    Super cute. I would recommend reinforcing the rubber bands with twine or string tied around it. The rubber bands will desintegrate over time and you can have a mess. Speaking from experience lol.

    Tip: use coffee or tea instead to stain raffia. It is a type of fabric and they stain better using those items.

    Fyi: you can coffee or tea stain it. That's how I faux antique my white papers. I'm sure it'll work on raffia. Your gnome turned out soo adorable! I love it!!! Tfs GOD Bless

    He is so cute. Gonna make a few of these. Don’t have the skirt raffia but I will figure it out. You poor thing I think you need some Sharper scissors.💜

      Thank you! I haven’t ever made a beard with regular raffia. It might work or it might be a bit too stringy. I’ll have to try it out sometime and see how it compares. And yes, I definitely need sharper scissors lol

    Oh my goodness, he's absolutely adorable!! Definitely the cutest gnome I have seen on youtube, and I've seen a lot, lol! I will definitely be making him! I was trying to think of what I could do different to make two and have one be female. Just not sure how I could make her look like a girl. This is the first video I have seen on your channel and I will definitely be watching more!

      Thanks so much! I think the ol’ pigtail trick would probably do it. And I think this raffia could be braided if you wanted her pigtails braided because it’s all the same length.

    I have actual straw that I'm gonna try and leave it blonde. Thanks for the idea. Also, you could brush your entire piece with concrete/mortar and make an actual garden gnome but you would have to paint it and seal it to go outside.

    You might try dying the raffia with coffee or tea instead of paint. It worked for macrame cord, but not sure about that plasticy hula skirt...

    He is so cute. Just a suggestion couldn't you glue the raffia into the tip of the hat when you are gluing the hat to begin with. Will be making one.

      You definitely could! If you bundled the raffia together then glued it up in the hat that would definitely be a lot faster than the way I did it 😊 that’s a good idea

    Hi Carolyn, I really, really love your scarecrow gnome. He's awesome! I watched with avid interest as you built him up from bits of this and that. I thought your idea to colour the raffia was a good one, but I think perhaps ink, or food colouring would have coloured it more deeply? However, it came out wonderfully and looked old and slightly dirty which is the scarecrow vibe, so all's well that ends well. I am new to your channel and have subbed to you. Ty for a lovely video.

    I like the idea but would be concerned about bugs/pests in the lentils and especially if you planned to store for the next season. For that reason, I think I would use sand.

    Did you wash the drop cloth? It doesn't look really stiff? I'm having trouble making the hat. Everything else looks great.

      Yes that dropcloth is kind of old, I’ve used it a couple of times for painting and I’ve washed it a time or two. Washing it should soften it up. And thank you 😊

      I haven’t had any issues with that but I suppose if it was kept in a very humid/wet room, it might. You could always use plastic beads instead that way you wouldn’t have to worry about it. Thank you so much for watching! 😊

    Using food such as beans, lentils , rice will draw bugs to anything like ghosts, snowman and gnomes. Don’t use cotton either, bugs will make nests and lay eggs. Use rocks or glass ovals that you get at the dollar stores.

    So very cute! Since when you put the hat on, it was out of camera site. Did you put the paper in or leave it out?
    Those are some old scissors, someone must be good at sharpening scissors. I think I have a pair like them in my grandma's old treasures.

      Thanks! I didn’t stuff the hat. I wanted it to be able to flop over. But there was some excess sock sticking up that I did leave in there. 😊

      It’s from a canvas drop cloth. They sell them at Walmart, Home Depot, and other places that sell painting supplies 😊

    Tea would have dyed the raffia . The stronger u make the tea darker it gets or use black peko tea

      I use rice and no problems. I freeze the rice for 48 hrs. before I use it. I've had no problems with bugs or mice and have had some of my gnomes for over 2 years.
