Back in the day at Westland Mall we had the swan statue and the big bird cage. Water fountain of course. The good ole days in the mid 1960's through the 1970's to early 1980's.

So many memories as a kid here. Pay toilets in the basement, the huge fountain outside Hudsons, weird " A Clockwork Orange" mall like feeling in basement. Kresges.

This was our mall until I was 10 and Fairlane Town Center opened. Even then, we used to go to Hudson's there.
It's in much better shape than I feared. Maybe I'll visit the next time I'm in Michigan.

I used to hang out there with my friends from Junior high and High School days. Went shopping there with my parents and sister back in the days. They use to have a bird cage and fish tanks back in the day and waiting in long lines to purchase concert tickets inside Hudson Department store back in the day. I had a lot of friends who use work there. These memories date back to 1970' to 1980's and early 1990's. Since then the mall has gone into toilet and surrounding businesses in the area as well.

I used to come there once every summer. Sad that it's going out this way.
    I will miss this mall.
    RIP Westland.

Just like the shopping catalogs were replaced with malls, the internet has become the death bell for malls. Young people today don't like the idea of getting off their behinds and making an effort to go out and shop. They serf the net, and expect items to be delivered.
My generation, we loved seeing items in the store before making a purchase. Not some pictures on a website. The death of retail shopping stems from laziness.

Westland kid here. Re-furbish the place so it looks like it did in the 1970s, then re-open it as a museum! (Probably get more customers that way!)

Well, as usual you picked the perfect music to illustrate the visuals...it has a Mister Roger's Neighborhood kinda vibe which fit perfectly.
I really liked the look of the middle part of this mall with the high ceiling and light fixtures on either side. The place reminds me of a once-popular mall on Chicago's SW Side....Ford City.
Ford City is a place that I hope to see on your channel one day.
It has a historical link to the famous Tucker Motor Company (makers of the '48 Tucker Torpedo) and it's also next door to the Tootsie Roll factory.

Used to go to this mall all the time. Kinda sad to see it in the state it’s in now but it was already going downhill long ago.

The crazy thing is that this is a "good" mall in this region. My buddy works security there and apparently some of the stores (Victorias secret and Bath and Body Works) are either the #1 or #2 of that franchise in the entire metro detroit region.

This mall feels more like an airport terminal than a mall.

Everybody does online shopping. To lazy to get out and goto the mall, and enjoy the day with family.

It seems once they start losing anchor stores, the whole thing goes down hill. They only have JC Penney and Kohl's left.

I think he means that it doesn’t look that dead compared to a lot of other dead mall videos. You still see stores and the place looks well maintained. There aren’t many shoppers but this is also closing time, based on the amount of stores still occupying the space, it doesn’t look like a dead mall at all. It may not be as thriving as it once was, but it’s also not dead. Go look at some of the other dead mall videos and you’ll see like 3 stores open with tons of vacancies.

What the fuck happened? I haven't been to this mall in 12 years since I was like 3 or 4 years old playing on the playscapes and seeing Santa Claus. Holy shit this mall had aged like milk.
