I would love to know how you increased motor speed and torque. Could you explain more on this? And how your motor design is different?
There are only two theoretical limits to the power output of an electric motor if you can supply it with unlimited and perfectly phase-aligned electric current, the permanent magnet flux and heat. Increasing max torque is done by strengthening permanent magnet flux, strengthening the coils mechanical binding to motor rotor/cage, as well as increasing the current capability of the inverters that supply AC current to the motor. Increasing power is done by reducing back-emf (electrical resistance inside the motor that grows with speed) and/or providing better cooling for the motor coils. The electron Rocket has 1MW electric motor that's just the size of a coke can because they use cryogenic rocket propellant to keep the motor cool.
This is incredible engineering, but the purpose of such a car is extremely limited due to the weight and energy capacity of the batteries.
@Akmol Ali The maximum torque is not really limited by the cooling like the maximum continuous power is limited by cooling. Maximum torque is limited by strength of the magnets, motor construction, and current capacity of the inverter/motor driving circuit. You can create an electric motor with incredible torque but not much power with little cooling. The electron rocket 1MW motor is done in a small footrpint by using very high RPM and high continuous torque. Power = torque/rpm
@Richard Kelbe Just emailed him. Fingers crossed he replies :)
@@Nathan0A Also silver wire winding would help little bit (31% less heat generated for same winding volume, capacity for power to go up) if you want to save weight, you might opt for copper coated Alu wire, saves ton of weight, but they have to model for heat dissipation and removal (adds heat due to the 1.66x higher resistance), coolant flow is impressive, i don't think there would be a problem in heat removal from flow perspective, question is of in/out temps (capability of that cooling circuit)...
@@ZegaracRobert also silver is a better conductor
I love that you were willing to scrap two proven designs to go for a third.
Really love those videos with Mate and team, but this one was absolutely amazing. If you are trying things around with the format, this one is awesome. Loved the 60sec competition on throwing specs out. Shows how Mate is knowledgeable, but also Boris made the special effort to complete the data. Sick!
Just amazingly engineered, beautiful engine, great gearbox and cooling system. Thanks for the videos!
Love these videos. The Roadster reaction leading to redesigns was really good! Competition is great.
We are launching gliders (sailplanes) with our V8 petrol winch and it's very cumbersome. With this axle we could potentially launch an Airbus. 😁
please share that winch video with me
@@irados ruclips.net/video/1IUgzXt4gjE/видео.html
You can see our winch beginning at 3:33
@Christoph Hopfner Nice video, haven't flown in glider for 18 years almost... last time i flew on Blanik L-13
In regards to the powertrain swap I'd actually love to see you as a powertrain supplier for future Formula E/1.
It would also be cool to see this used in an airplane or a speed boat.
I believe Mate's Formula E will come, not only to life, but to competition throne in the next 7 years.
going back to the drawing board a third time that’s true passion. Keep pushing further
Свака част. Капа доле, апсолутно фасцинантно. Гледао сам још први видео са бембаром пре много година и био одушевљен... Ово је генијално шта сте урадили. Само напред! Поздрав из БГ-а :)
Impressive how compact and power dense these two units are. We use a 3kW system in our machines which is almost the same size, 24v of course 🙈
Can't wait anymore for official reveal! Thanks guys!
Maybe not a so popular topic, but since your vehicles are electrical, I am very interested in how you deal with the electrical architecture and harnesses packaging? stuff like power and signal distribution, Electromagnetic Interference, Electromagnetic compatibility, etc...
Thanks and success in every project.
I'm sure it's all linbus or similar. Each module gets power and data, think of the window switch like a small computer with a network address that communicates along a central network interconnect.
Thank you for doing these Vids!!! Love this direction for cars!
great vid thanks for sharing , really interesting wish more companies would talk about there cars like this , keep up the amazing work
This was amazing
Mate have good teaching skills
Awesome engineering. Love to hear that. 3 times redesign nice
Can you please put this motors in Misha‘s Ring Tractor.
Great explanations
I need this kind of unit for my 1986 Audi Coupe GT on the front axle, but it can easily be more than 5 times less powerful and have just single gear. I want the car do be converted by the time my 7-years old boy turns 18. :)
But, absolutely love what you do there, Mate Rimac!
I'd put that 1MW baby into Misha's Golf 4. After all he needs that torque the most tho he also needs the range and I'm not sure where a battery pack would fit in that car. 800pcs of 21700 cells would take a lot of space + cooling and all the required rads. Maybe converting it to RWD and using the space under the hood for cells and cooling? It would require a donor car so that he can make the trips and I'm not sure if Golf 4 is the best choice after all. But it would be cool :P
Also 14:04 I am interested into hardware development but I don't have the required pappers (school) to do so :P
Only 3 years of Electonic-Mechanic @ESS (Varaždin) and related to car industry close to 2 years of working @Dürr factory in Bietigheim-Bissingen so the only use I could be of is fixing their robots since I pretty much know them inside out (especially the latest 3rd gen). But you're probably outsourcing that or doing it by hand since it's still only 250ish cars you're going to make.
Also why the reupload? I didn't notice any changes.
Thank you for the interesting episode, i would put in my boat, but would only need one with one motor setup :D
Mate you are one crazy guy. I think coffee and rakija with you would be amazing with all the stories like this ☺
I would put that 1MW of power into my 2009 Aston Martin V8 Vantage.... That would make the most beautiful car earth friendly
Kreisel will do that for you
you have excellent taste. For me, the V8 Vantage is the best looking A.M.
Chris Porritt, the manager for V8 Vantage is now CTO for Rimac so he'll either hate the idea of messing with his baby, or love it for stuffing in the Rimac technology!
Keep up the good work
That rear powertrain could be used in commercial big trucks, buses with decent power and space saving. However, since it has so much power, it could be used in boats, even racing boats.
Good clip 👍👍👍! As a current RUclipsr, I am contantly searching for fresh ideas! Good Job!
In comparison with a two speed gearbox, does a single speed gearbox reduce efficiency at higher speeds or did you managed a way around that issue?
Depends a bit if your question is hinging on vehicle range or heat losses? Perhaps a question to ask is this: you know the efficiency is only going to drop at pretty high speeds. Probably 250,300+ kph. Is it dramatic to have a small vehicle range reduction at blasting high speeds or it that something a customer could live with? Regarding heat losses, that might very well be an issue. As Nathan L. writes in the top comment of this section, cooling probably played a key role in pushing that available torque of the motor beyond what they had dared so far.
I was wondering the same.
Higher switching losses will occur at higher speed for high frequency switching IGBT.
ive just subscribed, i definitely found huge value
i would be so happy with that on rear axel of old 911. Masterpiece to be kept in display as everyday drive with ev swap!
Will Rimac ever compete for the top speed records and become a replacement of Koenigsegg as they have declared that Jesko will be the fastest car they ever make?
😉👍👏👏👽👽👽
Probably not for a while. A hybrid will eventually get the record when the batteries get smaller and better.
CvK works with Rimac
Fantastic video and amacing car.
Che bestia! Bravi!
Could you make an hr episode? With a company growing so fast, how do you hire, integrate people, make sure they become rimac in their heart, share your vision and drive them so they give the best of themselves?
Surely with an engine for the future, the obvious car would need to be ' back from the future'
So a real performance delorean
Hypercar.
😉👌
This uses MOTORS. An "engine" converts heat into work.
Haha, Burn rubber - Not Gas! Well, the design is really beautiful. Das Auto Begeistert won't be left unattended when it comes to loving the engine. The feeling that we get after opening the hood of an ICE. So majorly, it's a more RWD-centric, which makes it easier for drifting (over-steering characters).
The timed know-how was amazing, great game! Thanks for the constant updates on the videos giving insight into the Engineering and company and kind of everything.
There are studies, at least what I did for the integration of all the coolant, however the remark you made was exactly my remark during the seminar --- different coolant temperature and flows and here comes the integration problem for 1 cooling system to bring down the weight.
Hahaa, of course --- can't be slower at all!
Wow, that's phenomenal - 60 kilos reduction and still better, re-designing for a better job
>>> How about HM Contessa, not many know of it! But give it a check!
Can you please comment on SoC in the next videos, how it will be affected on the kick-down acceleration for stretched times and lengths.
Apparently, I didn't ask for your judgement. If you do not like it, there are thousand others to read! Go ahead, don't waste your time. It's precious! Thank you :)
Hi Mate, I would actually use the front drivetrain unit rather than the rear one. Would drop it into a Lotus Exige and pair it with a small battery custom built for high discharge rates to allow for high performance without being too heavy. I believe that there might be a sweet spot where lightweight will allow for reasonable range and performance without having to build a very heavy car. Oh and obviously would try to include fast charging, my EV experience teached me that small range can be offset by that.
Good video
nice one mate
I would love to see the rear motor in the rear of a smart EQ fortwo. It would do everything you need a smart to do:
• look ordinary
• do burnouts & wheelies
• be even faster than the Brabus Ultimate E Concept
I think that would also perfectly show off how compact the powertrain is. You can't punt that much power in a smart using a conventional engine. ;)
Awesome video Mate, thank you. I'm glad that you decided to do it better than the Tesla Roadster. Btw, I would put those motors in the R8 e-tron
I was wondering what your opinion abt the 2 speed was. Great vid!
How do you cooling the motor? With wather flow inside rotor shaft and around the stator or do you also have some other soulutions?
Would love to see your technology in a Mazda RX7. A drivers car of the 90s.
Nice
Just wanted to make a comment, and appreciate their work.
i have no doubt that this company will have a very good place in the future of electric cars and probably in the performance cars. i hope that EV would develop fast like how the cellphone to smartphones in just over a decade, and i hope that companies like this would make EV parts and Tech available for other markets like Tunners, Custom Builders and even DIY. over all i like this video and thank you Rimac for making contents like this. 👍👍👍
I would love to see that back powertrain in an m3 e46 😁
Good stuff
I know it might be a stupid question. But to save weight and improve efficiency you think you will ever go to in-wheel motors in a super lightweight other model? The unsprong weight is a problem but you see that happen in a futer Rimac model?
I have a question for you, would it be possible to make a bolt in part that could replace the differential in an atlas or English axle of an old mk1 or mk2 escort? Could this be a replacement for the old petrol motor? Could this replace the gearbox and the rest of the power train? How much horsepower could you make? This could transform the kit car industry!
Multi speed gearbox sounds interesting, they may call you crazy with that innovation but i called it jenius ...
Great story, I would put the 1m unit in a Skoda Yeti
Question: How did you manage to increase the Torque from the first spec to the second one with 900Nm? When you say in the same package that must mean there was not much room of making the active parts bigger. So I guess it also involved exotic materials like cobalt iron ? The bump in speed with a diffrent rotor banding since you said surface mounted PM‘s ? Or was it just an Inverter thing which now pumps more amps into the motor with a raise of voltage for additional speed and power?
Mate - an idea for cash flow, and leveraging the EV rampup, would be to sell motor/gearbox assemblies to us DIY guys via your online store, maybe even have OEMs pick up on them as well. Add a 11:1 or so option for gearbox ratio as well (which I think you should do for the C2, anyway, for street/dragstrip drivers), so we can wreck your projected 0-100 times :-)
Fantastic 🤩🤩
I like to know more about gearbox
Can please explain?
There's a nice cozy place for that 1MW dual rear motor system in the back of MY BMW... i3 that is! It would give me much more "push" to convert to a wider/lower stance, much wider tires... and it would probably still be around 2600 pounds!
how do you keep all the cooling pumps and condensers quiet?
those motors in a radical rxc spyder would be a super exciting ride...
They are not quiet, fans must be blaring in C2?
The water flow volume at 40 and 60 l/ min is insane....also what I want to know what kind of powermodules are used? SIC? How do you meassure current on the ac Phases? With hall sensor ?
Can you build in the same housing the motor and the generator. Whit the generator with magnets on the outer and inner rotor and the winding on the fixed stator between the two?
Would be cool to see my RV twist itself into a mobius strip with so much power :)
dont worry about questions as long as you have stories like that to share, just do that first
Maybe I missed it but I would like to know what type of motor they're using and I would like to see a teardown of the motor.
Hey guys... i would like to see an episode relates to the composites. How you guys manufacture monocoque and other composite parts.?
Porsche 944 I had back in the day would really be something whit that motor. Room for big battery in front and center console too. I'm good for building just ebikes tho.
Rímac vende acciones.. Excelente maquina
My pick for that power unit is the Ferrari 246 Dino. In my opinion one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Second choice would be any plain jane mini van. Just to be able too mess with a few heads.
Can you please show how the materials processed and machined to the final shape and properties.
With this kind of power, what are your plans to raise the efficiency of the electric motors?
Are you thinking of super conducting materials?
I mean the currents needed will cause enormous 'heating power' in engines, wires, controllers`etc. In what temperature-regions are you testing your prototypes: the arctic will cause other problems than Nevada desert.
Thanks for your very informative and entertaining videos !
I would like to use the C_Two drivetrain and build an Electric Hillclimb Race Car! To compete with it it would have to be "detuned" not to destroy all the Judd V8's but it would be nice to have the power and push it to see were it could go 😃
I would put that powertrain in older golf caddy because it has enough space for it and also its light enough to compensate the weight of the motors
It's insane how much power they are pumping through it.
Edit: Question: is there any difference between the final gear ratio on the front axle and the back axle?
Edit 2: If I could swap that rear drive unit into something, I'd put it into my wife's Toyota Sienna. In the rear. There's a goodly amount of space under the floor for a good-sized battery pack, and it'd make for one heck of a sleeper. :P
would it be possible to buy the inverter and motor separately in the future? rather than buying the whole car, can we place orders for the drivetrain only?
I'd put that rear axle in my 2001 Mercedes Benz S210 E-Class. In my oponion it is the best station wagon ever build with only a few volvos coming close.
and with the swap it would truly be an *_E_*-Class
I want to have a live stream with Mate Rimac. Like if you think that a live stream should be done with Mate Rimac where you can ash him questions.
I would like to put this motor in the go Honda E . It would be super fun
Do you make your own drive trains or figure what you need and outsource them from another company?
I will put all that of mechanic in total difrent chasis, smaller withouth routh, as cabrio. But that is only my dream in my 'intel inside', something with helmet ofcourse, I must wrotte design of 'Adrenalin Plus'... :) Best Wishes for all people who work in Rimac Automobili. 👍🏻🔝🙂
5:00 . . . I was expecting "Because we want it to drift better"
Mate! I would love to know how you manage the regenerative braking system within the vehicle! What are some of the limiting factors when it comes to maximising efficiency?
Guess it will be the max. charging-current limit of the battery at a given state of charge and temperature. Efficiency should be very similar to drive efficiency at a given speed and torque.
Put it in a Lancia Delta intergrale!
I would put the 1MW axle in my 2005 BMW 330ci ZHP so that it’s timeless design could live on into the future. Of course I will enjoy the car for many years to come.
Half of that motor into a motorcycle => hello Space , here i come ;-)
I would love to see such motors (larger size and power) developed for power boats / cruisers 😎
For boats, batteries, not drive units, are the big problem
This is cool and I love the Rimac videos.
But can someone explain why electric car companies like quoting power at the motor (Which is fine) but then like to quote the torque at the wheels?
Very interesting how they challenged the Tesla Roadster.
You should put the C2 power train into an e30 BMW. Using all of your knowledge from developing your new hypercar to create the ultimate classic-modern BMW.
Answer to the question from the end of the video - I guess this drive could fit in a VW T1 / T2 (rear-wheel drive only) and so the craziest drifting machine / dragster on the globe could be created. Best regards from Austria
I need that in my chevy.
Whereabouts on the axle do you find the rose?
Inverter cooling flows are high! Wonder what your switching losses look like?
A megawatt motor being driven by a 98% efficient inverter is a LOT of heat. Enough to heat your house in winter...
What would be price for rear axle inverters+motors if someone would like to buy say 100 of them? Just curious, ofcourse it would be silly on your behalf to sell them for your competition reverse engineer it.
You asked for ideas of what else you could put this motor unit in. Why not build a couple of killer SUV's; one using two axles and 4 motors, and then a monster 6x6 with 6 motors! That would be completely OTT!!
Interesting how Tesla went through similar developments with their original Roadster, trying a two speed gearbox but ending up with a single speed and boosting motor/inverter performance.
Tesla was buying gearboxes
Love this guy and the hard work he puts in to make the world's best and holy shit expensive cars out there! Also the tesla roadster with its carbon wrapped motor is going to destroy anything that you can come up with! Step your game up!
The Car looks so much better with the Round rear lights.
How are you able to pump 1000A of current through what I assume is 2/0 cable for the rear motors? Is that the continuous rating or peak? What does the power distribution look like coming from the battery?
Teflon or silicone insulation? Air cooling? i wonder also, probably peak, your likelihood of dying in vehicle goes exponential with time at those power levels! So i assume peak.
Zegarac Robert for the regular vehicle owner and emergency personnel the chance of electrocution should be relatively low. I’d assume all EV manufacturers incorporate some forms of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) in their pack where any high voltage that is detected on the chassis or low voltage ground either blows a pyrotechnic fuse or disconnect the main battery contactors. When I did FSAE Electric, we were required to put contactors both on the positive and negative terminals inside the battery box and use a ground fault board from Bender. Once the battery box was closed there is no way to get power out without everything on the safety circuit being happy.
@@ryanmccawley5467 Ryan, you missed all the game entirely! If you are pushing 1MW+ what is your speed? 200mph-300mph, what are the odds of dying at those speeds compare to the normal speeds. Dont just think oh i can do that forever in a strait line, do you know how fast tires are wearing at those speeds, what is chance of tire failure?, and what happens when tire fails at those speeds... I was not thinking on electrical issues AT ALL
Zegarac Robert, Zegarac Robert It was a little unclear what you meant so I made an educated guess. The Rimac concept 2 has a top speed of 258mph. ICE cars go fast too so risk of death at those speeds arnt limited to EVs. Also, that is why there are speed limits. The real difference is EVs make acceleration a lot more accessible. Speed won’t wear tires nearly as quickly as acceleration, deceleration and cornering. Although acceleration is faster in EVs, deceleration due to braking is still quicker which is equal between IEC and EVs. There may be increased wear on an EVs tires but that is why there is regular maintenance to check those things. One benefit of EVs is torque vectoring and traction control allows for greater control of the vehicle potentially decreasing deaths compared to an IEC vehicle
@@ryanmccawley5467 Well due to the "astronomical" losses at those speeds tire applies lots of torque constantly, (like accelerating all the time) and thus tire wear @max speed is massive, for bugatti veyron the number was ridiculous, don't remember the numbers right now but that was my point, that risks create bottlenecks elsewhere that pretty much determine how long you are going to use drive system @max power at any given time...and yes i did not limit my thinking to EV's, it works for any supercar...
I would build this 1 MW powertrain into a Porsche 964
, with a glassy bonnet to see the powerfull motors.
a very impressive and genius company!!
Would love to see that rear axle unit in a Renault Clio V6...
Re-upload?! 🤔
