It's funny, but I think it's a real thing that happens to people who have lived most of life involved with games. Resident Evil 4 was the last game I ever got frustrated at, like, I figured things out by getting good at that game. I go back to it just this year and literally feel that frustration again. Tim's cinematic intro here was a great visual representation of the "going back to a game" experience. All those coded memories coming back to make the modern day feel sort of like old times. I think there's a reason "Vaporwave" and such is so deeply tied into gaming; modern music that "feels" like the 80s, because that's the way a lot of people experience life.

Buddy, the year was 1988, and I was having the same conversation with my parents about the NES being the "Real Video Games," but I wasn't trying to replace Atari. I was trying to replace Intellivision. Intellivision's biggest feature was that it was capable of playing Atari games.
I tried, like an idiot, to convince my neighbors that Intellivision was just as good as an NES. They left to go play Mario 2 at their house, while I sat alone in my parents basement. We'd move away to another state, shortly after I'd graduated 2nd grade in 1989. In November of that year, I was finally given an NES. Later that day, I called Bowser the N-word, because earlier that day, I'd heard one kid at school call another kid that word, and thought it was a good insult. I had no idea what it word meant. My mom threatened to kill me if I ever used it again. I have not.

Wow. I was on my exercise bike for an hour, and this is still going. You won the race.
We appear to have grown up in similar situations. Dad was also a captain in the Army tasked to install the first IMB computer (mainframe) in the Pentagon. I remember playing Lunar Lander at WPI when I was around five. I was fascinated. I had a light pen and I was controlling the Lander!! I kept trying to Land close to the McDonald's someone programmed on the moon. This was the greatest moment of my first years on Earth. The grad students were more fascinated in my approach to the computers. It's probably not every day a child was in the lab. That day fueled something inside of me.
I would grow up all around the tech. Screwdrivers were removed from my reach. I wanted to know how this stuff worked. Was there a really a tiny Pterodactyl that's forming the television picture I see? Or is that just the Flintstones?
Fast forward a couple decades, and home computers were the rage. While other people were scared of using them, it was natural to me. I had already logged millions of hours on Rogue and (text) Adventure (my first time playing Atari 2600 Adventure is a whole nother story).
Today, I'm surrounded by the toys I never got as a kid. From Atari to Vectrex. However, I still keep up with the new. Rocket League is my favorite current game.
Thanks for this huge effort. It has pulled some great memories. I even learned some great stuff.
    Take care.

You could perfectly recall one conversation because it made such an impression on you and you revisited it many times. But you can also not recall other things accurately, or a memory can be accurate initially and slowly become inaccurate as time goes on and you make small mistakes or additions in recall.
There is just no known mechanism or syndrome or record of anyone having memory the way he describes. It's made up. It's probably just exaggeration to make you laugh, which is clearly in his wheelhouse.
