Yeah man I actually spoke in the beaver video about Behringer and oh boy I got some backlash, as an engineer who has worked with many small boutique manufacturers I explained why certain copies are bad for innovation and how at least they should add more MIDI control over parameters, VST editors and so on… but instead got an avalanche of “you are rolling in dough”, “only reach people used to be able to make music”, “they are innovative and reverse engineer everything from scratch”…

To be fair to the guy, he is actively responsing to the comments here in a civil and pleasant manner. I'm not particularly a fan of Behringer, but I do like the DeepMind - yes, it is inspired by the Juno 106, but it does add a lot more. Their other synths (excluding maybe Neutron as it's their own thing) are blatantly trying to leverage the originals' cache. Homage, clone, or inspired; however you want to view it, just don't act like a mssive douche when you're called out on it like Behringer. It's just pathetic, and if Behringer ever want to be taken seriously by synth snobs - and by their behaviour they clearly, painfully, and blatantly do want to be - they should behave like adults.

MAGA synth dude makes one correct point: they aren’t actually “clones.” The chips from the original synths are no longer made. Even when they clone the chips, they still don’t sound exactly the same. Like the cool audio BBDs don’t actually sound the same as a Panasonic.
It's funny that people keep saying that Behringer make all the chips, no, they own the company that supplies chips, Behringer themselves don't do anything than acquire other companies with good reputations.
MIDAS, TC Clarke, all these companies were something before Behringer really made a name for themselves, which would mean that Behringer needs to buy rather than try for their own successes.

I know very well for a fact that Behringer didn’t just plan to be Robin Hood for synth enthusiasts, his moto was to bring down the competition.
The DeepMind was a good idea, pack with modern features and based on an old classic but with enough new stuff and design.

These guys dont acklowledge that the "VST clone" argument fails the "r&d department" criticism.
To create a vst clone, you must hire a team of researchers and coders to create audio generators and filters and stuff that emulate the original.
To clone the piece of hardware, you grab the schematic, and stick your name on it.
Its different. The VST requires a lot of work and even if it visually or audibly resembles the original, it is a totally different product on a fundamental level because it is NOT a piece of hardware.
This is a really great point! Doing all the math to emulate hardware is no joke. Not many can do it.

I'd never heard of Peter Kirn before, but if the worst thing he can come up with to try to discredit it him is the fact that he doesn't like transphobes, then that's not exactly convincing me his opinion on synths isn't valid.
The only criticism I have is the same one I had on the MPC discussions. You don’t even have a horse in the race. You don’t do hardware.
It’s like criticizing the rules of baseball and you don’t even watch or play. It’s interesting but does it even matter. Sure, you can rep whatever you want but keep in mind that you’ll draw fire particularly because you’re a disinterested party.

I very much doubt that anyone actually has a problem with the fact that Behringer sells reissues of vintage gear with some upgrades to make them fairly simple to integrate into a modern hybrid studio setup, or even more affordable versions of current gear that is far beyond any reasonable cost for most people to the degree where there was never a chance that they would have ever purchased the original one so the argument that the original manufacturer lost out on a sale just isn't a valid argument whatsoever, anyone who thinks that or vintage gear that is no longer under an active patent isnt fair game is as big of a D bag as Uli imo.
It's when they copy products that are currently in production that maybe are only 100 or 200 more dollars or even the exact same price for one
The fact that Uli tried to copyright Tom Oberheim's name is another, and also tried to scare DSI and members of the gearspace forum into silence through what is called a slapp lawsuit here in the US, which actually there are very clearly defined laws concerning these types of frivolous lawsuits that only serve to scare the other party into silence are not tolerated, nor should they be.
