that drawing this whole time. Florence plays Amy so well, it’s obvious that Amy loves Laurie but is holding back ughhhh I love it
I really love to see how she became mature and how she made Laurie realized right things.
i love how there is so much space on laurie’s side of the picnic blanket and yet he chooses to be closer to amy who’s sitting on the distant corner, really shows how much they act on their love for each other
amy defender til death fr
It was in this scene where Laurie realized how much he needed Amy
when he said "what? im not being mean" it broke my heart, he looked hurt🥺
Florence Pugh is a such revelation🤩🤩🤩
Can't wait to see her in black widow😍
I saw this clip specially when she says “don’t be mean” so strong, hurt, innocent and love all at once.and it became the reason I watched the movie. Wished it had been more about them two. How he falls for her, how she matured. Such a great actress.
"I've been writing an opera. I would be the central figure." LOL
i love the sentence "you're being mean" because she doesn't say "you are mean", it means that she knows he's not usually like that and is intending to hurt her right in this moment
I love this scene so much, how she said “you’re being mean” 💕
Although i love the last part of this scene, where she confesses her love, i adore the first section where it's just the two of them chatting while she draws him. The subtle smiles while looking at each other, and then her taking the chance to call him out on his laziness.. that felt very real, very much like a married couple. he was trying to flirt and she was the mature woman who made him realize he could do better.. that he HAD to if he wanted her.
Cant wait to see these two in Dune.
Florence always playing 2nd Pick Girl to Timothee 😭
If I had a nickel for every time that happened, I'd have two nickels. I know it's not much but it's funny how that's happened twice in five years.
0:52 “first time I met Fred.” And yet you drew Laurie!!!
Look how her voice is quivering wow 2:01 her acting skill is no joke
Oh my god, I love this movie so much. I love how she finds he is being mean because she has loved him ever since and just because Jo rejected him, she didn't want to be his women that he settles for. But she doesn't see that he was falling in love with her.
1:51 the way he mumbled so innocently
"Not when I've spent my entire life loving you." uuuffffff
I love how she gives him the skitch like it's no big deal then pauses to see his reaction.
THIS IS AN OSCAR WORTHY SCENE
It says so much to how deep she loves him…. The first time she met Fred, she was drawing Laurie.
