Of all the old school players in either league, Josh Gibson and Satchel Page could absolutely play well today. Satchel was like Justin Verlander on the mound. Gibson averaged 50+ HR per 162 games played. He had seasons where his HR average was 1 every 2 games.

What bugs me is this: MLB has kept meticulous records of the history of this game since it's beginning. Yet, no long term or credible records were ever truly kept of the Negro Leagues, barnstorming leagues, etc. Now maybe some could say "well, they were racist & didn't care." To them I say this: How the fuck did they know so much about Negro players when they started 'allowing' them into MLB? Yes, I would like proof, not legends or stories, hard proof like recorded statistics. HOWEVER, to discount the credibility &/or talent of men like Gibson/Paige/Bell is pure crap. They obviously did some of the things they did because it made the "white" papers all the time. I think they do, or did, have the records of some of these players at one time. It's time MLB launched an ACTUAL investigation to finally put this to rest. Because there is NO reason to not believe Gibson hit 800 HR.
@@davidgerald133 I hear what you're saying, they wouldn't have. But 'Negro' papers and sports writers were at the games, had box scores, etc, there's gotta be records somewhere that someone has. I'm just saying they now recognize these leagues stats as "professional" according to the HoF. What bugs me is they know that despite this, because I believe no true investigation has been done, the stats are not entirely accurate/full. Because of this, their precious MLB records are intact. Sorry I went on a rant there, I just figure, we have the WHA (hockey) stats in the NHL record books, the old ABA (basketball) stats are available in full. I say MLB needs to step up & Do the digging needed to give those players who never were apart of the Show the true status they deserve, statistically.

Sorry but Josh did not pitch and yes ruth played left handed catcher before he became a pro. There is a photo of ruth in catcher outfit at his school. He was able to play any position. That's a fact not hearsay.
Bill Jenkinson has documented 16 exhibition games in which Ruth played against black pitchers. He also mentions 3 other games for which there isn't any contemporary primary sources. Below is a summary of how he performed in the documented games per Jenkinson: AB - 55 1B - 11 2B - 2 3B - 0 HR - 12 BA - .455 SA - 1.145 This includes his 3 jacks in one game off "Cannonball" Dick Redding in 1927. Before I read his book I had independently collected many of the same games and a few others from ProQuest, and John Holway's book. The sample size isn't large but he his rate stats against black pitchers is much better than the best hitting stats of the best black players of the time in Negro League play. *Note that Jenkinson gives Ruth credit for two homers that were ruled ground rule doubles. In an exhibition game in 1926, Ruth crushed two balls that would have been homers in any major league park. The game was played at a field with a short right field fence so any ball hit over the fence, regardless of the distance, was ruled a ground rule double. Technically he hit .455 with 10 homers 4 doubles and a 1.073 slugging average.
T. Rex I stated facts sir. Deal with that. The first 15 years after integration the major leagues were dominated by former Negro Leagues players. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Ernie Banks, Roy Campanella, Larry Doby. Sorry sir but I know my baseball. My dad played minor league baseball
Just got his jersey. Best baseball player in Pittsburgh history, but Roberto Clemente is a close 2nd. Two men who gave everything they had to baseball.
They didn't have to join the MLB matter of fact MLB was so concerned about the rising and popularity of the Negro League they started to pay attention to the number of whites in attendance according to players such as Buck O'neil,Satchel Paige,Jackie Robinsson, all memberes of the Kansas City Royals they signed a veteran cuban by the name of Jose Mendez to mange the club they would travel1st class stayed in the best hotels and ate at the best restaurants black owned
It would have been just the opposite cuz all those better pictures would have been in major leagues Hilton Smith Satchel Paige Smokey Joe Williams Cannonball Redding you want me to go on
@@latouselatrec As I noted in a prior comment, Ruth never had any problem with Negro League pitching. In exhibition games his record was 55 ABs, 12 home runs and a B.Ave of .455. A shame to hear that so many of these incredible players are either forgotten or not remembered at all. That's just how racist whitey wanted it. Superior athletes pushed into obscurity before finally given their chance. Had it not been for Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson integration might have been pushed into the 1960s and longer. Gibson is probably the greatest player that ever lived. By consensus those that witnessed him say he was a greater hitter than Ted Williams, Hank Aaron or Willie May's! The conditions black players toiled under made their accomplishments even greater. Constant travel under harassment by law enforcement. If you could call it that! Unable to use restaurants, rest rooms or in some cases even to bathe. Black pitchers doctored the baseball with everything but engine oil. As the great Roy Campanella observed, " I never knew what the ball would do next." Learning to play under conditions no white player could imagine. This is what Josh Gibson and these fabulous athletes faced. Even after integration. That renders what these men did all the more remarkable. And why Josh Gibson is probably the greatest player that ever lived.
"Chester Battle 3 years ago He actually finished with 969 career homers. And a homerun is a homerun whether it was good pitcher or bad. I am sure Babe Ruth faced some terrible pitchers during his career. And when Ruth played some of the fields did not have fences so the ball was hit far and continued to roll while the outfielder chased it down." Babe Ruth must of actually finished with 1500 career homers.
I don't believe there are many players who would have thrived regardless of the area they were born in. Josh gibson I think is one. He would have dominated in literally any Era, going up against any picther

What bugs me is this: MLB has kept meticulous records of the history of this game since it's beginning. Yet, no long term or credible records were ever truly kept of the Negro Leagues, barnstorming leagues, etc. Now maybe some could say "well, they were racist & didn't care." To them I say this:
How the fuck did they know so much about Negro players when they started 'allowing' them into MLB?
Yes, I would like proof, not legends or stories, hard proof like recorded statistics. HOWEVER, to discount the credibility &/or talent of men like Gibson/Paige/Bell is pure crap. They obviously did some of the things they did because it made the "white" papers all the time.
I think they do, or did, have the records of some of these players at one time. It's time MLB launched an ACTUAL investigation to finally put this to rest. Because there is NO reason to not believe Gibson hit 800 HR.
They knew. Y word of mouth and seeing the men play. Keeping stats was not thought to be of great importance at the time unfortunately.
Why would MLB have kept records of another league?.. especially a league they dismissed and had no intention of incorporating them into their league

Below is a summary of how he performed in the documented games per Jenkinson:
AB - 55
1B - 11
2B - 2
3B - 0
HR - 12
BA - .455
SA - 1.145
This includes his 3 jacks in one game off "Cannonball" Dick Redding in 1927.
Ruth was an advocate for black players. He was not allowed to manage a team because of this.
"Hitler's Love Life Revealed." too funny -- 1:55

“800” lol
