    For those commentaries dismissing Josh Gibson's value due to unreliable record keeping during his Negro League career, consider this: Hall Of Fame players Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Cal Ripken Jr, Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, Frank Robinson, Edgar Martínez, Reggie Jackson, Tany Pérez, Eddie Murray, Rickey Henderson, Johnny Bench, Orlando Cepeda, Mike Schmidt, Roberto Alomar, Monte Irvin, Gary Carter, Robin Yount, Willard Brown, Iván Rodríguez and many others played in the Puerto Rico Winter Baseball League. Do you know who holds the highest batting average in the history of the league ?
    Josh Gibson, .480. Duly documented. How about that ?

    My father played against Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige when they were barnstorming in Butler Pennsylvania. He said Gibson walked up to him, handed him a ton of cash, and said "Hey kid, go buy me 18 hot dogs." I never even knew about this until I asked him one day who is the fastest pitcher he ever faced. He said Satchel Paige. He said he ever even saw the fastball and his big hitting goal that day was to just get out there alive.

    There are several reasons I think Judge Landis was actually bad for baseball but the number one reason is he personally refused to allow any black or even dark skinned Hispanics in major league baseball & deprived many talented players from competing on the biggest stage. Gibson was one of many overly qualified men that couldn't play just because of they're skin .

      You're another know-nothing, know-it-all. Landis had nothing to do with the ban on black players and there isn't a single shred of evidence that he did. Not one. It's just sloppy, lazy people like you who can't wait to label a dead white man a racist. The ban on black players was implemented many years before Landis became commissioner. He died in 1945. At the first owners meeting after Rickey signed Robinson the other 15 owners voted on the issue: 14-0 against with one abstention. And, the end of the 1950 season only 5 of the 16 teams had signed black players

    • @LazlosPlane
      @LazlosPlane 7 лет назад +2

      Using the same logic that some use against the great "white" players, sorry, Josh only played against HALF the population. He never had to face the best of the Major Leagues so how could he be the "greatest?"

    • @LazlosPlane
      @LazlosPlane 7 лет назад +3

      You start out making a logical statement then you lose it by letting your emotions rule you. Yes, the obvious restrictions against allowing black players into the major leagues was made by bigoted white men. Oh, wow! Alert the media. Yes, they were of course afraid to be shown up by black players who could really play. Anyone who is bigoted is frightened. They are pathetic. Scared. Cowards.
      Nothing new here.
      Then you make the leap to "Josh Gibson would hae destroyed the pitchers in the majors...." Oh, really? What is your evidence? You have none, as he never faced any. (a sad fact).
      "As far as I'm concerned," is a statement that means, proves, demonstrates NOTHING. If you have evidence produce it.
      None of this has anything to do with my original point. One criticism always hurled against white players of the time is that, "we don't really know how great they were, because they never played against the black teams." Well, if that makes sense (which I believe it doesn't) then the same logic would apply to the black players who never proved their mettle against the white teams.
      Personally, of course, there were many black players who would have excelled in ANY league. Do I have proof of that? Not really. I have only to go by what those (both black and white) were there and saw them play. It seems obvious that Satchel Paige would have dominated any league, for example. But don't just throw out a statement about Josh Gibson, as great as he was, (Oscar Charleston was better, IMO) "destroying" anything. It just sounds silly and you have no proof.

      @arthurseymorejr.3606 7 лет назад +8

      LazlosPlane The only language I am speaking is the truth , it's not hard to understand , it's just that you don't want to . I am not judging anyone and it is you that comes off as being superior in understanding which is why I first commented to you . You came down on a guy that said Gibson was the greatest with your well he only played half ( meaning the black half ) . I just made sure you realized white racism kept these men out of the majors . These great black players deserve the same respect as great white players who had a easy path to the majors . Nothing i said was off topic . Just don't shoot down our heros with condescending comments over situations that were out of their control for them to legitimize their greatness in the game of baseball .

    What bugs me is this: MLB has kept meticulous records of the history of this game since it's beginning. Yet, no long term or credible records were ever truly kept of the Negro Leagues, barnstorming leagues, etc. Now maybe some could say "well, they were racist & didn't care." To them I say this:
    How the fuck did they know so much about Negro players when they started 'allowing' them into MLB?
    Yes, I would like proof, not legends or stories, hard proof like recorded statistics. HOWEVER, to discount the credibility &/or talent of men like Gibson/Paige/Bell is pure crap. They obviously did some of the things they did because it made the "white" papers all the time.
    I think they do, or did, have the records of some of these players at one time. It's time MLB launched an ACTUAL investigation to finally put this to rest. Because there is NO reason to not believe Gibson hit 800 HR.

      @@davidgerald133 I hear what you're saying, they wouldn't have. But 'Negro' papers and sports writers were at the games, had box scores, etc, there's gotta be records somewhere that someone has. I'm just saying they now recognize these leagues stats as "professional" according to the HoF. What bugs me is they know that despite this, because I believe no true investigation has been done, the stats are not entirely accurate/full. Because of this, their precious MLB records are intact. Sorry I went on a rant there, I just figure, we have the WHA (hockey) stats in the NHL record books, the old ABA (basketball) stats are available in full. Bill Jenkinson has documented 16 exhibition games in which Ruth played against black pitchers. He also mentions 3 other games for which there isn't any contemporary primary sources. Below is a summary of how he performed in the documented games per Jenkinson:
    AB - 55
    1B - 11
    2B - 2
    3B - 0
    HR - 12
    BA - .455
    SA - 1.145
    This includes his 3 jacks in one game off "Cannonball" Dick Redding in 1927.
    Before I read his book I had independently collected many of the same games and a few others from ProQuest, and John Holway's book. The sample size isn't large but he his rate stats against black pitchers is much better than the best hitting stats of the best black players of the time in Negro League play.
    *Note that Jenkinson gives Ruth credit for two homers that were ruled ground rule doubles. In an exhibition game in 1926, Ruth crushed two balls that would have been homers in any major league park. The game was played at a field with a short right field fence so any ball hit over the fence, regardless of the distance, was ruled a ground rule double. Technically he hit .455 with 10 homers 4 doubles and a 1.073 slugging average.

Superior athletes pushed into obscurity before finally given their chance. Had it not been for Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson integration might have been pushed into the 1960s and longer. Gibson is probably the greatest player that ever lived. By consensus those that witnessed him say he was a greater hitter than Ted Williams, Hank Aaron or Willie May's! The conditions black players toiled under made their accomplishments even greater. Constant travel under harassment by law enforcement. If you could call it that! Unable to use restaurants, rest rooms or in some cases even to bathe. Black pitchers doctored the baseball with everything but engine oil. As the great Roy Campanella observed, " I never knew what the ball would do next." Learning to play under conditions no white player could imagine. This is what Josh Gibson and these fabulous athletes faced. Even after integration. That renders what these men did all the more remarkable. And why Josh Gibson is probably the greatest player that ever lived.

      @@davidwindsor798 There is a lot of WHITE history that can be proven. There is a lot of black history that has been eliminated or buried. Of course you have an argument when the white media back then glorified their heroes and downplayed probably the "Michael Jordan" of that time in baseball.

    I have a firm belief that Josh should've been the one who played for the Dodgers, and not Jackie Robinson. Mr. Gibson was better then the rest!!! RIP 🙏
