    I enjoyed it for the relaxation. I was all keyed up this morning and I stumbled upon this video. As I watched my BP went down, my heARTbeat slowed, my eyes relaxed, my breathing leveled and my mind emptied. TYVM for posting!

    Thank you for your work! It really helped me improve my portrait drawing skills. Now I can draw a face from different angles, I might not have been able to draw something like that before. Keep up the good work! ❤

    What exactly is the Loomis method? It would be helpful if you explain it while drawing.

    • @gunnarb.7094

      With the Loomis method specific grids are used in drawing a head, that it looks always exactly the same, even if you look at it differently from different angles. It was developed by an american illustrator called Andrew Loomis in the forties.

    This method seems good for understanding the construction of the head in space but don't miss straight lines where they appear. For example, her left cheek from cheekbone to jaw, left ear outer edge, right side of the neck and bottom of her chin ate all pretty straight. Of course everything covered in flesh makes subtle curves in actuality, and you seem to be good at that. And in shorter segments like around the mouth and eyebrows you saw things in terms of straight bits. Im.saying don't miss the big ones. Reference these angles to the edge of the page if necessary. Good and diligent work.

    For basic facial structure this method works well as we can see in this video, spacing between facial features is accurate and overall structure is good but details need work. Try breaking the face down into levels of detail and keep your pencil strokes light and define shapes by building value rather than sketched lines. This is a good demo of the technique though to get something reasonable to build from.

      Scale is alittle off.

    • @schrodingerscat1863
      @schrodingerscat1863 Год назад

      @@snanguidry3283 Yes it is, slightly too wide overall, but the finer details are way off. That is why I suggested breaking it down into multiple levels of detail. Get each level refined before moving to the next. This comes with practice, I have seen many people with the same problems eventually get it right with a bit of practice, myself included. Basic technique needs refinement, lighter pencil lines for construction, then bring out detail by shading rather than using lines to define edges like you might see in a comic book art.

    • @snanguidry3283
      @snanguidry3283 Год назад

      @Schrodingers Cat correct. I think overall, it was not a good example of how to scale and show techniques. It would be better if there was an audio explaining what they were trying to do. Sketching the way they did will not make you improve in realism, but like you mentioned, comic book style sure

    • @schrodingerscat1863
      @schrodingerscat1863 Год назад

      @@snanguidry3283 Indeed, the technique was sound but the execution quite poor. To be honest I didn't notice the lack of narrative maybe because my own internal monologue filled in for it. I think if one were new to this technique it would be easy to get completely lost with this presentation.

    The reading of the book is very instructive. But it is not an insurance to draw faces they are ressemblant to the model. It is the case here in this tutorial. As said in some comments nose and mouth can be ameliorated.

  • @KpxUrz5745
    @KpxUrz5745 Год назад

    I found this demonstration to be exasperating, misdirected, and actually ineffective and counterproductive instruction about drawing heads. First of all, while any implement can be used, I would not advise beginners to work with mechanical pencils because this tool lacks ability to vary line quality, and is fairly restrictive. I would even call it "unartistic" except in the hands of the very best trained artists (such as an Ingres!). Secondly, I find that the use of imaginary circles to be restrictive guidance that will not help much and will have to be erased later. And thirdly, in this demonstration there is far too much attention being devoted to total inconsequential details such as the earring, the flyaway hairs, the eyebrows, and on and on. There are much more effective ways to provide good guidance to beginning artists on how to get off to a very good start, and how to work towards a much more sensitive and artistic result. Sorry, all public commentary cannot be gushing with compliments.
