The History Of NASCAR's Cursed Car

- In the NASCAR community, there is a debate over what is the sport’s unluckiest car, and what really makes a car unlucky. I believe the unluckiest car in the sport’s history is the No. 28 for Robert Yates Racing. The 28 team could never secure a championship. Not only this, but because of the tragedies that occurred with their drivers Davey Allison, Kenny Irwin Jr, and Ernie Irvan, many in the industry actually believe this car was cursed.

The White/Black/Gold Havoline 28 is one of the all-time best paint schemes. I loved Davey. I was a 13 year old Alabama country boy when he passed. I will never forget that July morning when they announced it on Sportscenter.
The #28 car was always one of my favorite cars. From Davey Allison, Ernie Irvin, and Ricky Rudd it had great success. Unfortunately along with that success it had some dark moments.
People really don’t speak of Davey’s 92 season in its full context. Yes he had 5 wins but on the flip side of that it was a complete feast or famine season where he either finished very well or he totally crapped out and has a serious lack of consistency. Furthermore I truly believe that he suffered at least 1 or more concussions that season due to wrecks like the ones he had at Poccono and in the Winston.
It's NASCAR, in NASCAR you just can't be fully consistent... It shows that Davey always gave it all and went for all, it was all or nothing for him and never gave up! That's what great drivers like Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt or even Kyle Busch do. Davey loved racing and in that matter he was very consistent. If he wasn't he wouldn't need just a top 7 in the final race to win the championship.
JJ was very coniest the years he won the cup so is KB @@RobertoCarmona13
@@RobertoCarmona13 Imma say one driver who was fully consistent was Terry Labonte when he won his two titles
I was at the Pocono race when Davey Allison wreck
That made for a great documentary.. by Fox Sports, I think
RIP Davey Allison & Alan Kulwicki 🙏
I had a friend who's son loved kulwicki ,I gave him a Stock Car Racing magazine with a poster of. him .I stuck another poster of him on a rifle rack in my bedroom he won the championship a couple of weeks later,,,,,,,after he was killed I came home from work the next Monday and the poster had fallen down,,,,, things that make you go Hunmmm😮
As someone who was watching every race back then, let me tell yall that Havoline Thunderbird was one bad ass ride, particularly when McReynolds took over as Crew Chief because they essentially became a championship team overnight. Other than Dale's #3, the 28 car was pretty much the car that everyone looked for every week during that time, then when Rusty went to the Miller Genuine Draft deal with Penske, they were the 3 fast black cars every week one of them was in contention for victory if not all 3. I'm a diehard Chevy guy BUT I did root for Davey particularly during the 1992 season cause most figured since Dale was having such a sour year that it was Davey's title to lose. That was a sad day at Atlanta that November when they lost the title, all due respect to Alan & also that was King Petty's last ride BUT I think everyone was looking forward to seeing Davey finally hoist that first long awaited Winston Cup trophy. I thought it was truly ironic that Irvan would eventually take over the 28 car after the loss of Allison. Irvan REALLY showed just how strong that car was in 1994, you know he was the season's True Value Hard Charger Of The Year Award winner despite missing the final 11 races of the season. And NFJJ is wrong, Irvan took over the car with 9 races remaining in 93 & won 2 of them one at Charlotte & the other at Martinsville. He returned to the team to drive at the end of 1995 in a Havoline sponsored car numbered 88 which would be switched to Dale Jarrett in 96 & Irvan would return to the 28. Yes the 28 car itself never was able to win a title BUT luckily Robert Yates Racing finally did get one with Dale Jarrett in 99, an unlikely one at that cause when he was initially announced to drive for Yates, I also thought it was a bad move but Jarrett ended up being the teams most successful driver. With how goofy these cars look now, I would not want to see the number on any of them....
I personally think Davey's car looked better in white with the metallic/mirror numbers than the iconic black paint scheme but i might ht be the only one. 1:55 cheers, another great one.
oh i loved that car look. the metallic mirror was hot.
The reason Davey changed the paint is because NASCAR made him. The reason was the scorers where have a hard time picking up the car in the corners and back straight away. So in defiance Davey had the car painted black with day glow orange numbers. He was going back to the white and black with day glow numbers but Texaco loved the black color scheme.
you are the only one
@jhaeck1 No, he's not.
@@charlesjohnson-xj5is interesting, cheers
The #28 Texaco Havoline Thunderbird was probably the most iconic cars in NASCAR history other than the #3 Goodwrench Chevrolet Monte Carlo or the #43 STP Plymouth/Pontiac. I was a huge Ernie Irvan fan and the days of Irvan, Earnhardt, Jarrett, Martin Wallace and all those boys were in my opinion the golden age of NASCAR. I miss those days. It’s sad to see what it has become today 😔
Yeah but back then you might only have 8 cars on lead lap. It's much more competitive. I don't like that they have gone to a spec car though. They need to let the crew chiefs work with the car more.
The Dale Jr download episode/s with Larry mac talking about his time with the 28 car is heavy. Larry dealt with so much as a crew chief in driver health/injury/etc issues.
The 28 car was always one of my favorite cars even though it was cursed I thought it was great that Joey Gase ran a replica of it. BTW love your vids nfjj
Yeah it's a great number.
There's quite a few cars in NASCAR history that could be considered cursed. The 28 in Cup is certainly one of them.
I'd also consider the 37 Timberwolf & 38 Great Clips cars in the Busch series as cursed.
And of course there is also the infamous Whelen curse where any Cup driver who drove that 31 car in the Busch Series ended up injured... except Dave Blaney.
idk the story about the 37 timberwolf car, can you tell me why it's cursed?
Don't forget the Roush-Fenway 60 Xfinity Series entry in 2018. 28 spins or crashes in 33 races, and while the car manages 5 top-10s, it also had 11 DNFs.
@@SebrystianVettel In order:
Mark Green - Original driver, was there for 4 years (Only 2 full-time), never won, only 1 Top 5, far & away the unluckiest of the 3 Green brothers with the other 2 being Busch Series Champions, & then had only 1 other top 5 the rest of his career.
Kevin Grubb - Replaced Mark Green, was there between 1999 & 2001, never won but did come close with 6 top 5, but his career (& later his life) spiraled after leaving... It's a very sad story... 💔
Jeff Purvis - Replaced Kevin Grubb, was there for the first 12 races of 2002, got a rain-shortened win at Texas which was his only top 5 & top 10 for that team, but a savage crash at Nazareth essentially ended his NASCAR career.
Kevin Lepage - Took all but 3 of the rest of the 2002 races after Jeff Purvis got hurt, got 2 top 5, but was irrelevant the rest of his career... not to mention he invented "Lepaging".
Elton Sawyer - In what would be the last starts of his entire racing career, he ran the last 3 races of 2002, only mustering a best finish of 20th... Now he's working with NASCAR for some reason...
David Green - Took over in 2003, 3 wins, 11 top 5's, 21 top 10's, but only finished 2nd in points, 2004 was a down year with 0 wins, 6 top 5's, & 16 top 10's.
David Green then moved to the main Brewco Motorsports car, the 27, as Timberwolf left after 2004 & the 37 was shut down.
All those years, all those drivers, so many being fond of the paint scheme. Yet it has only had 4 wins in total; It's first in a rain-shortened race, & the other 3 in a miracle championship effort that went for not... And basically all those drivers had sad or horrendous luck after driving that 37 car.
@@Ultimate23Dragon i heard about the Kevin Grubb story but i never knew about the story of all of these drivers and the 37 car, thankyou for sharing😄
You forgot to mention Jeff Gordon driving the 28 right after the tragic death of Davey, Gordon kinda resembled Davey with that Mustache he had going on early on, Jeff was driving in the Busch Series still at the time, but soon after came over to NASCAR.
Didn't Ernie Irvan have a second life-threatening crash at Michigan with MB2 that finally convinced him to call it quits?
I was the biggest Davey Allison fan and have to agree with you. That team went through a lot of ups and downs. Nobody deserved that 92 championship more than Davey and the RYR crew. I was so mad at swerving Irvan for the blown tire that ended the 28's championship. Sure wasn't happy when they put him in the 28. Took me 8 years to even try to watch a race after Daveys helicopter crash
i was rooting for kulwicki in 92, the underbird vs the big money, but i liked Davey id be alright with him winning in 92.
How is it Ernies fault he had a flat?
Then Ernie did a great thing in that car ar Martinsville wearing a Davey Allison shirt in tribute
ernie came down the track when he shouldnt have @@charliesmith7942
Ernie did a damn good job in the 28 car prior to his wreck! I have no doubt he would’ve won the championship that year! And actually came back and did a respectable job, although there were questions about how well his eye sight was. HATED it when he was pushed out of RYR!
The Texaco Havoline 28 was the best looking cars on the track along with Dale’s 3 and Rusty’s MGD midnight car!
Davey Allison and Ernie Irvan were friends...and the blown tire was hardly Irvan's fault.
I find it hilarious that yates denied dale Jr the 28 because Texaco didn’t want it brought back out but they let Travis drive the 28 lmao
i think texaco doesn't want the 28 to be in use by another teams other than yates
@@SebrystianVettel which is stupid considering they aren’t even in nascar anymore..
@@Ryanp69 when Dale Jr wanted to use the 28, RYR still exist and Travis drove the 28 for RYR
@@SebrystianVettel Travis drove it on 2008 dale Jr moved to hendrick and was in talked with the numbers before mid season 2007. Yates was willing to give up the number but Texaco asked Yates not to
Wow. Yates should have told them they needed to come back as an associate sponsor if they wanted to dictate what numbers were being used 🤷♂️
Is 42 a new candidate for cursed number now?
- Lee Petty: Near-fatal career-ending accident
- Kyle Petty: Unfair treatment by officials at 1996 Coke 600
- Irwin Jr: Fatal accident
- Montoya: Remembered for the jet fuel crash
- Larson: N-bomb
- Kenseth (as Larson sub): Lost the 2020 Brickyard 400
- Gragson: Caught liking offensive meme
At least Joe Nemechek, McMurray, Chastain and Ty Dillon hadn't any issues (performance aside) in that number.
Terry Schoonover: Fatal crash
Ross Chastain who is having a stellar career after 1 full-time season in the #42 car in 2021: am I a joke to you?
Man the 28 team had beep luck. Always seem to run really well week in and week out. The Davy, Ernie, Ricky Rudd getting popped. It just sucked for Yates. I remember Yates power dominating the cup series then poof, gone. At least we have the memories.
Davey Allison would've won 3-4 titles if not for his death.
maybe 5 or 6
Going all the way back to Fred larenzen the 28 has a record of drivers having a brilliant career that ends way to early
One clarification regarding Ernie Irvan's departure from Robert Yates Racing: he didn't leave so much as he was let go. The short version is that Irvan wasn't the same personality-wise after the near-fatal crash and continually alienated Texaco, doing things like not thanking them in his 1996 banquet speech, and showing up nearly two hours late to an anniversary dinner in 1997. Midway through the '97 season, Texaco had enough and essentially told Robert Yates, "it's him or it's us." Irvan's contract was up at the end of the year, so Yates decided not to renew it and brought in Kenny Irwin.
I liked Ernie but looking back once Davey died he screwed Morgan Mcclure over when he wanted his release. Yates actually offered the 28 car to Rudd FIRST but he wanted to start his own team. Which i have always wondered how Rickys career would have went if he went to the 28 team several years before he wound up there anyways. When Yates was in its prime.
Texaco was stupid for that. After Ernie left that team was trash
Never was an Irvan fan, but, you never kick a man when he's down.
For that reason, Ernies ok to me.
@@americanbadass88 Rudd was not the driver Irvan was nor the driver Dale Jarrett became, I doubt he would have won a title had he drove the car in 94 instead of doing his own team...
Ernie Irvan didn't just "come down in front of Allison" at Atlanta in 1992. He cut a right rear tire. Not much he could've done considering how long the corners were and how fast they ran. It was extremely unfortunate for Davey and probably cost him the championship.
Swervin Irvin
Davey was running 6th at the time & needed to finish 7th or better so it did not probably cost him the title, it DID cost him the title...
You missed Ward Burton crashing in to Rudd’s pit crew injuring two crewmen.
Or when Ricky Rudd killed Mike Rich of the #9 team on pit road at Atlanta because he drove past his pits but tried anyway, which, caused pit road speed limits?
@@bryonkidder6199 This had nothing to do with the point of the video, the accident with Rudd at Atlanta where Mike was killed was a decade before he took over the 28 car...
@@vinewood8295 in your opinion...lol
In my opinion, Rudd would come to the #28 and destroy it, just like he did with every other team he drove for.

@@TheRealSwissball shoot I forgot my bad
Just realized that after Texaco left the 28 team they moved sponsor to the 42 car next. I wonder if that was because of Irwin on why Texaco moved to Ganassi (the Jamie Mac & Juan Montoya era of the 42)
Texaco had a strong relationship with Ganassi in CART at the time, so when they decided not to renew with Yates, the move to Ganassi, with a rookie driver that already had a Cup win under his belt, was to an already favorable relationship.
Davey Allison - My All Time Favorite, now my driver is Ryan Blaney.
I've been waiting for someone to point this out
How about the 32 Dollar General car? I remember that many drivers attempted to win in that car but it just couldn't, as not even Kyle Busch could win in it, if I recall correctly. He, Denny Hamlin, Brian Vickers and even Mark Martin attempted to win in that car but couldn't. Out of all the wins the car could've had the only one that comes to mind is Mark's win in Las Vegas after the leaders took each other out of contention.
Excellent Video... Please make more of these videos,Thank You
0:30 I saw that exact car in person. It's on display in Eastern Pennsylvania at the Latimore Valley Fairgrounds, at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs. Cars not as badly damaged as you might think it is. I have pictures of it.
I miss the 90s. Drivers weren't kids. They were men, and they acted like it. With that said, I'm so glad the cars are safer.
Another great video, well done! Lots of knowledge learnt there.
Have you done one about Australian, Dick Johnson, when he came out to give NASCAR a try in the early 90's?

2002 at Sonoma was Rudd’s last victory too. Was lucky enough to see it in person when I was 9.
Also the idea to expand by robert Yates was a brilliant move getting dale Jarret to drive and be a real winner for them
My first race was '93 New Hampshire. And who's trailer did I stop at afterwards? "That Yates Rocket shirt looks cool."
A Collapsed lung is no joke. I had one from a motorcycle accident and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have survived with no major long lasting damage.

Add to your list Dale Jarrett broke his ribs at dover driving the 28
Ironic the 28 car that rudd flipped in the busch clash ended up repaired and we used it in arca, the car finally met its demise at talladega when brad smith broke both his feet in it

“DAVEY WAS A ROLLER COASTER”
“ELLIOT WAS HAVING ONE HELL OF A YEAR”
“KYLE WAS THERE”
“GANT WAS THERE”
“ERNIE WAS THERE”
And “KULWICKI WAS JUST CONSISTENT” like ALWAY’S…..
Nothing will “EVER TOP IT” ever….
I think we should add the #6 as the second cursed car.
That was Dr. JERRY punch that did that for Irvan.
💥💥 Me personally I don't think the number 28 car is any more cursed than the number 3 Chevrolet dale Earnhardt drove. I mean look how many bad accidents Dale Earnhardt had in that number 3. The barrel roll I think at practice in 1988 or 1989.
Talladega 1996, Talladega 1998 and we know what happened in 2001.
When DAVEY died in 1993; “THE NUMBER 28 SHOULD OF BEEN RETIRED” “PERIOD”!!!!
The curse of Restore as a sponsor could be considered a parallel curse.
And 28 is a perfect number in math…
Cale Yarborough seemed to have good luck in the #28 Hardees car.
in 1992 i saw & heard Robert Yates, cry on a phone when i said i have a unknown blood illness before i die & pass on I went on track to find my real father ( it took a duel path the man from my seal adoption to see my real father) he gave me a book a manual on old boat motors & ww2 time diesels engines! ok this man was most related man to me in my adopted family my step fathers brother he was real sick when i was a kid & got better it was a 100% death rate cancer he lived threw it in 2016 or 17 it became real fact i was about to loose my leg doctor had yelled at me & the next day i said my uncles name the nurse dropped everything & ran for the doctor, why the man had lived threw blood cancer & control for it based on his frozen blood (dna was proof i was sick & how why & what caused it was known then my government Job did it to me ok he was my mothers uncle) some things best unlearned! more questions then answers! the control for this cancer i have was known and understood both what & that happen same day the reason came on march 23 2019 when government offered me a deal!
When I play NASCAR games, I always create and drive a 28 car.
Well now Kyle seig is running a throwback to this car not saying anything but😶
1:58 best the car ever looked imo
Wonder why Larry left Brett's team after 4 races. Idk he was with Brett till this video. Kenny Jr was one of 4 drivers i think that died of a fracture to the skull. Blaise Alexander (local driver), Adam Petty, and Sr. Blaise's death was the last death before the haans device was enforced for all drivers. and the safety barrier at the tracks.
Robert & Larry started talking about him becoming the car chief of the 28 towards the end of the 1990 season. This was after he, Larry, had a few conversations with Davey about it. Larry had initially accepted a deal to start the 91 season as the car chief but he changed his mind not long after because of loyalty to Kenny & King Racing but after a few sour runs with the 26 car to start the 91 campaign & at the same time, Robert Yates had fired Davey's crew chief, the 2 got together again & this time were able to work out a deal & the rest as they say is history...
The 28 isnt cursed… in fact it’s a historic number that should still be in the series.
Yeats,, as my dad would say, was snake bit.
Davey wasn’t hurt in the car. Ernie wasn’t buckled in. Mike Helton killed Kenny.
They should bring back #28 in 2024 or 2025
If davey and tim richmon didn't pass Dale Earnhardt wouldn't have been a 7 time champ. Davey and tin both would have been multi time champs
First time I have ever disagreed with your editorial.
