  • In this episode, I will teach you how to tie the EPIC friction hitch, which is ideally tied using a 32" spliced friction cord.

Visually and mechanically it’s seems to look good engaging and disengaging, unlike some other hitch knots. But my go to knot is the catalyst hitch which I learned on this channel.

I'm glad you like it! This hitch definitely does engage readily and easily without much fussing around dressing and setting the knot. Ass you can see from the video, it grabbed after zero real dressing and setting.

@Knot-orious suggestion. A 10 second clip for each hitch video that shows a rope wrench with tending pulley... help some to see hitches in their context... at least as I mostly use srs/srt.. love your work!
I'm working carpentry, plumbing, and electrical for daughter way up north in nz.
Brought hitch cord, 2m of old climbing line just to keep up with hitch tying, evaluating!!!

Hey, this is GREAT advice as far as my content is concerned. I definitely agree that showing each hitch with a rope wrench would help to clarify what I'm showing. I already have quite a few videos already prepared, so it might be awhile before you see this put into place. But I promise you that I will do so. Thanks for helping me innovate and good on you for continuing to tie hitches while out in NZ. Whenever I travel, I bring a hitch cord and a rope! If I rest on my laurels, I'll run out of content! Gotta stay sharp!

Would that work nicely for SRT without any additional devices like rope wrench if total weight on hitch is under 80kg? What would be ideal rope diameter ratio? I have 11mm main rope and 8 mm eye to eye. So far every single hitch I tried was difficult to break after climbing couple meters. I tried VT, Distel, Prusik, Schwabisch, Klemheist. Is it the hitches, diameter ratios, or just lack of additional mechanical devices to reduce friction on hitch? I climb very occasionally on small heights - under 5m, so spending significant amount of money on rope wrench is not ideal.

I haven't done any actually testing to see how this hitch performs without a rope wrench, but my guess is that it wouldn't work very well without one...just like most any hitch. If you want a hitch that's going to work without a rope wrench, try the Sticht hitch. It was created by a close friend of mine, Brocky, and it works as is with no mechanical additions. ruclips.net/video/EVdm0gbaj2g/видео.html If you're using an 11mm rope and an 8mm hitch cord and finding it difficult to break and operate, then you should probably consider using a thicker hitch cord, which should make it easier to function. I would suggest the 9mm Sterling RIT or, better yet, the 9.3mm Teufelberger EpiCord! By increasing the hitch cord diameter, you will probably find that your hitches operate more smoothly. The lower the diameter, the more it will bite into the rope. But you will still have plenty of friction with a larger diameter cord because the hitch cord is wider and flattens out more around your rope.

@@Knot-orious Thank you! I was worried about not having enough friction on thicker cord, but mine indeed bites very heavily. Will get thicker hitch cord and try out the Sticht when I get some time for this. Hopefully will report back how it went.

I made a couple of rope wrenches. Work great.

@@dzarek1039 Definitely share your personal experiences, even if they are negative! I am always encouraging my viewers to share any and all experiences they have with any hitch they may use or try out! But I think you'll find that a thicker cord will break more easily!

@@Knot-orious Sooo... I was able to try it out today. And it is awesome! Soo smooth and precise, just two fingers to operate. Additionally quite compact and very easy to tie. Thank you so much! 🙂
      Here is my setup:
      11mm rope
10mm hitch cord (no 9mm in my area) 90cm long
34mm ring (DMM, just like yours on the Sticht hitch video)
It seems like it works so well due to the fact that the main line is pinched within the ring by the hitch cord. That reduces friction needed for hitch significantly. And obviously line to cord ratio is better now.

As a fat guy who climbs I have problems w my hitches jamming up on me and having to stop and redress them. I’m going to try this. It seems like it wouldn’t jam up as bad.

    • @Knot-orious

Are you using a rope wrench? Are you climbing on a moving (MRS) or stationary (SRS) rope system? This hitch is a lot like the VT (Valdotain Tresse) in its ability to mitigate jamming to SOME. EXTENT. Give it a try and let me know how it works out. Aways happy to help. Let me know how I can help. Thanks for your comment!

I climb MRS with a hitch climber pulley for tending. I decend on a figure 8. I recently purchased a zig zag but my biggest problem is trusting my gear. I feel like the prusik chord and hitch is more trustworthy than the zig zag. Although I am getting more used to it I still get nervous and tend to want to back it up with something. I’m still somewhat new to climbing and I’m 300lbs lol most guys my size stay on the ground but I love being up in the trees. I just make sure to tie into larger leads and I’m super cautious because I am self taught.

I’ve climbed on several different hitches including the VT. I’ll definitely be trying this hitch here soon.

The Petzl ZigZag has a WLL (Working Load Limit) of 140kg (308lbs), so with yourself, your harness, and everything else, you might just barely surpass the WLL. So please proceed with caution! As for a hitch based system on an MRS arrangement, it should be much more forgiving with weight. Have you tried maybe reducing the amount of wraps in the coil of the VT? Maybe doing 3 instead of 4 wraps to help you break the hitch during a descent? It's a really slippery slope because you want the to make sure the hitch grabs with your weight, but you also want it to "break." Definitely give my EPIC hitch a try and let me know how it pans out. I'm always here to help. I have a private email address at knotorious.contact@gmail.com if you would prefer some kind of consultation there. =-D

Also, what size cord are you using? Maybe you need to go up in diameter to a 10mm cord if you aren't already using one.
